Performances that have ruined films/tv shows

I'm watching Pride and Prejudice (the BBC version not the Keira Knightley version). P&P is my favourite book and I've watched the show loads but I almost have to fast forward the bits with Alison Steadman (Mrs Bennet). Yes, she's meant to be a bit ridiculous and dramatic but she plays her like an overly- shrill screeching pantomime dame. Ruins the show. Brenda Blethyn did a much better job.

Dolly , I agree too and I also didn't think he was as good looking enough , more a characterture ( sorry about spelling!)

Everyone who has a singing part in the film of Les Mis.

Andrew Scott's Hamlet didn't quite ruin the play for me but I thought he was too camp and chirpy for the part. Claudius was also nowhere near sinister and menacing enough.

This whole thread is an indictment of big-name culture and nepotism in the film industry.

In Price and Prejudice, the Keira Knightly one, the actor who played George Wickham (Rupert Friend) walked around really woodenly with short steps like he was trying not to shit his pants.

Keira Knightly herself would be a candidate too. In everything.

It's like the director forgot to bring any wide screen lenses and told them all to walk in tiny prissy steps to stay in shot. Unfortunately they came across more as clockwork toys than zone-focused actors.

I also agree re Rami Malik. I think he was cast as he physically resembles Freddie Mercury.

@OvaltinaTurner 😂😂😂

Gwynneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love. She's undeniably attractive, but that golden Californian glow is so out of place. But Joseph Fiennes, oh my, so beautiful.

Franticbutterfly · 10/02/2020 17:07

100% RDJ in Dr Doolittle. Rubbish Welsh accent and over acting. It ruined it.

vampirethriller · 10/02/2020 17:22

Eddie Redmayne, Pillars of the Earth. He never shuts his mouth and it makes him look gormless.
Everybody in Call the Midwife. So much simpering. So many pursed lips.

AutumnCrow · 10/02/2020 17:43

I normally don't mind a bit of Bradders on the telly but he's awful on Doctor Who, but I suspect it's to do with the direction and script and co-actors. I imagine if Bradley Walsh was allowed to have some input it'd be less flat.

For a programme about travel in four dimensions, it's impressive Doctor Who has only mastered two-dimensional acting, running the directorial gamut of A to A ie a fixed point in space and time.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/02/2020 18:20

They're all awful on this series of Dr Who.

nonsensicalmess · 10/02/2020 18:32

Kiera Knightly in most things she's done.

Brad Pitt in the episode of Friends. I've always thought that was some of the worst acting I've ever seen!

AutumnCrow · 10/02/2020 19:07

Derek Thompson as Charlie Fairhead in every episode of Casualty he was ever in, which is pretty much all of them for over three decades and counting.

His acting skills comprise:

Saying his lines (passes as 'professionalism')
Looking sideways with an eye roll (which he thinks denotes 'irony')
Cat's Bum Face (most other emotions)
Tragic Smile (has to pretend to care about another actor's storyline given he's on £350-400k a year)

Andy Macdowell did actually spoil FWAAF. I think that’s a given.
Some of the others mentioned are just bad actors or in the wrong films ( Nicolas Cage shouldn’t do mainstream films, Gwenth is good in Talented Mr Ripley as a girl from wealth: having a lovely time swanning round do bugger all, funnily that...)

K.Knightly is offputting because if her weird/ teeth jaw thing.

I always think Alex Guiness doesn’t fit with Star Wars. Doesn’t ruin the film but it always jars it for me.

Qwerty543 · 10/02/2020 22:39

Johnny Depp in anything. Cannot stand him.

Yes to David Tennant in HP, ruined that part, as did Trigger playing Barty Crouch. Michael Gambon was awful. Sir Ian McKellan would have been perfect. Seamus was wooden as hell, as were the Weasley twins. Bonnie Wright was dreadful. I didn't like Ralph Finnes portrayal of Voldemort either. Helena Bonham Carter ruined Bellatix. She is much more coldly evil in the books, not just nuts and overacting.

Rebel Wilson in anything, her acting is dire and so is her singing

Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who. I've watched them since Jon Pertwee (70s) and she's completely ruined it. It's not the fact she's a woman doctor - it's the fact she's so wooden, artificial and patronising.

This, so many times over. Totally ruined it for me. I gave up early on and who the FUCK chose that appalling outfit? Wardrobe should be sacked.

Why is it most British kids can’t seem to act?

Daisy whatsherface as Rey in Star Wars, improved bar drippy wardrobe thing (very impractical, particularly on wrecked Death Star most recently) but the first one omg, ‘blarst’ doors on the Falcon, wtaf? Straight outta British generic acting school luvvie darling. Ick.

Squigean · 10/02/2020 23:19

Can't tolerate Tom Cruise haven't watch anything he's in since Mission Impossible. I can't help thinking he believes himself to be a big hero action man, which is why he saw no irony in casting himself as Jack Reacher.

In fact my dislike of him is so strong I have read a Jack Reacher since Tom Cruise thought he could be him!

ginghambox · 11/02/2020 00:22

Pretty much anything idris elba is in .

stormciarathegale · 11/02/2020 00:35

Aiden Gillen. In absolutely everything he's in. We groan when we see him. He's a dose

He comes across in interviews as an absolute tosser, too.

Patroclus · 11/02/2020 15:06

ohhhh yes Ive said it on here before but Hamdrew Scott is pure Derek Jacobi in Frasier acting.

Noflora · 11/02/2020 15:21

I've totally stopped watching Silent Witness because of Emilia Fox, dear god her over-emoting about EVerything is tedious.

AlanRickmanFanClub · 11/02/2020 15:32

Emma Thompson - she plays herself in everything.

Don't like Kate Winslet much in anything,
