Anyone got a magic trick for making broccoli taste good?

Anything to jazz it up? I normally just boil it for a bit and then force myself to eat it

Those of you who roast it, how much oil do you add?

Do you chop the pieces up small?

thehorseandhisboy · 24/02/2020 14:45

Lightly steamed broccoli in a salad works well.

Also interested in the roasting tips - how much oil, what size pieces, what temp and how long for pretty please if anyone has time!

Braggs liquid aminos (yummier than soy) and butter.

Tahini sauce - tahini, lemon, crushed garlic, salt, olive oil or water stirred together. If you like it, it makes all greens more delicious drizzled on the top.

Ninkanink · 24/02/2020 14:54

Roasted. Either with olive oil, lemon, garlic powder and chilli flakes, or if accompanying a curry, with Garam masala, lemon juice and oil.

Stir fried with an Asian style sauce (fish sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, fresh chilli).

Steamed and served dripping with butter, generously seasoned with salt and pepper.

Steamed with cauliflower, then sautéed very gently with butter and garlic.

Butter and soy sauce after steaming it.

The best thing about roasted broccoli is that it’s actually even better if you use frozen. - cheaper, and so convenient! I always have a bag of cauliflower and broccoli florets in the freezer.

virginpinkmartini · 24/02/2020 14:58

Another vote for roasted. The way I do it is by washing the florets, drying with a paper towel and then tossing in oil, easy garlic, salt and pepper. Roast for 20 mins (just blackened tips are what you want.) In the last 5 mins of cooking, crumble parmesan all over them. It's sooo good!

dayswithaY · 24/02/2020 14:58

Just cover it in gravy.

snappycamper · 24/02/2020 14:59

It's lovely roasted with a bit of curry power scattered on and oil sprayed over the top

isseywith4vampirecats · 24/02/2020 15:00

add to cauliflower cheese
add stilton and make it into broccoli and stilton soup

BangingOn · 24/02/2020 15:03

Definitely roasted with garlic and chilli, or stir fried with sesame oil and soy sauce.

mindproject · 24/02/2020 15:05

Broccoli is the best vegetable, we eat it most days. I like it best in stir fries with plenty of garlic.

speakout · 24/02/2020 15:05

Stir fried with garlic and soy sauce.

PanamaPattie · 24/02/2020 15:07

I stir fry mine with a trifecta of deliciousness- garlic, chilli and ginger.

fedup21 · 24/02/2020 15:08

Can anyone recommend me a steamer?!

Ninkanink · 24/02/2020 15:08

We also do a great cheese gratin dish with whatever veg is to hand, from time to time. Mmmmmm I’m hungry now.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 24/02/2020 15:08

Stir fry it with garlic and a little oil.

Honestly I think boiling is the worst way to cook most vegetables, especially if you overcook them as many people do. My MIL (who I love dearly!) probably thinks I hate broccoli and carrots as I eat the smallest amount that is politely possible at her house. I love them, just not when they’re done following the ‘boil them until the colour is gone’ school of cookery!

Millie2013 · 24/02/2020 15:11

FIL roasts it, covered in 5 spice powder (I think). It’s loveky.
I’m not a fan of it boiled, but do like it raw, or stir fried, so it still has “bite”

speakout · 24/02/2020 15:13

You don't need a steamer.

You can put food in a metal colander over a pan of simmering water and cover with a lid.

If I stir fry broccoli then I quickly stir frim in a frying pan with a little oil, then add a few tablespoons of water and cover everything quickly with a big pot lid. broccoli is al dente in a couple of minutes and residual water evaporates.

Ninkanink · 24/02/2020 15:14

Yeah we don’t use a steamer - we have a little metal steaming basket that fits into a variety of pans.

Baaaahhhhh · 24/02/2020 15:15

Boiling is fine, just don't boil the shit out of it!

Alternatively I roast mine with Olive Oil too - usually with other veg, like asparagus or tomatoes. Even brocolli hating DH eats it like that.

Stumpedasatree · 24/02/2020 15:18

Cooking it in too much boiling water kills broccoli and renders it inedible. Same applies to most veg really.

All of the other suggestions are great.

Pollyputthepizzaon · 24/02/2020 15:18

Oh my goodness roast it definitely. Delicious! Cut it up and put it in a mixing bowl. Add a tablespoon of oil and salt and pepper. Mix well. Spread on baking tray and roast for about 20-30 mins.

Same with kale. So tasty.

That’s what I meant. I don’t necessarily mean an electric one. I was wondering what product people used to steam stuff in-are there any Amazon recommendations?
