Anyone got a magic trick for making broccoli taste good?

Anything to jazz it up? I normally just boil it for a bit and then force myself to eat it

Put cheese sauce over itSmile

Roast it with olive oil, salt and pepper (or chilli flakes if you like heat) in an oven at 180 degrees for about 15-30 minutes. I’ve never eaten broccoli boiled again.

Also delicious this way are Brussels sprouts and cauliflower.

Step away from the boil!

Chop it up then roast in the oven with salt/pepper/veg oxo cube and oil.
Even our most reluctant DC eats it like that.

Smother it in cheese sauce and bake till bubbly and brown.

Slice thinly and stir fry in butter with garlic, almonds and a big squeeze of lemon juice at the end.

Toss with olive oil, salt, smoked paprika and lemon zest and roast in a hot oven for 15-30 mins.

FruityWidow · 24/02/2020 13:33

Roast it with a sprinkle of parmesan

Puppybum · 24/02/2020 13:33

Garlic, soy sauce and sesame

inmyshedsmoking2000 · 24/02/2020 13:34

Garlic sliced thin, butter and fresh lemon juice, broccoli in a pan with a couple spoons of water and the above. Lid on, steam until al dente, salt and pepper to taste.

Lottieskeeper · 24/02/2020 13:35

Have you tried tenderstem broccoli? So tasty just steamed; even my veg dodging 4 year old loves it.

AmelieTaylor · 24/02/2020 13:37

Open mouth, insert broccoli, chew! Do not boil the life out if it!!

I eat it Roasted several times a week, steamed with cheese sauce or raw other days. Raw I dip it in a variety of dips

There’s rarely a day goes past when I don’t eat 🥦 🥦 The big fat stem is gorgeous thinly sliced and pan fried in olive oil 😋

Tonight I’m having it steamed in A St Agur (blue cheese) sauce.

Food of the Gods!

Shosha1 · 24/02/2020 13:41

Steam it then sprinkle with balsamic. Lovely

AmazingGreats · 24/02/2020 13:43

Steamed with herb butter on
Stir Fried
I cut it up small and add it to pasta dishes, omelettes, risottos
In a pie filling
In quiche
Baked in the oven with a little bit of oil
Raw as crudités with dip or in salad
Covered in cheese sauce
Covered in gravy.

Basically every way is lovely except boiled. Boiled it goes mushy and smells a bit grim and is just generally yuck. Broccoli is one of my favourite foods. But steamed it is no longer broccoli. It is just hot green mush.

Pumperthepumper · 24/02/2020 13:43

Roast it then splash it with soy sauce. Similarly with green beans, coat in oil then dry fry until blackened a bit. Excellent.

Lessstressedhemum · 24/02/2020 13:43

Sauteed in olive oil with salt, garlic and chilli flakes.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 24/02/2020 13:49

Steam it until it's al Dente. Delicious.

Never boil broccoli!

Bluesheep8 · 24/02/2020 13:51

Just buy tenderstem op.

Devlesko · 24/02/2020 13:53

Roast in the oven with cheese over the top.
Have you never seen Nanny McPhee Grin

BigSandyBalls2015 · 24/02/2020 13:53

Roast it, I’ll never boil broccoli or cauliflower again

ChanChanChan · 24/02/2020 13:54

How long do you boil it for? If boiling, no longer than 3 minutes max.

Butter & chilli flakes.
Rice wine & oyster sauce.
Roasted.

umberellaonesie · 24/02/2020 13:56

Loads of salt and pepper

Shockers · 24/02/2020 13:59

It’s sweet when it’s steamed- knob of butter and some pepper and it’s lovely!

cakeandchampagne · 24/02/2020 14:00

Have you tried fresh broccoli in a salad?

Cinammoncake · 24/02/2020 14:05

Wow so many responses. Brilliant, thanks all Flowers
Right, will try the roast version today then some of the others. I have had tender stem before and do prefer it, but currently just got the boring one Grin

Saute with olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and soy sauce. My DS puts soy sauce in everything he cooks - turns out it's amazing with broccoli!

Also second the cheese sauce - like cauliflower cheese but with broccoli.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 24/02/2020 14:24

Yesterday I tried a trick I'd read on a frugal tips MN thread. Not only did it work but it was delicious...

Every time you chop it keep the stalky bits you'd normally throw away, chopped up and in a bag in the freezer - I also have bunged ends of asparagus and bits of kale and other greens that don't get eaten. Once full boil with stock to make soup. Whack in a few dollops of creme fraiche and if you like it, some crumbled Stilton. And you have lovely Broccoli soup made from the bits I'd normally chuck. Grin

mushroom3 · 24/02/2020 14:38

cook it with stock powder rather than salt in the water and don't overcook!
