Missing my youth and 00's nostalgia

I'm nearly 32. I know it's still young but I'm also meant to be a responsible adult (kind of). Time really does just disappear, I never thought much about this before- it was something 'old people' used to say 😂

I've had a really bad couple of years with difficult things to deal with and a coping mechanism has been to regress to 18 yr old me 😂 I mean I literally feel no different (who does?!) but I'm really really missing my teens and reminiscing a lot. Very nostalgic for the 00s right now and wondered what everyone else's memories were. I had varied taste in all things and remember...

My team being Invincibles and also winning the double (they're piss poor now)

Britney at the top of her game, wanting to basically be her!

The fashion- bootcut/flares almost indecently low rise. Boho style and Sienna Miller. Kate Moss (buying all of her Topshop collection). Tiny handbags! Massively overswept side fringes. Belly button piercings.

Loving all the indie bands, the Libertines, Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, Razorlight. Having massive crushes on Alex Turner and Luke Pritchard.

Kate Moss and Pete Doherty- and bumping into them in the pub.

Gavin and Stacey and the Inbetweeners.

And all my hazy memories of drunken nights out with friends and messing around in sixth form.

What else does everyone remember from that time?

Also the TV show Bad Girls about the prison!

InTheTempest · 03/02/2020 09:43

Oh yes Bad Girls!

This was my going out outfit pretty much every time- sparkly top, Britney jeans with a flashy belt, high pointy heels. Permanently straightened hair- look at the eyebrows too!

Ahhh MSN Grin

I'm the same age and also been feeling quite nostalgic. Not for high school as that was hell, but definitely 6th form years where I found a bit of confidence. Chelsea Dagger was our 6th form anthem and I can't hear it without feeling all fuzzy and yearning for that time!

Toddlerteaplease · 03/02/2020 10:10

I wish bootcut jeans would come back into fashion, they suited me much better than straight leg!

InTheTempest · 03/02/2020 10:17

See I love skinnies now- bootcuts used to drag on the floor if I was wearing trainers, so they'd look crap really quickly.

I miss so much of the fashion though. It just felt more fun.

OP, that's not you in the picture is it? If so you look very much like Cheryl Cole to me. Yy to bad girls it was brilliant. It was like a newer version of cell block H, which would seem archaic now! Don't suppose any of you remember that? I in a way do miss the old mobiles. I got my first in about 2000. It was a very small Nokia. Then I had a sliding Samsung. Actually only got a smartphone a couple of years ago. Think it was the size of the older phones that I miss.

EngagedAgain · 03/02/2020 13:21

Oh and the first couple of big brother were good, also I'm a celebrity was too the first few times.

InTheTempest · 03/02/2020 13:28

@EngagedAgain I was using Cheryl as an example of my going out outfits- if only I looked like her! Definitely not me 😂

I loved Big Brother, remember watching it religiously the year Jade Goody was on it

I'm 33 and feel exactly the same. Lived on blue WKD and smirnoff ice.

I also used to wear those horrible FCUK tshirts with hipster jeans and thong proudly poking out (from La Senza, obv). I bought all my clothes in Morgan and Jane Norman and I stunk of Impulse Vanilla Kisses to disguise the smell of marlboro lights from my parents

I then progressed to full blown Indie Cindy wearing band tshirts, denim mini skirts with footless tights with lacy bits round the bottom worn with either Dunlop Green Flash for day or ballet flats for nights out in grimy clubs. I had the obligatory Toni and Guy mullet cut.

Could go for a night out including chippy and taxi home for £30. Good times.

Kit Kat Senses, and the Girls Aloud advert for it.

RoomR0613 · 03/02/2020 19:59

Nokia 3310 and playing snake

Everyone wearing wide leg jeans and vans/ sketchers and those belts with studs on.

