Missing my youth and 00's nostalgia

I'm nearly 32. I know it's still young but I'm also meant to be a responsible adult (kind of). Time really does just disappear, I never thought much about this before- it was something 'old people' used to say 😂

I've had a really bad couple of years with difficult things to deal with and a coping mechanism has been to regress to 18 yr old me 😂 I mean I literally feel no different (who does?!) but I'm really really missing my teens and reminiscing a lot. Very nostalgic for the 00s right now and wondered what everyone else's memories were. I had varied taste in all things and remember...

My team being Invincibles and also winning the double (they're piss poor now)

Britney at the top of her game, wanting to basically be her!

The fashion- bootcut/flares almost indecently low rise. Boho style and Sienna Miller. Kate Moss (buying all of her Topshop collection). Tiny handbags! Massively overswept side fringes. Belly button piercings.

Loving all the indie bands, the Libertines, Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, Razorlight. Having massive crushes on Alex Turner and Luke Pritchard.

Kate Moss and Pete Doherty- and bumping into them in the pub.

Gavin and Stacey and the Inbetweeners.

And all my hazy memories of drunken nights out with friends and messing around in sixth form.

What else does everyone remember from that time?

Oh god I remember when everyone had those long tiered gypsy skirts teamed with one of those leather belts made out of circles 😂 you would literally see women everywhere wearing them in brown, black or white combinations.

I miss the excitement when a Now cd came out and buying singles of your favourite artists before the album came out . Really miss the time from winter 98 to summer 99 don’t know why but think that was the happiest I was as a teenager before all the hormones and angst kicked in . Loved the music and fashions and going out clubbing 2003 -05 . I feel things like jackets and jeans etc were so much more comfier and practical back then and although had mobile phones we weren’t ruled by them the way it feels like now .

lorettalemon · 04/02/2020 20:14

This is making me feel tearful with nostalgia!

iswhois · 04/02/2020 20:24

MSN!

The music, especially indie music

PlayStation 2

Topshop (it's shite now)

Only having 3 make-up items and that being enough

Also reminds me of going to town everyday after school and drinking lambrini

iswhois · 04/02/2020 20:26

I also like a lot of the interiors- everything was red and cream

InTheTempest · 04/02/2020 21:43

Bo Selecta! I loved it 😂

Urgh I was so happy when my mum finally let me have a pair of those jeans/skirt things from the teen section at new look. I accessorised them with sheer shirts and chokers which were like bangles only they went around the neck, with diamantés on, and massive hair clips of course (but with two strands of hair pulled out at the front). Blue hair mascara and a dab of glitter gel along cheekbones cheekbones. Pedal pushers as well! I had 'bang on the door' bedding and body cream 😂

Sagradafamiliar · 05/02/2020 23:41

This is when I was younger, about 12-13 btw just to clarify haha!

IfNot · 05/02/2020 23:49

I feel like a lot of the fashion mentioned was 90s though, no? I remember buying some skinny jeans in 2002/3. I still had some flares in the mid 00's but I'd been wearing them since the mid 90s.
I do remember things like scarf tops in the early 00's, and the Rock chick look. Those sequin motif tops were everywhere.
Also lots of Chinese style embroidery on dresses, Diane Von furstenburg wrap dresses, fake Gucci/Halston slinky drape neck clubbing dresses, fake fur coats, massive gold hoop earrings and diamonte studded nails...(I was in my 20s)Grin

I've always been the photographer of the group and so I'm using my own personal archive as a reference here.

From what I can see skinny jeans were definitely a 2006ish thing onwards from a fashion point of view. You would have been able to buy them earlier than that but looking back at my photos from that era no one was really wearing proper skinny jeans in the early 2000s until then.

Jeans 2000-2006 were mostly bootcut, flared, very flared and 'skater'. Cargo trousers (I'm sure they had another name at the time) and vest tops also seemed popular in the early 2000s.

Hair styles are very dating too. Lots of short Victoria Beckham type crops in the late 90s moving through to lots of layers and sweeping fringes in the early 2000s.

I became a Goth in 2002 (still am to this day.)
For me it was an obsession with bracelets made out of gemstone chips and tiny glass beads. I'd wear loads of them. Ditto shag bands. I'd wear lots of necklaces and rings too. Bright pink eyeshadow, lipstick and nail polish were some of my favourite things, along with really heavy eyeliner. I'd draw it on like an Ancient Egyptian. Grin
I remember the hunt for black lipstick, and being too scared to go into the Goth shop in Oxford, so I bought Barry M black from Superdrug instead. That same day I had the same dilemma when I wanted to buy 'Fallen' by Evanescence, I was too scared to go into either HMV or Virgin so got it in WHSmith instead.
I was obsessed with Evanescence and Amy Lee (that hasn't changed either) and wanted to dress like her so much. It hasn't been until fairly recently I've been able to afford those kind of clothes. I bought my first pair of combat boots a few years ago and was so happy!
I too loved gypsy tops and gypsy skirts. I had ones I wore to death. (I still own some I've found in charity shops.)
Reading the first four Harry Potter books when I was 13 then waiting for the new ones to come out. Rushing to the school library to get my hands on Order of the Phoenix and not putting it down all day (by reading under the table in lessons.) I read that book in 24 hours!
Me and my friends used to hang out in the school library, we were all the misfits. Smile
I haven't worn jeans for years, I refuse to go near skinny jeans.

EngagedAgain · 06/02/2020 14:10

It's taken years but I've grown to quite like skinny jeans. The biggest problem was getting ones that fit properly for ones shape, and that don't bag at the knees. Finding the right ones is key. I hate trying things on but had to go through about 30 pairs to get the right ones. The biggest practical benefit is they don't get all wet and muddy at the bottom (a boon in our weather this winter). Sorry, this post sounds like it's meant for style and beauty. So, as far as nostalgia is concerned maybe it's the being carefree we miss, the not having any real responsibility.

NathanNathan · 07/02/2020 01:15

Combat trousers! Cargo trousers were called combat trousers.

FromEden · 07/02/2020 03:25

Haha you just reminded me of those. Sometimes they had like buckle bits hanging them. wtf was that all about

Sniv · 07/02/2020 04:31

I had a black Korn hoodie, a lip piercing and used to watch so much MTV2 that Zane Lowe felt like a guest in our house.

My friends and I watched heaps of anime and spent all our money on the 3 for £15 manga deal at Forbidden Planet

Casino218 · 07/02/2020 06:20

Working my butt off and having my second child. I'm 53! Think yourself lucky!

bellinisurge · 07/02/2020 06:39

So that's what you crazy kids were doing.😂
I was being a grown up and nostalgic for my teens in the late 70s early 80s. You don't know you're born 😂😂😂😂😂😂
