Flour - where has all the flour gone?

Are people hoarding it? It’s been 4 weeks since I’ve managed to get any

Ideally bread flour but I’d settle for plain

I tried doves farm direct but they say they’ve been so busy they have stopped selling to public too

I’ve not been able to get flour for weeks either, thought my online shop was bringing some last night but nothing. Bit frustrated with the folk producing salt dough hand print plaques on Facebook groups.
But not much I can really do, guess macaroni cheese and things will be out the window until I can get some again. It does seem to be the one thing that you still can’t get.

I’m so close at being able to checkout on the Matthew cotswold flour website but it’s taking long time

Delivery is 14 days too, hoping I might find some by then 🤞🏻

I tried all our local flour mills and they have all closed down fully

We’ve used a bread maker for years but having to resort to shop bread now as can’t get the flour. Did get some SR flour a few days ago from a Tesco which I was really pleased about as my 3 daughters have their birthdays coming up and I can bake them birthday cakes, hooray!

Bluearsedfly36 · 01/04/2020 11:21

I managed to get a 16kg bag of bread flour on amazon yesterday after searching for ages. Not sure if they still have it but may be worth a look.

Clutterbugsmum · 01/04/2020 11:23

Try you local corner shop. I haven't been able to get any Asda and Tesco, but manage to get both bread and self raising flour in the little shop. And neither were over priced.

HarrietThePi · 01/04/2020 11:25

The only people I'd be annoyed at, are ones using to make salt dough or whatever that fake playdoh is called. There's a time and a place for that stuff, and I don't think the right time is when things are in short supply! If people are buying flour to bake bread or make food they don't usually make, I think that's great.

Binterested · 01/04/2020 11:28

Loving the ‘I’ve loved them since I saw them perform live in an obscure dive bar with only 15 people in the audience, long before they became famous’ vibe to some of these posts Grin

Nobody owns flour. Not even Paul Hollywood. Keeping children occupied is a perfectly legitimate use of flour - just as legitimate as feeding your daily sourdough habit.

And no I don’t have any flour and yes I would like some (toad in the hole is calling me).

NemophilistRebel · 01/04/2020 11:28

@harrietthepi - totally agree

Get baking just don’t go wasting Grin

@Espoleta (or anyone else who needs)

Happy to send you some yeast if you PM your address. I have 2 sachets dated Apr 2020

AiryFairyMum · 01/04/2020 13:03

Fucks me right off too. The rest of us bake all year round and now we can't get our regular supply. If we didn't usually do this, it wouldn't have been available in shops for everyone to panic buy.

flipperdoda · 01/04/2020 13:46

@stitchwitch85 I'm with you on people taking GF flour when they don't need it. I do sort of understand why they're doing it, but when I'm already so restricted it's a tough pill to swallow.

The good thing is it seems to have stopped happening here. People have probably realised you can't just substitute it into 'normal' recipes and expect it to behave the same way Grin

SpiderVictim · 01/04/2020 14:19

Did anyone manage to by flour from the Matthews' site this morning?

I tried multiple times between around 10 and 12 midday, but couldn't even manage to view the products (kept getting a 504 error message), never mind add them to my basket and check out 😩

I suspect the site couldn't cope with the amount of traffic. Having said that, I'm a member of their baking club and didn't get any notification that the online shop was reopening today - just saw it by chance in the early hours of this morning while up feeding my 5 month old.

SpiderVictim · 01/04/2020 14:27

^buy flour 🙄

NemophilistRebel · 01/04/2020 14:30

I tried for 2 hours and got close but couldn’t check out

I bought some 00 flour instead from Souschef

SpiderVictim · 01/04/2020 14:43

Thanks @Nemophilist

I've only ever used 00 for pizza bases before. From what I read, it has a lower gluten content so probably not suited to my needs (sourdough baking).

Will try Matthews again tomorrow, starting at 8:59 am!

Lochroy · 01/04/2020 14:49

Probably a lot to idiots who don't realise it doesn't keep indefinitely.

NemophilistRebel · 01/04/2020 14:53

Yes not too sure how it would turn out in sourdough.il be using for pizza based, French bread and hopefully it will work for my toad in the holes too 🤞🏻

Apparently some of the local mills are not selling to the public, but keeping their local artisan bakeries supplied - so everyone gets the chance of bread & the bakers stay in business

sniffysnifferson · 01/04/2020 17:43

I've been to our local aldi today and they had all types of flour.
Granted the shelves weren't fully stocked with it, but they had enough

chilledteacher · 01/04/2020 21:54

I've just been successful here. Mainly supply school kitchens which are mostly closed at the moment.

Impatientwino · 01/04/2020 22:08

Thanks for the Thomas Ridley tip! Just placed my order and seems to have gone through ok!

MotherOfDragonite · 01/04/2020 22:12

I'm sorry (genuinely) -- it's me! And people like me, who are doing lots of baking with their kids. And I've always loved baking bread but never had the time... now I do...

I only bought two bags of flour but it's two more than I would usually buy. I suspect there are lots of others who have done the same!

RoseMartha · 01/04/2020 22:23

I think it has gone to the same place as eggs because I cant get any of them either!
