Anyone got a magic trick for making broccoli taste good?

Anything to jazz it up? I normally just boil it for a bit and then force myself to eat it

Just to add, and re-reading pp's........ I wouldn't add garlic. So indigestible and takes away the nice flavour of the roasted brocolli, just use olive oil and pepper.

I also say this as an Italian who hates the obsession with excess garlic, I blame Jamie Oliver.

My DD is a bit of a fanatic on certain foods .Broccoli is one of her faves (not mine however!) So divide my portion up between her DH and the dog ! .Like carrots though !

Sliced up into thinnish bits if normal type, otherwise use the long stem stuff, rub in olive oil and salt and griddle so they brown well - its the Maillard reaction (browning stuff, like with meat) that causes caramelisation and tastes fab.

I think roasting it brings out the bitterness. Ugh!

Buy tenderstem and steam it. This helped me learn to live it.

In restaurants I love it with chillies or garlic/soy.

jackparlabane · 24/02/2020 15:24

Don't let water near it!
I microwave it for 3 minutes and chuck it in a stir fry. Or just on the side with butter or with soy sauce.

msmith501 · 24/02/2020 15:25

Steaming it is so much nicer than boiling. Stop just before it goes soft. Delicious.

TheOrigBrave · 24/02/2020 15:26

Steam. If it starts to smell you've overdone it.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/02/2020 15:27

Roast it after drizzling with garlic oil (or lemon oil, or chilli oil)

TheOrigBrave · 24/02/2020 15:28

Tender stem is quite a bit more expensive than tough regular stem.

copperoliver · 24/02/2020 15:29

Cheese sauce. X

Roasting sounds such a faff!

I suppose it depends what you're eating it with, but boiling is surely fine to go with meat, pots & gravy for example?

What do you serve with it if roasted?

Ninkanink · 24/02/2020 16:30

We eat it lots of different ways as we both love broccoli. Steaming is much nicer than boiling, but I do boil from time to time (just keep it to a few minutes only!). Roasting really isn’t a faff at all - pop it into a dish or roasting tray, drizzle with oil and spices or herbs, and pop it into the oven. We eat it as part of meat and two veg, or with steak, or with fish, or with roast. We especially like it curried, so we often have it as a side to a curry dinner.

Ninkanink · 24/02/2020 16:31

Oh, forgot, often have it with chicken tray dinner, in which case it just goes into the tray with everything else.

floffel · 24/02/2020 16:34

Option 1 - eat raw
Option 2 - lightly roasted with olive oil
Option 3 - tempura it (that’s my favourite)

Dontsayyouloveme · 24/02/2020 16:38

Lemon 🍋 juice

Mother87 · 24/02/2020 23:35

Stir-fried with ginger/chilli & soya sauce & dried or fresh onions... or black bean or chicken marinade... add toasted almonds or cashews😋😋

Duckyneedsaclean · 24/02/2020 23:37

Loads of salt in the water.. L

Loopyloopy · 24/02/2020 23:42

Lightly steam or boil (it should still have some crunch) and lemon juice and salt.

LemonFrenzy · 24/02/2020 23:42

Steam in a one of those metal steamers that go over a pan which are cheaper than a stackable steamer and take up less room and easier to clean. Or roast it. Cut up into very small pieces and mix in with rice that way you're still getting the goodness but without the taste. Personally I love broccoli.

Some nutrients, like vitamin C and glucosinolates, are water soluble so you lose a lot of them when boiling or steaming. Microwaving/baking is actually much healthier.

Makegoodchoices · 24/02/2020 23:46

I’ve never liked broccoli but this is delicious.

Have it raw in this salad:

I really love tenderstem broccoli, lovely and sweet. Some great ideas here, never thought to roast it, will give it a goSmile

FourFlapjacksPlease · 25/02/2020 00:30

I mix honey and soy with a bit of oil and stir fry broccoli in it. It is so delicious. My teenagers were arguing over the last bit of broccoli tonight, which says it all!

thesunwillout · 25/02/2020 00:35

Bite size bits, into a pyrex round dish, splash of boiled water, lid on.
2 mins full power.
Perfectly fresh still.

Nat6999 · 25/02/2020 00:39

Steam it, I have a microwave steamer that has room for 2 generous portions, a favourite here is steamed tender stem Broccoli, Asparagus, cauliflower cheese & a big fillet steak rubbed with salt, pepper & Garlic granules & grilled until medium rare.
