Performances that have ruined films/tv shows

I'm watching Pride and Prejudice (the BBC version not the Keira Knightley version). P&P is my favourite book and I've watched the show loads but I almost have to fast forward the bits with Alison Steadman (Mrs Bennet). Yes, she's meant to be a bit ridiculous and dramatic but she plays her like an overly- shrill screeching pantomime dame. Ruins the show. Brenda Blethyn did a much better job.

Have to agree about Russell Crowe in Les Miserables.

Keira Knightly is good in The Imitation Game, but not in anything else I have ever seen her in.

The whole cast in the one episode of Mrs Brown's Boys I saw.

Patroclus · 10/02/2020 08:36

Clare Dane was meant to be Rose in Titanic

Patroclus · 10/02/2020 08:39

A famous one is Ford Coppola's daughter in Godfather 3. I didnt think she was actually bad at all, although the film was.

Im pretty sure Keanu Reeves is half English as well. So no excuse for that accent but I wont hear a bad word against Winona

Standrewsschool · 10/02/2020 08:46

My first thought was to say Andy McDowell in Four Weddings also, and people have already mentioned her

lynsey91 · 10/02/2020 08:58

I agree about Jodie Whitaker. She has ruined Dr Who for me and DH. She was terrible in Broadchurch too

TheMemoryLingers · 10/02/2020 08:58

Surprised at the hate for Nicolas Cage (but then, I do fancy him like mad!).

Have people missed that Con Air is supposed to be funny? DH and I always recite the best lines when we watch it, like 'put the bunny back in the box' Grin.

Anyway, back on topic, I hated Nicole Kidman in 'Eyes Wide Shut'. Why did she have to drawl and sigh throughout the entire performance? She acted the whole part as though she'd just got out of bed with a bad hangover.

Tana433 · 10/02/2020 09:32

Shaun Evans as Endeavour Morse. John Thaw was and is Morse for me and i just cant imagine that that this charismatic, formidable man was ever the wet, mousey timid little character that Shaun Evans portrays. Nothing against the actor but he totally ruins it for me im afraid.

SinkGirl · 10/02/2020 09:40

Hate to say it but Anthony Hopkins is someone I can’t stand to watch.

His Hannibal Lector is particularly weak. Plus his accent changes three times per sentence and nobody else seems to notice this but it drives me mad. Mads was an amazing Hannibal though.

AndaLuciAnn · 10/02/2020 09:43

Another vote for all the kids in Harry Potter and for Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson ever since.

Another vote for Jodie Whittaker and everyone else in the last and current Dr Who. Between the dreadful script and dreadful acting my childhood favourite show has been trashed.

Hugh Laurie and any other actor attempting an American accent. The ones on Radio 4 dramas are without exception horrific. Same goes for any British actor attempting any accent other than their own. Cringingly terrible.

Every British child actor. Why can American kids act convincingly and ours just can’t. They’re so stilted and wooden. I’m just trying to imagined a British cast in Stranger Things. Would have ruined it.

Has anyone else said Claire Danes in homeland/everything I've ever seen her in? I am sure that she is a nice person, but her acting consists of looking a bit puzzled and then doing a little secret smile to herself. That's all she does.... all the time.

And while I'm here, Trevor Eve in waking the dead. In every scene, he starts shouting. Always.

Tana433 · 10/02/2020 09:54

Hilary Swank in P.S I Love You is another one ive remembered. Not particularly her fault but i read and really enjoyed the book and she was just nothing like the character i had pictured in my head at all.

cidersupernova · 10/02/2020 09:56

All of the young cast in Harry Potter

cidersupernova · 10/02/2020 09:57

PS I love you was changed completely from the book though wasn’t it? It was moved from Ireland to New York and so much other stuff changed that it was more ‘loosely based’ on the book really

WellTidy · 10/02/2020 10:04

Tori Spelling as Donna in Beverly Hills 90210. Loved the show as a teenager, but thought Donna was really badly acted. And then I learnt that she was the producer's daughter. It doesn't half stand out.

Tana433 · 10/02/2020 10:05

@cider. Thats true and i still enjoyed the film. I always think the book is far better than the film version anyway. Only adaptation i really found brilliant was Barbara Taylor Bradford's Woman Of Substance. I have the mini-series on DVD and it is still my go to if i want a day cuddled up on the sofa with the wine and chocs!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/02/2020 12:05

Have to disagree with OP re Alison Steadman. I’ve read P and P many times and still love the AS Mrs Bennett. I’m just so sorry the Beeb version didn’t include her final monologue, after she heard that Lizzie was going to marry Mr D.
So, after Mrs B had finally recovered what wits she possessed, we have this gem (IMO) from the immortal Jane....

‘Good gracious! Lord bless me! only think! dear me! Mr Darcy! Who would have thought it! And is it really true? Oh! my sweetest Lizzy! how rich and how great you will be! What pin-money, what jewels, what carriages you will have! Jane’s is nothing to it - nothing at all. I am so pleased - so happy. Such a charming man! - so handsome! so tall! - Oh, my dear Lizzy! pray apologise for my having disliked him so much before. I hope he will overlook it. Dear, dear Lizzy. A house in town! Every thing that is charming! Three daughters married! Ten thousand a year! Oh, Lord! What will become of me. I shall go distracted.’

Hidingtonothing · 10/02/2020 12:19

I suspect I'm going to be in a minority of one here but I finally got round to watching Bohemian Rhapsody last night and was distinctly underwhelmed by Rami Malik. Not sure what I expected tbf and he probably did as well as anyone could with that particular role but I can't say I wasn't disappointed.

iklboo · 10/02/2020 12:31

Aiden Gillen. In absolutely everything he's in. We groan when we see him. He's a dose

Oh he of the wandering accent. It changes about seventy billion times in GOT. DH worked with him on Queer As Folk. He has nothing good to say about him.

Jim Carrey was immense in Man On The Moon.

If you want to watch a really bad Nic Cage film check out 'Mandy'.

ncfornow89 · 10/02/2020 12:38

Maybe unpopular but Helena bonham carter and to a slightly lesser extent Olivia Colman in the crown season 3. The actors in the first 2 seasons created such rich portrayals and season 3 main cast felt incredibly lazy and particularly in the case of HBC bordered on pastiche.

LikeDuhWhatever · 10/02/2020 12:58

The one-faced ones:
Kirsten Dunst in anything. She has one face.
Kristen Stewart in anything. Awful acting, also has one face only.
Wynona Ryder is just not a good actress either, and has only one face.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/02/2020 13:44

I’m just trying to imagined a British cast in Stranger Things. Would have ruined it

Millie Bobbie Brown (Eleven) is British. Talks like Emma Watson in real life. The older brother is British too.

AndaLuciAnn · 10/02/2020 13:49

whatsnewpussyhat I’d completely forgotten Millie Bobbie Brown is British! 😊

Lionso · 10/02/2020 13:57

Yvonnne Strahovski in Dexter. Dear lord soon as her character appeared Dexter went massively downhill. Such a talented cast of actors in that show until that point. The writing generally was poor for the last 2 seasons but her wooden performance was dire. It really stood out against the rest of the cast and not in a good way.

DollyDaydream70 · 10/02/2020 14:49

@Hidingtonothing I agree about Rami Malik in Bohemian Rhapsody. I had built the performance up so much in my mind, due to everyone else gushing about it. Unfortunately I was distinctly underwhelmed and didn't even watch the whole movie. I found the portrayal of Freddie unsympathetic and lacking charisma.