Wearing tops with spaghetti straps

Those parkas with the furry hoods

The Simpson's on BBC2

Early file sharing platforms

Mini discs

Peak Masterchef

People still smoking indoors

ReginaGeorgeous · 03/02/2020 20:14

Oh god and I've only just remembered that I've only recently god rid of my 'Jesus Loves You' belt from All Saints

InTheTempest · 03/02/2020 20:17

@ReginaGeorgeous I had this t shirt 🤮😂

I had a fcuk t shirt that says fondle constantly until knackered.

newyearnoeu · 03/02/2020 20:30

Think I'm pretty much the exact same age as you OP. TBH I hated school (sixth form was a bit better, and uni amazing though!) but I still have some nostalgic memories.....

teeny tiny mp3 players you could get about 30 songs on or ipod nanos which seemed absolutely the tiniest and sleekest bit of hi-tech kit imaginable at the time but when I found my old one a while ago was so heavy and clunky. also that brief period where mini cds and pop up dvd players were 'a thing.'

illegally downloading songs on limewire and getting millions of dodgy viruses on the family computer (didn't have my own laptop until uni!)

feeling like a FBI hacker changing the html code on your myspace profile

spending lessons writing letters to friends in the other classes with
multi coloured sparkly gel pens, writing 'top 5's' and covering your pencil case/school rucksack with tippex/dangly things from the keyholes! and wearing said rucksack looooow on your back with straps fully extended or just on one shoulder despite the fact you had a million books and your PE kit in it (my school didn't have lockers!)

either 18th birthdays or organised sixth form parties where they would pretty much serve everyone! thought we were so hard core drinking on a week night even though they were always finished by 12. then the next day everyone lying 'hungover' on the sofas in 6th form common rooms until someone did a maccy D run!

purrswhileheeats · 03/02/2020 20:35

Oh OP you've got ten years on me but it never goes away! I ended up on Streetview today and 'visited' my old university campus, the student union, our old (crappy, freezing) flat and the bars and clubs we used to frequent. I was 'walking' down these streets and the memories came flooding back as if they were yesterday, all of which my parents will NEVER find out about ShockGrin

Peoplearemiserable · 03/02/2020 20:37

I love this, Bebo was all the rage too!

InTheTempest · 03/02/2020 20:37

@newyearnoeu our school was in a nice market town and the high street there is full of pubs- Friday nights used to be amazing- all of us out on a pub crawl, most places we could get served and one pub in particular was just youth club really 😂

I really miss those days. I'd scrounge a fiver off my mum for fags and then get boys to buy me drinks 😂

ThisIsFine · 03/02/2020 20:46

Yes! 00's were the best ❤️ 2004 specifically was awesome

BabarEnFamille · 03/02/2020 22:20

I’ve got a really low, wide studded belt from Kookai that I can’t bear to throw away even though it’s been 15 years since I’ve worn it

ReginaGeorgeous · 03/02/2020 22:35

@InTheTempest Grin I had two, one that said 'run like fcuk' and one that said 'too busy to fcuk'. So classy.

Roodledoodlenoodle · 03/02/2020 22:41

Oh yes Bebo 😂 Nobody had both Bebo or MySpace, you were either one or the other.

I know 00s trends/makeup get a lot of stick but I guarantee we will look back in a decade or so at the strong eyebrows/big plumped-up lips/over-contouring/big top buns of today and laugh at it because something else will be fashionable.

RoomR0613 · 03/02/2020 22:51

I think all of that looks ridiculous now.

Sagradafamiliar · 03/02/2020 23:05

Yes, everything mentioned down to the Toni and guy hair cut!
As a really young teen, I can still remember mooching round MK1 and Tammy girl and updating my faceparty profile.
I can't believe all that indie music came out so long ago....it's actually freaking me out as it only seems like a few years ago to me.

AmericanStorm · 03/02/2020 23:07

So much nostalgia! During my "greebo" phase I was a huge fan of massive jeans, Vans/Acupuncture and a child size band t-shirt - when I started going out this fashion progressed to over-straightened hair, a one shoulder asymmetric top and bootleg jeans. Juicy Tube, Dream Matte Mousse and 10 Regals were the handbag staples, along with my teeny tiny flip phone.

OP your nice market town on a Friday night sounds very like mine - complete with youth club pub! Parents didn't care as everyone knew each other and it would usually always get back to them if we'd been in trouble! To get into the town "club" we used to walk in with the older lads, who we thought were really grown up (Year 12), and smoking - we thought it gave us an air of adult-like sophistication.
