Furloughed Workers - is your employer topping up to 100%

I think my employee is a bit grumpy that I haven't topped her up to 100%.

I run a very small business, there are 2 of us. We offer a service, which we had to stop as soon as we were locked down. It wasn't safe for us to continue. So from that date there is no income until it is lifted.

If there wasn't the help from the government and I had to continue to pay her, I would have gone bankrupt (sole trader, not a limited company) .

Are you being topped up and what size company do you work for?

Yes. There are 18 employees. I work in the fundraising sector. When people are saving money, charities are the first things to go.

I think your employee is acting a bit entitled.

Kahlua4me · 06/04/2020 13:24

I run my own company and will definitely be topping up for as long as I can. I don’t want them to be out of pocket and will certainly want them to to feel valued and come back once it is all over.

Paddingtonthebear · 06/04/2020 13:25

Nope, very small business

transformandriseup · 06/04/2020 13:25

80% for me but topped up to 100% as I can work from home.

InvisibleToEveryone · 06/04/2020 13:30

Only in some circumstances.

If you are willing to be redeployed then yes.

If you're not then its unpaid leave, but still have your job to go back to when we reopen.

We've had a letter giving various pay outcomes covering most options.
I think they've worked it out fairly to be honest.

bobbityboop · 06/04/2020 13:34

My company (global company) has furloughed 70 of its 400 workers. They were going to top it up to 100% but there was outrage amongst the remaining staff that people were being paid to sit at home whilst others still had to remain on site (due to the nature of the work), so the company compromised to 90%.

Nixen · 06/04/2020 13:48

@transformandriseup if you’re working from home then you aren’t furloughed. You aren’t legally allowed to do any work if you’re furloughed

WellTidy · 06/04/2020 13:54

We are topping up our nanny to 100%. That assumes that we will qualify for the furlough subsidy at all - this isn’t 100% certain. This is the third week that she has been off. It can’t last forever, but we will revisit at the start of May if we are still in the same situation then.

Ozgirl75 · 06/04/2020 14:07

We have furloughed 3/4 of our staff and won’t be topping up as we need as much money as possible to keep going as our revenue has fallen off a cliff. Husband and I are directors and aren’t drawing a salary. Was a successful small business making £200,000 profit last year so we are doing all we can to keep going so the staff have jobs to come back to.

MamaGee09 · 06/04/2020 14:11

We are all just getting 80% of wages, dh small family business, son works for a small family business and I work for a national hospitality company.

None of us are getting topped up, just glad to be getting paid something!

trappedsincesundaymorn · 06/04/2020 14:37

My employer is, which was a surprise because we all thought it would be 80%. We're waiting to see what the "catch" is when we are (hopefully) working again. Trust me with my employers there will be a "catch".

trappedsincesundaymorn · 06/04/2020 14:40

Forgot to ad...it is a very large well known designer so in the UK alone there are at least 700 production staff as well as warehouse and retail staff.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 06/04/2020 14:44

@trappedsincesundaymorn

I hear you - there is always a catch!

My employer said they would top us up.....but we had to accept 30% pay cuts first and they would only then top up a proportion of the reduced wage. Even if furlough ends at the end of May like it is supposed to the pay cut we had to accept will be in for longer and after May there is unlikely to be further mortgage holiday extensions

TWD89 · 06/04/2020 14:46

No - 80% here in a company of 20ish employees.

Whattodo62 · 06/04/2020 14:56

@transformandriseup but you can't work whilst furloughed?

Ragwort · 06/04/2020 15:01

No and I am fine with that. (Approx 1500 people on furlough, a few key people retained to cover ‘essential’ work). My DH has had to keep working and have a 15% pay cut and cover the work of the furloughed people. He still realises he is in a fortunate position.

Does your employee not appreciate the long term implications to the economy? Many companies just will not survive and then she won’t be paid anything. Sad.

help1653 · 06/04/2020 15:20

I would love to be furloughed on 80% of salary at the moment, would make things a lot easier. Not an option though.

lakeswimmer · 06/04/2020 16:38

No - I'm furloughed at 80% and think that's fair. I've got colleagues who are still working and I don't think it's right that I should be off work and paid the same as someone who's having to WFH.

In DH's company the furloughed workers are being topped up to 100% and yet he's still working full-time while they're off.

Sparklyring · 06/04/2020 21:26

@MrsSpenserGregson Me too! Hopefully we can bounce back quick!

Starlight1243 · 06/04/2020 21:29

I work for a leisure centre as a swimming teacher we are getting topped up with the extra 20 percent but it's the council and we get a generous pension

BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 06/04/2020 22:12

I have furloughed my employees at 100% for 3 months. After that we will see

stanski · 06/04/2020 22:13

Mine is 100%. 8 employees

Figgygal · 06/04/2020 22:16

No only 80% or cap of £2.5k which is then subject to normal deductions
Will cause financial hardship for many as many are high earners
1000 staff in U.K.

Iseethesilverlining · 06/04/2020 22:16

Furloughed and getting £2500 (Max govt grant) + a %age of the difference between £50k and salary - effectively means I am on 45% of usual salary.

MrsWicket · 06/04/2020 22:41

DH - 80%, no top up.
Me company wide 5% pay cut this month and 10% pay cut next month. Told this two days before pay day.
