Flour - where has all the flour gone?

Are people hoarding it? It’s been 4 weeks since I’ve managed to get any

Ideally bread flour but I’d settle for plain

I tried doves farm direct but they say they’ve been so busy they have stopped selling to public too

Plenty of recipes on line for bread using ordinary flour and no yeast - including bread made with beer. But no flour in supermarkets around here for weeks either although some small traders have plain/self raising.

Student DS (stuck in his Uni digs) announced the other day that he thought he'd give bread making a go as he has time on his hands. I wished him luck with sourcing the ingredients
and expressed my horror at the thought of him kneading bread on the worktop in a student kitchen

Theworldisfullofgs · 01/04/2020 08:35

No flour....and I live near Dove's farm...
No flour anywhere and I usually make our bread.

Fishlegs · 01/04/2020 08:35

We always have flour in for baking, but the kids seem to be having pancakes every day atm (although that may change soon with the egg situation....) and we were running low. Happily our corner shop has plenty so crisis averted for now Smile

stitchwitch85 · 01/04/2020 08:38

What fucks me off is that, in the absence of normal flour, people in my town have been buying up the gluten free flour. I’ve even seen a shop assistant directing someone to it when asked about ordinary flour. It may seem a petty gripe, but I can’t have ordinary flour and I do a lot of my own baking due to commercial gluten free cake and biscuits being rubbish (also I just like baking). So now I can’t get the flour I need. Really quite annoying.

NemophilistRebel · 01/04/2020 08:41

@stitchwitch85 that would really make me cross if I had needed gluten free
People shouldn’t be taking specialist dietary foods unless they need them! Angry

One of our local bakeries is giving away sourdough starter which is good in the absence of yeast.

KittenVsBox · 01/04/2020 08:43

According to Facebook, everyone is making playdoh and salt dough. Masses of flour being played with, would be my guess Angry. Ditto for rice, pasta and cornflour.

hiredandsqueak · 01/04/2020 08:50

Exh got me flour when he paid for his petrol at the spar shop but haven't been able to get it from the supermarket for a few weeks now.

renegadeoffunk · 01/04/2020 08:55

I always have flour in as I like baking but I haven't seen any eggs in the shops (supermarket, local or farm shop) for ages. Surely people aren't stock piling a fresh food like eggs! Hmm

NemophilistRebel · 01/04/2020 09:00

I’m isolating so haven’t been to corner shops. Might have to ask a kind friend to see if they spot any

I've been trying to get hold of spelt flour for weeks. I thought we were getting some in our ocado delivery last week but it was substituted with regular strong bread flour. So if anyone sees any spelt flour anywhere please let me know :)

Footle · 01/04/2020 09:22

@espoleta, you probably know this already but a small amount of yeast goes further if you can let it have extra time to prove.

Oldraver · 01/04/2020 09:29

Have a look at Mathews Cotswold Flour on FB .

Oldraver · 01/04/2020 09:31

They are taking new online orders 9-12 pm today

NemophilistRebel · 01/04/2020 09:34

Amazing thank you!

SerendipitySunshine · 01/04/2020 09:49

I bet it's all being hoarded by people who wont use it or being played with like playdoh. Fuckers!

Hoggleludo · 01/04/2020 09:55

Same here! We always have pancakes for my SEN child for breakfast. And I hand make Yorkshire's.

But I can't for the life of me get any flour!

Anyone who thinks they might have some that won't get used. I'll buy it please!

dayslikethese1 · 01/04/2020 10:03

Yeah I've noticed that too, no flour for wks here now. I hope ppl aren't wasting it. I managed to buy some on Amazon finally.

missyoumuch · 01/04/2020 10:04

I'm in a few cooking-related Facebook groups. People are not hoarding, they are baking like mad. I honestly wonder if there will be a post-COVID obesity crisis with the amount of cakes, bread, and biscuits that are being prepared around the country.

Noodlenosefraggle · 01/04/2020 10:12

I made a sourdough starter through lack of yeast and it did use up a surprising amount of flour just to feed the thing! I hope it doesnt all get chucked out by people who make a couple of cakes and then get fed up. The food waste is appalling. If it's being used, then that's fair enough.

Murinae · 01/04/2020 10:14

I got my bread maker out yesterday as we had run out of bread. It’s probably been in the cupboard for 10 years. Used the bread and yeast that was in my brexit box! Flour was a year out of date but was fine and the yeast was still in date. The bread turned out lovely. Plan on making scones later. Working full time gives me no time to bake normally.

ChainsawBear · 01/04/2020 10:16

Baking is fun, relaxing, engaging for children, and can reduce your need for trips to the shop for bread. Of course people are doing more of it right now. It doesn't make them incompetent dilettantes who don't know what to do with their ingredients. Yes it's annoying not to be able to get your hands on what you want, but such is life for all of us at the moment.

Almahart · 01/04/2020 10:42

These sniffy posts about people hoarding and wasting flour are ridiculous. Everyone I know is baking more to a) reduce daily trips to buy bread b) entertain kids.

You don’t have a monopoly on flour because you’ve been making bread since 1991.

Cohle · 01/04/2020 10:43

People are just baking more Confused

We like fresh bread and can't go to the shops every day or two to get it now. Plus I don't normally have enough time to bake, but now I do.

I don't think people buying up bread are wasteful idiots who are somehow less entitled to it than you.

NemophilistRebel · 01/04/2020 10:54

Same with me. I bake every 2 days but I’m not hoarding it Hmm
