Missing my youth and 00's nostalgia

InTheTempest · 02/02/2020 22:37

I'm nearly 32. I know it's still young but I'm also meant to be a responsible adult (kind of). Time really does just disappear, I never thought much about this before- it was something 'old people' used to say 😂

I've had a really bad couple of years with difficult things to deal with and a coping mechanism has been to regress to 18 yr old me 😂 I mean I literally feel no different (who does?!) but I'm really really missing my teens and reminiscing a lot. Very nostalgic for the 00s right now and wondered what everyone else's memories were. I had varied taste in all things and remember...

My team being Invincibles and also winning the double (they're piss poor now)

Britney at the top of her game, wanting to basically be her!

The fashion- bootcut/flares almost indecently low rise. Boho style and Sienna Miller. Kate Moss (buying all of her Topshop collection). Tiny handbags! Massively overswept side fringes. Belly button piercings.

Loving all the indie bands, the Libertines, Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, Razorlight. Having massive crushes on Alex Turner and Luke Pritchard.

Kate Moss and Pete Doherty- and bumping into them in the pub.

Gavin and Stacey and the Inbetweeners.

And all my hazy memories of drunken nights out with friends and messing around in sixth form.

What else does everyone remember from that time?

God I loved the fashion of that era:

Backless tops (even better if they were chain mail), lowest possible rise boot cut trousers with pointy boots, one shoulder tops, combat trousers, satin camisole tops, Lancome Juicy Tubes lip gloss, stripy highlights.... Ah the memories!

beckywiththeshithair20 · 02/02/2020 22:48

I was a massive fan of the indie bands you mention. The late nineties and 00's indie music scene was pretty iconic for me. I genuinely don't think they make it like that now...another thing 'old people' say.

I was a student then too. Memories of trudging around charity shops and vintage stores trying to find trendy stuff for a quid or less. Dressing like an emo and having a massive fringe. The OC on telly. Good times.

InTheTempest · 02/02/2020 22:54

I love all that fashion. Every 00s trend going, I copied it. Slave to fashion at that age.

And they definitely don't make them like that anymore. I remember buying Whatever People Say I am That's What I'm Not the day it was released and being so excited!

Oh god yes the OC! Sunday's were for laying in bed watching T4 and recovering from Saturday's excesses. I was so jealous of Alexa Chung, for so many reasons 😂

Sorry slightly off topic but I get the nostalgia thing completely. I'm twice your age and I often think of the good old days! I did like the boot cut trousers when they were all the rage, but finally adapted to skinnies.

InTheTempest · 02/02/2020 23:05

@EngagedAgain I think everyone is nostalgic for their youth aren't they! You're similar age to my mum and I know she loved Bob Marley, T-Rex, Blondie. It took me ages to get out of the low rise bootcut Britney jeans but now you'd have to prize high waisted skinnies off my cold dead body before I went back to hipsters and muffin tops 😂

OP posts:
EngagedAgain · 02/02/2020 23:20

Yes, funny as I like high waisted now. Mid to late 70's music was fab. I do reminisce about various times though, not just those of my youth. I quite liked the baggy jean look which I think was late 80's judging by the old top of the pops I watch. I will check in again tomorrow sometime, sleep beckons 🙂

f00k · 02/02/2020 23:21

I'm the same age as you OP and I often feel this way. I love listening to early 00s music. R&B and UK Garage. In 2002 I suddenly became a "grunger" and rock has dominated my music tastes ever since. In 2006/7 I had the sweepy emo fringe and side lip piercing and hung out at sweaty gigs in tiny pubs and lived on vodka Redbull. It was the best time.

Going back to 2003/4, hanging out in town after school. Trying on clothes in Bay Trading and Pilot. Buying roll-on body glitter and millions of butterfly clips from Claires. Wearing slouch boots or ballet flats to school. I miss my youth!

InTheTempest · 02/02/2020 23:37

Vodka redbull! I'd vomit if I had just a sip of it now! 🤮😂 I loved it though. Along with WKD blue and Smirnoff ice.

Watching every series of Pop Idol/X Factor.

The Osbournes on MTV!

Greenday- American Idiot oh how appropriate that song continues to be

A pack of 10 l&b costing a couple of quid and 20 for under a fiver

Amy Winehouse, loved her so much.

Footballers Wives 😂

Horrible FCUK t shirts with innuendoes all over them (I owned one)- they'd never sell today.

Flip phones and polyphonic ringtones 😂

OP posts:
f00k · 02/02/2020 23:57

Same. Just the smell of Redbull now makes me queasy. Yes, Smirnoff Ice! First alcoholic drink I was allowed at 15. Little did my mum know I was already getting pissed on Glen's vodka most weekends.

The Osborne's was family viewing in our house. Loved early reality TV. Loved watching Big Brother on the live feed on E4 during the summer hols.

