£30 to spend on 'something' you WANT

My 90 year old grandmother has sent me £30 (cheque- I'll have to actually go to a bank Shock) and asked me to buy myself something - just for me - and write to her to let her know what I've chosen.

It's lovely and I love writing to her but I'm stumped about where to start. I don't ever buy clothing online and am normally a 'browser'. Under normal circumstances I'd have probably gone to Flying Tiger and picked up a few kitschy bits, or some candles. I rarely buy myself something just to cheer myself up, am far more likely to buy something for the kids!

It got me thinking, if you had £30 (just £30- no more!) what would buy?

Two 1000-2000 piece jigsaws

AllTheCakes · 03/05/2020 20:19

How lovely of her. Given that we are stuck indoors so much these days, I would treat myself to some lovely new pyjamas.

WineGummyBear · 03/05/2020 20:21

House plant in a nice pot.

Chickenitalia · 03/05/2020 20:21

I would get a really nice notebook or journal type thing, maybe some pens to go with it. When it’s gift money I always try to get something just a little bit nicer or more expensive than I would buy out of necessity. I’m finding that writing and doodling are something I enjoy at the moment.

If you really needed to spend the money on essentials, I would happily say I spent it on something I already had and use it as needed.

Off topic slightly but have to tried paying it in via mobile banking? You take a picture of the front and back of the cheque.

DDemelza · 03/05/2020 20:23

A detective novel and a nice lipstick.

bettyboo40 · 03/05/2020 20:24

And back on topic I would buy some nice face cream

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/05/2020 20:24

Urban decay eye shadow palette

TwinkleMerrick · 03/05/2020 20:25

Nice lounge wear/pjs :)

WeDontTalkAboutLove · 03/05/2020 20:26

Most banks now allow cheque deposits via their apps OP, if you have a smartphone Smile

To answer your question, I would buy something in the bee print from Sophie Allport, I think. Or order myself some nice flowers.

brentwoodbaby · 03/05/2020 20:28

@chickenitalia no, it's not to be used for essentials- just something nice. I think she has recognised the last few weeks have been tricky for me as I've been wfh full time with kids and a grumpy unhelpful husband!

@bettyboo40 I had no idea you could do this. Off to investigate!

That’s really sweet of her. I’d probably get a nice face mask and a hair mask and have a chilled evening where I emerge softer.

Or loungewear!

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 03/05/2020 20:29

Oh what a nice gift! I'd buy a bottle of really nice wine, a good book and some smellies for a long bath Smile

LionKingOrTigerKing · 03/05/2020 20:30

Perfume

LionKingOrTigerKing · 03/05/2020 20:31

Or some nice bubble bath/bath bombs, face mask. Foot mask, mini bottle of wine and a decent book

CompleteBarstool · 03/05/2020 20:32

A bag, purse or nice keyring?

Something that you'll use daily and get enjoyment from seeing and using

SpeedofaSloth · 03/05/2020 20:33

I would buy some silver earrings I think.

Tulipstulips · 03/05/2020 20:33

Books. That’s what I always buy with birthday money etc.

Bobsandbitz · 03/05/2020 20:33

How lovely of her to send you a gift!!!
I'd buy a nice face cream- I wouldn't normally spend £30 on one (I count £15 as high end!! 😂 I know it's not, but I'm stingy like that!), so that would be a treat!!! Or a perfume.

Danni91 · 03/05/2020 20:33

Do you paint your nails? Dye your hair? Can £30 help if you wanna try something different?

Books / puzzles

Do you have anu DIY ideas? Glue gun cotton etc you want to try yourself?

New cushions for your side of the bed

A litre of vodka and coke?

Cocktails?

Gin and tonic?

6 bottles of cheap but still perfectly drinkable prossecco?

8 bottles of even cheaper wine.....

A night in a premiere inn to get away.......

New nail varnishes in pastel colours

itsamadmadworld · 03/05/2020 20:34

Tresemee hair mask (absolutely love the results but about £10 per tub), foot masks, a book, and some bubble bath.
Or new pillows (10) new duvet (10) and new bedding (10)

Squirrelblanket · 03/05/2020 20:37

I was going to comment that you may be able to pay it in online too. I got a cheque for my birthday last week and did this, it blew my mind! Grin

nancyjuice7 · 03/05/2020 20:39

Some plants /a plant for the garden and send her annual photos of the plant she has bought Smile

Khione · 03/05/2020 20:40

A bird feeding station, feeders and feed (sunflower hearts, peanuts and mealworms)

My feeding station is only a couple of metres from the patio doors and watching the various tits, finch, robins and blackbirds is so relaxing (Oh and the fieldmouse that has just been cleaning up all the dropped bits.

Bertie Bullfinch is particularly endearing. There doesn't seem to be a Mrs Bertie and he is forever reacting to his reflection in the glass. Not sure if he is being narcissistic or fighting himself off but he's making me smile,
