Furloughed Workers - is your employer topping up to 100%

I think my employee is a bit grumpy that I haven't topped her up to 100%.

I run a very small business, there are 2 of us. We offer a service, which we had to stop as soon as we were locked down. It wasn't safe for us to continue. So from that date there is no income until it is lifted.

If there wasn't the help from the government and I had to continue to pay her, I would have gone bankrupt (sole trader, not a limited company) .

Are you being topped up and what size company do you work for?

DD is on furlough, working for a large pub chain and is not getting topped up. They are paying 80% of average earnings over the 3 months preceeding the pub closure.

WorraLiberty · 07/04/2020 00:01

I've not been furloughed yet but if I am, my employers (council) will be topping up.

Also my DH has been furloughed until at least mid May and luckily his firm (very large organisation) will be topping up.

SkinRash · 07/04/2020 00:10

She should be grateful she's being furloughed. She'll save on any commute costs and get to be safe at home.

I know one of the main global oil companies are only paying 80% furlough, which is ridiculous considering the profits these oil companies make.

ThorsMistress · 07/04/2020 00:18

The company I work for is topping up the 80%. Getting paid my full contracted hours which is good as some weeks I wasn’t working them.

I don’t work for a massive company.

QuakingQuiche · 07/04/2020 00:32

@everybodysang
So you’re saying employees who are still working full time are having a 20% pay cut, as in the exact same as furloughed workers who have to do no work at all? Seems a bit unfair to me

GlummyMcGlummerson · 07/04/2020 01:48

Nope nor do I expect them to.

Fantasiaa · 07/04/2020 04:35

Yes.
Especially because the government cap is far lower than I earn so it would be such a financial struggle.

LoisSanger · 07/04/2020 04:49

I haven’t been furloughed (yet) but I do work from home all the time anyway. Company is losing money at the moment though so something is going to have to happen. Am worried about it due to the cap as would be a significant pay cut.

Ragwort · 07/04/2020 08:27

Quaking I don’t think you can use the usual rules of ‘fairness’ in this situation, it is a totally new, unprecedented way of life. Many will not have jobs to return to after furlough, bleating on about fairness is unlikely to win you any favours.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 07/04/2020 08:48

Mine is ..and we are really grateful that they are being so generous in the circumstances.

SweetPetrichor · 07/04/2020 09:25

I'm furloughed and my employer are topping up to 90%. Senior staff also took a 10% pay cut back when this got bad so there's more money to go around. We're one of the big name engineering consultancies.

JockTamsonsBairns · 07/04/2020 10:15

Ds (21) has worked for a pub chain for 3 years, and has been told that he'll be topped up to 90% for twelve weeks. I've been really pleasantly surprised by how good an employer they are tbh.

okiedokieme · 07/04/2020 12:07

Still working, awaiting the results of the lockdown next week to make a decision

wineandcheeseplease · 07/04/2020 12:08

No, but I'd rather 80% than zero

WittyW00 · 09/04/2020 18:16

My husband has been furloughed and so will get 80% BUT this will be only his basic wage and as a sales person that means he will only get about 80% of a third of his wages and still be taxed on that for his company car etc which he obviously isn’t using ... sad times but I don’t expect his employer to do any different.. these are businesses at the end of the day

WTFdidwedo · 09/04/2020 18:25

Yes my large restaurant chain is paying 100% until the end of May to every employee.

sleepychunky · 09/04/2020 18:57

I'm still working and still on normal salary. About 40% of staff have been furloughed on full pay. I have taken on 2 furloughed staff members' jobs so am doing 3 times as much for the same as colleagues are getting for doing nothing.

Shadow01 · 09/04/2020 19:20

No I’m on 80% but I know a lot of people are worse off and I know it won’t be forever.
