Are people hoarding it? It’s been 4 weeks since I’ve managed to get any

Ideally bread flour but I’d settle for plain

I tried doves farm direct but they say they’ve been so busy they have stopped selling to public too

BakerSuperMum thanks for those links.
Can I ask what the difference is beween the below please?

  • Bakers Strong Flour
  • Bread Flour
I normally just buy Aldi Bread Flour, used in a home breakmaker for various white breads and also ds2 has started making hot cross buns.
Rebelwithallthecause · 10/04/2020 09:42

I drove past our local flour mill yesterday and there was a huge number of lorries queueing to get inside for loading.
I’ve never seen anything like it.
There were clouds of flour in the air and the ground looked like it had been snowing

I think this while situation should kickstart supermarkets into offering a pay and weigh service for flour and some other foods too.

Yesterdayforgotten · 10/04/2020 11:25

whole*

GinAndTonicNeeded · 10/04/2020 17:15

A local shop has just got some, advertising it on Facebook £1 A bag. I cheered then saw it was only 300g... I couldn't even make my normal loaf with that!

I do cook from scratch as well as bake a lot and didn't realise how much flour I use, for silly stuff e.g. I made Scotch Eggs and used flour to dust the sausage meats so I could shape it.

Making a roux for white sauces, when making Lasagna, or a pie filling etc.

I have some left, but I'm carefully rationing it....

ExpletiveDelighted · 10/04/2020 17:33

I'm ok for plain and SR now but very low on bread flour.

timtam23 · 10/04/2020 19:15

Some of my local small shops are managing to get big wholesale sacks of flour & are bagging up 500g quantities to sell. I've managed to get all of plain, SR and bread flour from them. Still no flour at all in my local supermarket though.

For anyone who needs GF flour, Holland and Barrett sells it and their branches are still open. I saw some in my local G&B last week. Some branches also sell spelt flour and buckwheat flour if anyone needs those.

ExpletiveDelighted · 10/04/2020 19:50

We haven't got any local small shops unfortunately. Just supermarkets. Might try a farmshop next week when we need more fruit and veg.

Rebelwithallthecause · 10/04/2020 19:52

Expletive - use plain flour for your bread if you get desperate.
It’s not as perfect as bread flour but still gives a decently edible loaf when needs must

ExpletiveDelighted · 10/04/2020 19:58

Thanks, I have just made hot cross bums with plain and they've come out lovely, nice soft texture but well risen.

SoupDragon · 10/04/2020 20:47

hot cross bums

🤣😂😂

misscockerspaniel · 10/04/2020 21:29

Yay - bought a bag of bread flower from Waitrose today Smile

misscockerspaniel · 10/04/2020 21:31

Its plain flour I need and cannot get; bread flour I found no issues acouple of weeks ago in Lidl

redeyetonowheregood · 10/04/2020 21:44

I was thrilled to find some flour in a marks and Spencer at a garage today. Thrilled. Tomorrow I shall bake☺️

delilahbucket · 10/04/2020 21:46

Got a big bag of self raising in Aldi yesterday. I was so happy 😂

Yesterdayforgotten · 10/04/2020 21:50

@delilahbucket what time did you go to Aldi? Ahh I'm still unable to find anymore flour.

delilahbucket · 10/04/2020 22:11

@Yesterdayforgotten
About 1:30pm. I was amazed as everything was full. It's only a small store but busy.

Yesterdayforgotten · 10/04/2020 22:14

delilahbucket you hit it lucky there, I will have to try going in the afternoon. It's so difficult to know when they will get flour in stock and on what day and even the staff arent told.

LazyFace · 12/04/2020 14:07

Thank you for the poster upthread who recommended the realplasticfree website, I managed to get 16kgs of white bread flour from them.
I also went to our local farm shop and got 1 kg of organic wholemeal flour for a bargain price of £3.50.... a total rip off but at least I avoided the busy supermarkets.

Fleab1te · 12/04/2020 15:18

Oh good. Glad I was of some useGrin

Chasingsquirrels · 15/04/2020 17:17

I ordered bread flour and plain flour from BFP over the weekend and it was delivered today, which I thought was good with it having been Easter.
The bread flour is a good price, the plain is more than I'd normally pay (Tesco or Aldi own brand) but I'd have had to pay £10 delivery if I'd just had the bread flour so thought I might as well add in the plain and get free delivery.
Ds2 is very pleased and we've had pa cakes for lunch and he made hot cross buns this afternoon.
Now I'll have to hope we don't run out of yeast too quickly! They do sell that aswell but I really didn't want a minimum of 10kg when I normally buy 100g pots.

JellyFishSquish · 17/04/2020 10:49

We've just had a delivery from BFP as well. Thanks to this thread. Thank you MNers!

Yesterdayforgotten · 17/04/2020 10:54

I can't justify buying flour online because it is so expensive compared to the flour I usually buy in Aldi where I pay about 45p per 1.5kg. Wish I could though as I miss baking with flour!

Groovee · 23/04/2020 16:55

Our local Morrison's is selling 1kg bags of strong bread flour for 60p.

Our local bakery is selling baking flours and yeast.