Straight on MSN messenger after school.

squeekums · 03/02/2020 00:02

www.faceoff.com.au and yes they ship international lol
The fashion was so much better then

the dance music was SO much better
Red eye and red bull. Now im a V girl

squeekums · 03/02/2020 00:04

lemon ruskies, dont know if the UK had them but they were so nice over summer as a teen in the 00's getting drunk on the beach

InTheTempest · 03/02/2020 00:13

I used to watch the livestream of big brother too, drove my parents up the wall! 😂

The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie

Frying my hair with straighteners on a daily basis

I used to watch the music channels for hours upon hours, music videos were so much better then.

Eminem!

Velour tracksuits

Skechers (had to have them because Britney advertised them)

Tiered mini skirts

Cowboy boots

Buffy (I know this started in the 90s but was still huge)

The end of Friends!

Bridget Jones diary (went to the cinema to watch it with my friends)

BobLobLawLLB · 03/02/2020 00:26

I had an awful Naf Naf fleece coat and a Benetton bag. I used to come home after school and watch Neighbours then My So Called Life or Fresh Prince. Going into town on a Saturday with only about £5. Could only just afford some Heather Shimmer lipstick. Sigh.

anon2000000000 · 03/02/2020 00:30

Ah I was a teen in the 00s (I'm close to your age op) and I miss the mad fashion. Party dresses from Jane Norman, hoi polloi, kookai, my roll on glitter, a bargain top or jeans from internationale, my very small hand bag from Jane norman, my flip phone, the BEST music ever across all the genres and good old maybelline make up. I can't forget my rainbow room straighteners.

Roodledoodlenoodle · 03/02/2020 00:37

I loved all the alcopops- blue WKD especially and those VK ones they did in tropical and other random flavours that would always be £1 on a Thursday night out.

I loved 00’s fashion as well, somehow felt ‘easier’ to be on-trend then.

squeekums · 03/02/2020 01:36

Im still a sucker for a good alchopop
They just taste so good lol

celebratingrita · 03/02/2020 01:45

I love to hear what people remember from their youth. Mine was the 90s. Although:

Massively overswept side fringes.

I still have one of these Grin

BohoBunney · 03/02/2020 01:56

Oh the memories!

My emo phase started in early 00s when MCR came out I think. Processed back combed to buggary hair with “raccoon” extensions and enough liquid eyeliner to drown my emotions.
I did once see one of my emo MySpace selfies used in a meme about emos and I was both mortified and buzzing at the same time!

MySpace was life.

Doyouwantanothercuppa · 03/02/2020 02:09

When the Big Brother live stream used to cut the sound from their microphones and instead focus on a bird, or a plane coming in to land.
Watching Lost.
Snow Patrol. Kooks. Arctic Monkeys
Going to the cinema for £3.25 and then getting a kids portion of Pizza Hut buffet afterwards.
Trying to juggle being on MSN and playing the Sims Unleashed.
Those were the days!! I’ve recently started asking Alexa to play Noughties indie music.

DippyAvocado · 03/02/2020 02:17

Give it a few years and you'll be able to wear all the fashions again Grin. I am ten years older than you and can now buy pretty much identical clothes to the ones I wore in 1995!

I remember feeling similarly to you in my early 30s. There seems to be a lot of expectation that you will have "settled down" by then and I remember feeling like I wasn't "young" any more (even though I was). Weirdly, in my 40s I feel a lot more comfortable about getting older.

Verily1 · 03/02/2020 02:27

I loved the dance music then and the cheap alcohol!

No slut shaming for wearing mini skirts

Loved the boho look- uggs and jeans and gypsy tops

Faux fur gilets

Neat eyebrows

Barely there make up that took 2 mins to apply and go

The arrival of frizz ease!

When student fees were £1k pa

When you could have a min wage job and buy a starter flat and go on holiday for £300. And not pay extra for luggage and could put liquid in your handbag!

Osquito · 03/02/2020 02:33

Backless chainmail handkerchief tops are back! The Naked Tiger (brand) had some in recently.

Can’t listen to Linkin Park or Ashanti, the nostalgia waves are just too strong, and the other week I tried reminiscing about Myspace to another parent (who is about 32, like me) and she just gave me a blank look. Blush

InTheTempest · 03/02/2020 09:18

@DippyAvocado see I settled down and had kids, and then split up at 30. I do feel a little bit lost in my early 30s but I actually am enjoying acting like a teen again (when I'm not on parenting duty 😂) mind you, my kids have excellent music taste.

Oh neat eyebrows, I destroyed mine as a teen 😂 they recovered enough to look ok now. Mind you I don't get the slug eyebrows that teenagers today have? Weird!

All I've been listening to lately is 00s indie, I've had Jackie Big Tits playing in my head on loop for days

OP posts:
Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/02/2020 09:29

I'm 29. Was a 00s teen.

Going to discos wearing low waisted skirts and halter tops.

Arctic Monkeys!

Dream matte mousse foundation.

MSN after school, watching Big Brother and Footballers Wives.
