Furloughed Workers - is your employer topping up to 100%

I think my employee is a bit grumpy that I haven't topped her up to 100%.

I run a very small business, there are 2 of us. We offer a service, which we had to stop as soon as we were locked down. It wasn't safe for us to continue. So from that date there is no income until it is lifted.

If there wasn't the help from the government and I had to continue to pay her, I would have gone bankrupt (sole trader, not a limited company) .

Are you being topped up and what size company do you work for?

Nope. First they tried to make parents take unpaid leave due to childcare not being compatible with working. They also tried to take their costs out of the 80% until told they couldn’t. I expect to be made redundant after a few months anyway.

The pay was less upsetting than the lack of communication and care. The goal was to save money at all times, rather than any consideration for staff wellbeing.

june2007 · 06/04/2020 12:21

No.

Hermie12 · 06/04/2020 12:21

No just the 80% which I’m relieved to be getting. It means I get to stay home safe with our daughter whilst DH works long shifts for NHS. I’d rather the company save as much money as they can in the hope we can come out the other side with me still having a job to return to .

Fishcakey · 06/04/2020 12:22

Nope. Just glad I'm keeping my job.

DarkDarkNight · 06/04/2020 12:24

I think it would be a nice gesture from a large nationwide or international organisation with big profits. I don’t think i5 should be expected of someone in a situation like yours.

80% is a good amount. People should be incurring less expenses (socialising, petrol etc.) during lockdown.

DarkDarkNight · 06/04/2020 12:25

That’s terrible Makegoodchoices Angry

potter5 · 06/04/2020 12:26

Yes. Getting 100%.Company topping up at the moment. Who knows about the future though.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/04/2020 12:27

Nope. Our factory has had to shut so we have all been furloughed, there are about 150 employees in total. Our employer can't afford to pay us all the 20% while we aren't trading.

I'm fine with it, I'd much rather see the business survive so that I have a job to go back to!

Sparklyring · 06/04/2020 12:28

Global retail company here, full pay until April 11th then 80%.

MrsSpenserGregson · 06/04/2020 12:31

Same here - suspect we work for the same employer @Sparklyring Smile

Very grateful to have the 80%

EnglishGirlApproximately · 06/04/2020 12:39

Yes, being topped up to 100% and also getting my monthly car allowance. Travel industry so not only is there no business coming in, we're also going to be paying g out millions in refunds (global business). I was job hunting before this as I have many frustrations with the company but this is making me think again as we are being given constant reassurance that staff will be the last cost saving to be made. I feel very lucky right now.
DP works for a multinational retailer and is getting 100% but of course no bonus. We are in the odd and very fortunate position of being better off at the moment so we're saving hard just in case.

Glenthebattleostrich · 06/04/2020 12:47

I have an employee and I'm struggling to find the 80% I have to pay her next month to be honest. She's getting that and I'll be lucky to have enough money to buy food. Yes I know I'll get it back eventually but it's a bloody nightmare. There is zero coming in and because we are a very small childcare setting still stuff going out. I'm in the shielded group so can't even open for key workers 😒

DHs company is paying 100% for those on less than £22000 and then 80% to the rest.

Kez200 · 06/04/2020 12:53

She may save money being home too. No driving. No parking. Cheaper lunches?

I sure most wont have the funds to top up

The4ks · 06/04/2020 12:58

Nope.
Massive pub chain.

GreenWheat · 06/04/2020 13:02

Jo, because those still working are all taking a voluntary 10% pay cut. Topping up would mean furloughed workers would be earning more of their salary than those still working.

GreenWheat · 06/04/2020 13:02

No, not Jo!

CrocodileFondue · 06/04/2020 13:02

Nope. My DH is very happy to get 80% now he's furloughed, he was looking at doing the whole lockdown on statutory sick. No chance his employer would pay the rest, they are skint.

Ludoole · 06/04/2020 13:04

My employer is topping up 100% of basic pay however they have removed my shift allowance, which means a 25% drop of my regular income that I have become dependent on over the last 4 and a half years.

Shotofvodka · 06/04/2020 13:07

Big national company here and they’re topping up to 90%

Whattodo62 · 06/04/2020 13:12

No they aren't topping us up to 100%. Understandable from their perspective as why would they, it would make them less profit. Nevermind that I'm going on mat leave and was counting on that money 🤦‍♀️

TheoriginalLEM · 06/04/2020 13:15

No, large veterinary corporate. We have taken a real hit so i am thankful to get anything and rather be able to keep my job.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 06/04/2020 13:19

It really depends on the level of salary they are on? Anyone over say £40k is taking a massive cut due to the £2.5k furlough cap and so even with a mortgage holiday could be in massive financial difficulty

As a comparison DH earns £20k per year and so is "only" losing £200 a month roughly on furlough

I earn closer to £60k and my income has been more than halved

Osquito · 06/04/2020 13:20

DP’s company has stated they will top up the remainder 20%. Large company, part of the food chain, so I believe they can afford it. They would also struggle if their staff decided to leave for a better offer (competitive market and lots of training involved).

inwood · 06/04/2020 13:21

Anyone on furlough whose salary would drop below 25k pa is being topped up.

All staff not furloughed have been asked to take a 10-50% pay cut again subject to the 25k floor.

Parky04 · 06/04/2020 13:22

DW has been furloughed and is only getting 80%. Works for garden centre.
