Mine is Sandie Shaw. I can't believe it had never occurred to me until tonight that her name is a play on Sandy Shore.

The song Down Under by Men At Work - I am in my 40's and have always sung "....You'd better run, you'd better take a bath," instead of "take cover " - until I realised just yesterday!!

tinkywinkyshandbag · 11/05/2020 21:31

@whatevernext I though something similar, I thought a sandwich was a samwidge

heymammy · 11/05/2020 21:37

Before c19, across the UK, each town and city would keep its own local time according to its longitude, meaning that there would be a time difference between, say, Dover and Plymouth of around 20mins or a difference of around 4mins between London and Oxford. It didn't really matter as people didn't travel far and wide and if they did, it took so long that the odd 10 min difference didn't even register!

With the advancement of the railways it was decided that a standardised "Railway Time" should be introduced then I think this was followed by GMT.

On similar lines to @Ipadipod

Way back when in the days before spam filters I kept seeing emails talking about a sex tape. I vaguely wondered what had been going on in a chain hotel in the French capital.

It was a discussion (decidedly off-topic) on my favourite newsgroup that enlightened me:

"Oh! Paris Hilton is a person!"

tinkywinkyshandbag · 11/05/2020 21:54

@Thighmageddon you can but when you defrost them the yolks will be solid. You have to beat them first.

Tomasinabombadil · 11/05/2020 21:54

The dandelion topic... I live in a semi rural area and when a new neighbour
moved in a few years ago he didn't know what the two yellow flowers at the front of his house were, 1) Dandelion and shock horror 2) Daffodils! He did admit that he was a city lad.Grin

Shortfeet · 11/05/2020 22:04

Sandi Shaw sounds nothing like sandy shore if you are Scottish.

Twinkle twinkle and BBBSheep are similar but NOT The same Tune

Blah1881 · 11/05/2020 22:07

wtf!? So many people not knowing dandelion clocks are in fact dandelions! Bonkers 😂

Cattenberg · 11/05/2020 22:12

@SchadenfreudePersonified, I was going to add that from the equator, a waxing crescent moon looks like a smile, but I know you’d never fall for that.

@Gimmeashake, you’re welcome!

@BikeRunSki, I’d like to ride that solar system cycle path to get my head around the distances.

@mayaginger, I love the idea of someone being sent across space to fetch Pluto in for lunch. I hope s/he wasn’t too sad and lonely out in the void, especially after being demoted.

Pleasebeafleabite · 11/05/2020 22:12

Before c19, across the UK, each town and city would keep its own local time according to its longitude

I read that as COVID-19 rather than 19th century and was reading the whole paragraph like Shock

FairfaxHigh · 11/05/2020 22:21

With Sandie Shaw, isn't it just a phrase that happens to have homophones that are a female first name and a surname thus making a plausible name rather than it necessarily aluding to anything else? It's a bit like that radio station back in the 90s (Atlantic 252) where all the DJs had puns as names e.g Beverley Hills, Dusty Roads, Robin Banks (although I think I read that was his actual name) etc. It was just a cheesy thing they did rather than it having anything to do with the person themselves.

Sarahlou63 · 11/05/2020 22:29

I only found out recently that 'new' potatoes are just normal potatoes that are dug up earlier. I'm 56. Blush

Happyalonewithdog · 11/05/2020 22:33

Carrots are a root vegetable and grow in the ground , courgettes grow much like pumpkins and squash which are vine grown on top of the ground

MsCRobinson · 11/05/2020 22:34

😂
I informed my 16 year old vegan DD...that the fine bone china cup she was drinking out of at her grannies, was made from ground up cow or pig bones...she nearly shit herself... 😂😂 I'll never stop laughing at her reaction.

ALongHardWinter · 11/05/2020 22:34

TwigTheWonderKid It's not just you! Regarding Sadie Shaw's name,I mean. Blush

ALongHardWinter · 11/05/2020 22:35

Sadie? Ffs. Sandie!

ALongHardWinter · 11/05/2020 22:44

The pp's mistake re. song words reminded me that until I was in my mid 30s (20 odd years ago) I thought that the first line of the Hot Chocolate song 'You sexy thing',he was singing 'I believe in Malcolm',not 'I believe in miracles'. I was about 10 when the song first came out,and I can remember thinking 'Who is this Malcolm he believes in?!' Grin

Pleasebeafleabite · 11/05/2020 22:46

the fine bone china cup she was drinking out of at her grannies, was made from ground up cow or pig bones

Nooooooooo

LochJessMonster · 11/05/2020 23:00

I always thought a surprising amount of people were called Tia.

Until I realised it was short for Thanks In Advance

Esspee · 11/05/2020 23:04

@zaphodbeeble. Can’t believe you are a teacher “only female cows produce milk” ?????

All cows produce milk because all cows are female.

Cattle are divided into:- female - cows. male - bulls.

JaneJeffer · 11/05/2020 23:14

Cows is used colloquially to refer to cattle. However to anyone who grew up on a farm cows are female cattle who've had a calf/calves!

lizi311 · 11/05/2020 23:14

I only found out earlier this year that I'm the only person I know who gets pins and needles when I need the toilet (both number 1 &2). I thought everyone did 🤦‍♀️

Graphista · 11/05/2020 23:33

@Ninkanink well as you know it would help me with my disability as means less time bent over undoing shoes and I'm worse after I've been walking about than when I'd be doing them up which would be before being active

Cuban midsole crisis oops sorry

@NCagainwhenwhenwhen you think Richard bacon is intelligent?!

@MedicalMystery1 depends on the type of fizzzy, it's not the fizz that dehydrates it's that the most popular fizzy drinks are caffeinated ones, caffeine is dehydrating. Also fizz fills you up so you might drink less as you feel bloated

Ninkanink · 11/05/2020 23:36

Yes, I think it’ll be a great help! You do need to pull at it with a bit of force, but it’s much easier and quicker than undoing the whole thing the traditional way.

LtdEdition · 12/05/2020 05:10

@Nicknamegoeshere I just wanted to point out that both male and female chickens get eaten. It’s only the egg laying breeds where the males are macerated.
