Is licking the yogurt lid really awful?

I was raised in a real waste not want not household. I was taught that when eating a yogurt, you lick the lid to avoid wasting any. In the days when lids were foil you had to be careful not to cut your tounge, I was taught that too! I've always thought this was normal and what everyone does.

Just today, for some reason I've wondered if it might not be the done thing in the staffroom?!

I worked with a woman who did this every lunchtime. Made me heave, not what adults do at all.

JudgeRindersMinder · 10/05/2020 12:34

If it’s really awful I can live with that! We’ve always licked the lids for the same reason as you, although there never seems to be as much on the lid as in the old days....wagon wheels and creme eggs are smaller too....😂

Herpesfreesince03 · 10/05/2020 12:34

Nothing wrong with it at all, wouldn’t do it in front of people though as some people consider it bad manners. I don’t really see why it is though

Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple · 10/05/2020 12:35

It is in this house because yoghurt lids belong to the dogs so anyone stealing their yoghurt will be given the side eye 😎
Dont even think of scraping the last bits out of the pot because again, that’s earmarked by the ones with the longest tongues.

QuestionableMouse · 10/05/2020 12:35

I wouldn't do it in public. Scrape it over the pot or use your spoon.

chunkyrun · 10/05/2020 12:35

I did not know that this was a thing! I always lick the lid! Why throw perfectly good tasty yogurt! I drink cereal milk as well 🤷🏾‍♀️

dudsville · 10/05/2020 12:35

I think it's fine in private, but have you ever seen someone lick a lid? It's so gross and it can be hard to look away in time!

MawnyStannit · 10/05/2020 12:35

Yes it’s awful, sorry.

dudsville · 10/05/2020 12:35

Ps, you can scrape yor spoon over the lid just as effectively.

Lllot5 · 10/05/2020 12:36

I used to let my cat lick mine. Now I don’t have a cat I lick it myself. Or if I’m being posh I scrape it with the spoon first.

moomoogalicious · 10/05/2020 12:36

Its totally normal. Me and my colleagues do it, no one bats an eyelid

Lots of uptight people out there OP.

lazylinguist · 10/05/2020 12:36

Made me heave, not what adults do at all.

'Heaving' at minor lapses in manners isn't what adults do either.

jellybeans44 · 10/05/2020 12:37

I don't know why but the thought of it makes me heave. Not from a manners point of view, but it's just all thick and gunky....Envy

BertieBotts · 10/05/2020 12:38

Perfectly normal thing to do Confused

How is it different to licking your spoon?

Tiredmum100 · 10/05/2020 12:39

Mmm, I might do it at home if the yoghurt looks smooth, (I can't stand lumpy yoghurt or anything in it, fruit etc. I wouldn't lick it in work.

BeeFarseer · 10/05/2020 12:41

I wouldn't do it in public but I also can't bring myself to bite a banana in public as it's so overtly sexual.

...

I'm joking. Grin I always lick the lid at home but tend to use a spoon to scrape it in public.

Witchend · 10/05/2020 12:41

Don't lick someone else's. That's my tip.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 10/05/2020 12:42

But it’s the best part of the yogurt! It’s lovely and creamy. I got feed up wearing it as I’m incredibly clumsy, so I scar so in into the pot, as I’m also from a generation of ‘waste not want not’.

Lostvoiced · 10/05/2020 12:44

Perfectly normal, but use a spoon in public.

My partner thinks its gross as well. Its interesting, I also was bought up not to waste food because we were very poor, and my partner had a much more middle class upbringing than me.

I used to give it to the dog or cat, but my current cat is far too snooty.

Apolloanddaphne · 10/05/2020 12:46

Yes it is terrible -- the lid and the pot are for the dog to lick!

NeutralJanet · 10/05/2020 12:47

The cat gets it in my house too. She can hear a yoghurt or a pack of ham being opened from anywhere in the house.

QuixoticQuokka · 10/05/2020 12:47

Ps, you can scrape yor spoon over the lid just as effectively. A friend does this, the lid still has wasted yogurt on it. It is mildly irritating, as it people who don't scrape the pot properly and leave loads of yogurt.

Licking the lid is no different to licking the spoon. Licking the sides of the pot then using my finger to get the bit at the bottom I would only do in private though.

Mollymalone123 · 10/05/2020 12:49

Hmmm- I’ll ask the dogs

Is licking the yogurt lid really awful?
iswhois · 10/05/2020 12:53

I don't get the issue it's part of the yoghurt experience

A colleague of mine licks out the tub afterwards though. Maybe that's a step too far

MitziK · 10/05/2020 12:56

In the absence of a cat or dog, you use the spoon.

As a grimy little guttersnipe dragged up in squalor and poverty amongst the animals, I wouldn't lick the lid because it was for said animals. Same way I wouldn't ever lick a plate or mop up whatever's left on it with bread.

Didn't lick the spoon, either. It's yoghurt, it comes off from putting the spoon in your mouth as normal.
