Flour - where has all the flour gone?

Are people hoarding it? It’s been 4 weeks since I’ve managed to get any

Ideally bread flour but I’d settle for plain

I tried doves farm direct but they say they’ve been so busy they have stopped selling to public too

i was so pleased to at last get some plain flour yesterday(yay yorkshires) was very little though.
so glad I always have a stock of bread flour(just need yeast)

ExpletiveDelighted · 01/04/2020 07:40

We always have big bags of plain, self raising and bread flour in. Finished the plain a couple of weeks ago and haven't found any more (I'm only doing one Sainsburys shop a week), my yeast is nearly all gone too but I don't want to make special trips to other shops on the off chance. Annoying.

Groovee · 01/04/2020 07:42

Haven't been able to get Wholemeal flour or yeast. One of our corner shops had plain and self raising. My baking powder is due to expire on the 3rd too.

SaltySeaBird · 01/04/2020 07:46

Can’t get yeast or strong flour at all. Do have half a bag of plain in the cupboard and icing sugar, no caster. I bake semi regularly and these are things I’d normally buy but can’t find now. I do have toilet roll and pasta though as they were back in stock!

Hippofrog · 01/04/2020 07:47

In my mother’s pantry, she has About 10 large bags but bakes a lots. She also has 2 dozen eggs delivered weekly from a neighbour with chickens. I deliver her shopping as she’s shielded and she’s making me cakes, pies and quiches weekly 😀

peppapigonaloop · 01/04/2020 07:48

might Be worth looking at wholesalers/restaurant suppliers if you no anyone who works in that area. One local to us has opened up their usual restaurant supplies to general public to order. Big bags of flour etc. We are getting through tons as kids love to bake..

SnuggyBuggy · 01/04/2020 07:48

What actually happens if you try to make bread with plain flour?

OneEpisode · 01/04/2020 07:51

We’ve been making bread with ordinary plains flour (and self raising) for years. It’s definitely bread. Fine for the family, but won’t win baking competitions.

SnuggyBuggy · 01/04/2020 07:53

I can imagine Paul Hollywood poking it and saying "you've used plain flour haven't you?" Grin

Almahart · 01/04/2020 07:56

We never usually bake - two parents working full time. We’re now baking bread and making pizza and youngest dc is making cakes and pastry. We’ve used more flour in a fortnight than we would usually in six months. So it doesn’t surprise that demand is up.

Samcro · 01/04/2020 07:56

i am dreading running out of yeast. I do love my bread maker.

gingerbeerandlemonade · 01/04/2020 08:04

I can't get flour either. DH has gone to various shops to find it but it's not there. My children love to bake so it's very frustrating and they love having pancakes etc. I'm looking into grounding oats as an alternative.

Daffodil101 · 01/04/2020 08:07

It’s bloody annoying. I use a lot of floor because I cook from scratch a lot. Suddenly it’s being hoarded by people who will probably chuck it away.

I also walk 50km per week, have done for seven years. Suddenly everyone is at it.

Trend setter, me.

BikeRunSki · 01/04/2020 08:10

Make soda bread! Plain flour, bicarb, sour milk or butter milk, or thinned down yoghurt. You can sour fresh milk with a few drops of lemon juice.

Impatientwino · 01/04/2020 08:14

I have a couple of sachets of yeast dated Apr 2020 going spare. Happy to dettol the sachet then put them in the post to a couple of people who have flour without yeast! No point in me having them as I have no bread flour! PM me with address and the next time I'm passing a post box I'll send them.

Have a small amount of plain for Yorkshire puddings and pancakes so the DC are happy.

ChainsawBear · 01/04/2020 08:21

Try local Asian/Polish groceries if you have them. I found flour there easily when it wasn't in the main supermarkets.

MrsJBaptiste · 01/04/2020 08:23

Everybody is baking! 🎂

We managed to get some plain and self-raising flour in Home Bargains and GF flour in M&S.

Espoleta · 01/04/2020 08:24

I would happily trade some bread flour for some yeast?
My DP has taken over making bread, but he’s been making different loads to me which are yeast heavier than I normally make and we can’t find yeast for love nor money!

ExpletiveDelighted · 01/04/2020 08:25

We don't have any local small shops, well there are one or two in far flung ends of town but the supermarkets are far nearer. I might try a farm shop when I order meat and veg at the weekend.

JudgeRindersMinder · 01/04/2020 08:26

For those looking for yeast, I’m pretty sure Asda give away fresh yeast at the bakery counter if you ask

Samtsirch · 01/04/2020 08:28

I think people are also making play dough as well as baking bread etc.

ivykaty44 · 01/04/2020 08:30

My local mill and farm shops have bread flour, have you tried Facebook for local deliveries etc

ivykaty44 · 01/04/2020 08:33

@samcro www.theverge.com/2020/3/31/21199708/yeast-diy-baking-covid-19-shortage-make-it-yourself-bread

Make your own yeast now for when you run out

drspouse · 01/04/2020 08:33

We always make all our own bread and we're just thinking of all these tins of yeast sitting in people's houses that don't know what to do with it.

Ifeel1000yearsold · 01/04/2020 08:34

Haven’t been able to get it at supermarkets but managed at a small weigh your own shop
