Chat for those who are shielding

AuntieSocia1 · 22/04/2020 16:06

Apologies for the very unsnazzy title but as it suggests a place to chat for those who have to shield at the moment. A few of us have been talking on the the Shielding after lockdown thread in the coronavirus topic.

Thought I'd put this in chat as some days I'm guessing we'll want to chat about anything other than coronavirus!

I know all of our circumstances are quite different as well as the reason we need to shield but it's a pretty big thing to have in common. Despite my username I look forward to interacting with you and as my username suggests I might also slink off from time to time!

^ unless you really really really want some corned beef.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 27/05/2020 15:35

how many days are we on now? i lost count ages ago ha

Potentialmadcatlady · 27/05/2020 16:08

I deliberately stopped counting

Is2020OverYet · 27/05/2020 16:49

Flowers to everyone feeling a bit shit at the moment.

I was offered a food box but turned it down as I have other ways to access food. I also ironically helped set up the community volunteers group to help get shopping etc for vulnerable people (obviously I don't do any of the shopping, I just coordinate the volunteers online).

I just read an article in the guardian about people being told by text that they were no longer on the shielding list. This is awful! I can't link as I'm on my phone, but it was published online this afternoon.

ClientQ · 27/05/2020 16:53

Something like day 67
I'm back working from home and shattered, it's so busy and I don't sleep well at the minute

NervousInYorkshire · 27/05/2020 16:56

I've just seen the guardian article too, @Is2020OverYet - it's horrendous Sad

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/27/phone-texts-notify-cancer-transplant-and-asthma-patients-they-are-off-shielding-list

SweetMarmalade · 27/05/2020 18:23

@NervousInYorkshire that’s bloody awful Sad thank you so much for posting this, at least I can then be prepared that I might just get a text like this.

So those who have received a text what happens next? Do they go back to work before the 30th June?

I shall certainly be querying this if I get a text in the next few days as my GP surgery only rang me last Thursday to tell me about shielding until at least the 30th!

This is an awful way to find out, makes me angry!

SweetMarmalade · 27/05/2020 18:23

30th June that is!

Egghead68 · 27/05/2020 18:47

Good grief! I haven’t had a text or letter taking me out of shielding but I have severe asthma which is says is coming out. What to do? People are waiting to hear if I can go into work in July.

kirstinm · 27/05/2020 18:55

All so frustrating as usual, this texting thing is dreadful. I think (but I'm not sure) that the immunosuppressant information on the shielding NHS page has changed. It seems to be explicitly split into high/low doses now where I don't think it was before? Ie. High dose - shielding, lower dose clinically vulnerable?

FuzzyPuffling · 27/05/2020 19:03

BUT NOT YOU!

That is now our trope.

"We'll be opening shops from June 25th" BUT NOT YOU
"You can get your haircut soon" BUT NOT YOU
"You can meet with another household" BUT NOT YOU
"You'll be able to meet up with friends and family" BUT NOT YOU.
"We'll soon be back to normal" BUT NOT YOU.

I want some decent, considered, thoughtful information. Obviously too much to ask.

MadisonAvenue · 27/05/2020 19:46

Exactly Fuzzy, I’m getting more frustrated with the whole situation by the minute.

I’m not feeling like I’ve got anything to be grateful for either. Apart from the call and letter from the GP surgery a month ago to inform me and my son that we should be shielding I’ve had nothing. No food box, no supermarket slots, no calls to check on me. My son had a call this afternoon though but he was on his cross trainer in the garage and it went to voicemail. The message said that he’d be called again in a few days to check whether he needed help with food etc.

ClientQ · 27/05/2020 19:47

I'm guessing track and trace won't have any effect on shielding. As there's no point sending us all back out and then saying oh well you've been in contact with someone with it. Because knowing we have doesn't decrease the risk!

SweetMarmalade · 27/05/2020 19:54

Would be interesting to know if anyone on this thread has had one of these recent texts advising they need no longer shield?

I’m gobsmacked it’s been done this way! Just awful!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/05/2020 20:10

I had a call today from our hub asking if we're ok for food and medications and I told her yes, she asked if there were any other issues, I told her all of ours and how let die we feel and she gave a sympathetic "I'm sorry, that must be hard" and said goodbye and hung up. 🙄

I didn't even bother to watch today, I can only assume there was nothing for us again. We'll just continue to live in the fucking cupboard until someone deems us worth of coming out, I expect that will be when it's financially beneficial to them in some way.

We got food parcels originally, I had a violent allergic reaction to a ton of soup in one of them (ok not the governments fault) they only provided a parcel to feed DS though, luckily we were getting odds and sods from local form shops etc. Now we have an ASDA weekly delivery slot.

SweetMarmalade · 27/05/2020 21:00

The shielding text is gathering momentum on Twitter. If you search shielding text, lots of people are tweeting about it.

Interesting though that no one has replied to any tweets stating they’ve had a text! Wonder if this news has been leaked! Doesn’t make sense that such an important update on those of us shielding, when we’ve heard nothing for weeks, would not have at least one reply from someone who has received this supposed text!

I don’t doubt there’s some truth in what some of us might receive in the coming days in the form of a text etc, do you think this has been put out there to soften the blow?

NervousInYorkshire · 27/05/2020 21:08

I'm dreading getting a text (if I come off the list).
I'm also dreading lockdown easing up - the guy in the flat downstairs has friends round already who arrived at the same time I was coming inside from the garden and literally followed me through the door but only about two foot away. They're all getting feisty about a barbecue he's having this weekend. I'm too scared of him to report it.

I'm not going to cope well when he's officially allowed to do all this. He and his friends are horrible (I've already been called a name or few for asking them to keep their distance).

BeyondDreamsOfBeyondFourWalls · 27/05/2020 21:23

The article says the text was sent to people who were taken off when the GPs reviewed the list of people who had been advised to shield "automatically" by the government, for having whatever flags on their nhs file. So I don't think it's that asthma has been taken off, more that some people's asthma is not deemed severe enough - by their GP - that they should have gone on the list automatically in the first place. Or at least that's how I read it - could be wrong!

AuntieSocia1 · 27/05/2020 21:39

It's just more confusion and non communication. Very demoralising.

Completely off topic but over the last few nights I've binge watched little fires everywhere just to switch off. I really enjoyed it.

I'll keep an eye on the thread as it looks as though we have almost filled our first shielding chat.

I have felt a lot less alone in this situation thanks to all of you. See you in the next thread. Welcome to all new posters and stay with us shielding lurkers. We will get through this Thanks

The extremely clinically vulnerable must continue to shield. Not sure for how long. BJ just announced now. More to come he says. This is because he knows he's going to have to tell us it will be till at least the end of the year / a vaccine isn't it? He will just keep extending maybe 6 to 12 weeks at a time. He did add that he is looking at more ways to help and support those shielding.

FuckThisWind · 28/05/2020 17:28

Chris Whitty: it will soon hopefully be possible for people, in stages to leave shielding. But for now we must remain cautious.

No mention of the text. I'm wondering if the texts have been sent out to those who were wrongly on the shielding list?

LockdownLucie · 30/05/2020 14:27

After an email to my hospital
several messages to my GP I finally received this NHS letter dated 12th May. Is this the same/similar as the shielding letters most of you have received as mine doesn’t mention an end date and doesn’t say how long for. The head GP at our practice has signed it?

Hope everyone is ok and staying safe?

Thanks
