Is licking the yogurt lid really awful?

I was raised in a real waste not want not household. I was taught that when eating a yogurt, you lick the lid to avoid wasting any. In the days when lids were foil you had to be careful not to cut your tounge, I was taught that too! I've always thought this was normal and what everyone does.

Just today, for some reason I've wondered if it might not be the done thing in the staffroom?!

AfterSchoolWorry OMG. 🤮🤮

UserDeleted · 10/05/2020 14:13

It's totally normal to do it but also just as normal to be grossed out when someone else does it. Grin

SistemaAddict · 10/05/2020 14:16

Do you not know that the yogurt stuck to the lid is not for eating? It is certainly not for licking. How vulgar.

My head is totally illogical on this with regards to actually eating it Grin but I can't stand people licking food items. Makes me all squirmy. Yes, I do have food issues.

Do t get me started on people who lick Pringles. It should be a crime.

Licking lids is a private affair.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 10/05/2020 15:04

Licking lids is a private affair.

This is what happens when you normalise furries, adult men in nappies, etc. People demand the right to share their link online, HotelduLac. Hmm

I always used to. Now it makes me gag!
My husband and kids do it though, there's normally a lovely thick bit on there!

I take it no one eats ice creams or lollies in the summer either... because let's face it, that would make your views rather silly

georgialondon · 10/05/2020 15:42

Ok at home. Not at work

RainMustFall · 10/05/2020 18:39

It would be awful for me but that's because I hate yogurt. I don't see any problem with you doing it.

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2020 18:42

I don't see the comparison. Unless you are licking the packaging they come in.

Giggorata · 10/05/2020 18:51

Yes, use a spoon for heaven's sake..
There was a really ill advised advertising campaign a few years ago. The slogan was “lick the lid of life”. Yuck.

lazylinguist · 11/05/2020 09:51

Why is licking the food item not disgusting, but licking the packaging is? The inside of the packaging has been in contact with the food and has food on it, so it can't be a hygiene thing. And it can't be just the physical sight of someone doing licking, because you'd see them doing that with the ice cream. So why is it disgusting? Also your mouth will often touch the packaging of a food or drink item (lolly stick, takeaway coffee cup etc). It makes no sense at all.

Yellowsubmarinedreams · 11/05/2020 10:59

Only in public. I scrape it in public, lick in private.

LST · 11/05/2020 11:25

@Sparklingbrook how can you not see the comparison 🤣

Sparklingbrook · 11/05/2020 11:26
Confused
Namechange7654321 · 11/05/2020 11:28

I don’t do it. I can understand doing it in the privacy of your own home but not in public.

RibenaMonsoon · 11/05/2020 11:31

What is this madness?
Unless someone has wiped their arse on it, why wouldn't you lick the lid? Of course you could do the more socially acceptable spoon scrape.

I don't like wasting food either. It's a pet peeve.

Megatron · 11/05/2020 11:33

A spoon yes, licking it no. DH does it and it makes me heave. I have misophonia though so this almost sends me over the edge. Grin

oooompa · 11/05/2020 11:35

It's one of the joys of a yogurt. I wouldn't do it in public though, only in the privacy of my own home!

moonset · 11/05/2020 11:37

Ugh it's not the licking of the lid that's the issue here it's the basic lack of manners in public. Do it at home all you like but don't do it in front of your poor colleagues. Thanking my lucky stars I don't have colleagues.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 11/05/2020 11:42

It gives me the boak. It's all thick and horrible. Plus there's really not that much on the lid that it would be waste.
Watching adults lick anything clean when they eat is manky.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 11/05/2020 11:44

Would you pick up your plate in a restaurant and lick that so as not to waste any? 🤢

EugenesAxe · 11/05/2020 11:50

I lick the lid... yes in public I’d probably turn to the side so that people didn’t have to see my tongue, but I still would.

TheNemesisOfLame · 11/05/2020 11:53

You'll get Bloatyhead.

Or at least you did in Theme Hospital.

In private yes of course. In public - be circumspect. Its probably like the way I eat my fried eggs...shove the yolk in my gob all in one go so it explodes in yolky deliciousness...but at home. If I'm out I do a bit of a check to see no-ones looking and if they are I moodily bust the yolk and have to scrape it up with whatever is left on the plate...

LoseLooseLucy · 11/05/2020 11:58

I wouldn't do it. If it was particularly thick on the lid I may scrape it off and mix in with the rest of the yoghurt, but I absolutely wouldn't lick it off.
