I have no grandparents left, my last died when I was 27. Yet I know someone who is almost 30 and has all of her grandparents still living. Can't help but feel a little jealous.

OP posts:

I was 19. Now I’m
40 and I have friends who still have several grandparents. I am envious.

okiedokieme · 08/03/2020 11:46

30, exh has grandparents at nearly 50!

LookStupidInEverything · 08/03/2020 11:46

I lost both granddads before I was 5. My Gran at 14. My Nana at 23 and Dad at 24 (same year).

My DD is 2.5 and both her grandfather's are long gone Sad and she's unlikely to know either grandmother, it makes me so sad.

lucymaudmonty · 08/03/2020 11:47

36

  1. Maternal grandmother. I didn't know her that well as she lived overseas and we only met once or twice a year. She was also pretty awful to my Mum a lot of the time.

I was 11 when my toxic paternal grandmother died. Both grandfathers died long before i was born.

My kids now in their 20s has two full sets until last year when both grandfathers died.

slipperywhensparticus · 08/03/2020 11:48

32?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 08/03/2020 11:48
  1. DH still has one and he's 43
BikeRunSki · 08/03/2020 11:48

My GPs died 4 years before I was born, when I was 10 and the last 2 within a fortnight when I was 19.

DH’s last HP didn’t die until he was 36.

PrincessMargaret · 08/03/2020 11:49

49 when my GF died. 45 with both GMs. Dd is 15 and none left already.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 08/03/2020 11:50

I'm 50 next month. My maternal Grandfather is still alive.

Chanel05 · 08/03/2020 11:52

I'm 30 and I have three of my four grandparents left. I'm not very close to one set but my nan is my favourite person ever and I'll be devastated when I lose her. My grandad (her husband) died when I was 13 and I took that very hard as we were extremely close.

Stillabitemo · 08/03/2020 11:54
  1. I had five (great granny and two full sets) when I was born, lost four by the time I was about 12 and just had my nan until 27.
CherryPavlova · 08/03/2020 11:55

Only ever known my maternal grandparents. Four when grandad died. Fourteen when grandmother died.

Quartz2208 · 08/03/2020 11:55

Still have one who is nearly 96 (I’m 40) lost one at 20 one at 35 and one very recently. I’m lucky though the youngest one was 85 when he went (others 87 and 89)

Badtasteflump · 08/03/2020 11:55

I had lost them all, and a parent, by my teens. Try not to compare with others OP, although I know that's hard.

I’m 33 and still have one grandparent left, although she’s not in great health. I lost my first aged 10.

Scbchl · 08/03/2020 11:58

My mums dad died when I was about four. I never knew him. My dads parents were dead before I was born. My mums mum is 83 and still alive but I'm not close to her and don't see her much, shes very self righteous. Her sister was more like my gran and she died in September 18. I think I'd of had a great relationship with my dads mum had I met her. Just going by how close I am to my dad and how well they got on and she sounds similar to me as a mum.

My husbands maternal grandparents died in an accident together, before he was born. His paternal grandfather died in the war and his paternal gran died about 14 years ago.

Lolly86 · 08/03/2020 12:00

26 but my husband is now 45 and still has his Nan who is 97

Mombie2016 · 08/03/2020 12:01

I'm 33 and still have 3 of my GPs. One died when I was 12, he was only 52 Sad Brain tumour. The others are all mid to late 70s now.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 08/03/2020 12:01

I'd rather have had loving and caring grandparents for a shorter time than the uncaring and indifferent ones I had for longer ( including the one who is still alive - I have no contact with him now )

My grandad who died when I was a baby was by all accounts a lovely man who was very happy to become to a grandfather. I'm sad he died when I was too young to know him.

His wife , my Nan was not a nice person and never showed any affection. None of her grandchildren have a good word to say about her.

My other grandparents had their own baby 6 weeks before I was born so never behaved like grandparents. They didn't even bother coming to my wedding. Can't remember a single hug from them to be honest.

I feel cheated out of grandparents even and am so happy my children have loving relationships with theirs.

bookworm14 · 08/03/2020 12:02

I am 38 and still have one grandparent left. However she is nearly 97 and very frail so I don’t know how much longer she will be with us.

eldeeno · 08/03/2020 12:02

I was lucky enough to have all 4 of my grandparents into adulthood.

My first died when I was at uni (aged 21) and my last grandparent died 20 years later when I was 41.

Ironically, it was the grandparent who was the most ill as a child (several heart attacks from when I was about 7) who lived the longest!

BackyardChickens · 08/03/2020 12:02

I was about 15

TheSmelliestHouse · 08/03/2020 12:03

Lost first one when I was 12. I treasure my grandma, she's 90, I'm 51
