Well I never, that’s where that town is!

I have spent fifty years - okay, cumulatively probably just fifty minutes - being utterly convinced Exeter was near Cambridge.

Today I had to check it in a map! Who knew? It’s kind of a Torquay/Plymouth way.

My world is tilting in its axel.

Anyone have other random finds like this?

There is a Crumlin in N.Ireland

AJPTaylor · 23/01/2020 11:30

When I managed call handlers I taped a note to each desk
"County Durham is not in Northern Ireland"

Whatisthisfuckery · 23/01/2020 11:30

Penrith sounds to me like it should be in Wales. I know where it is but I still have to think twice.

Alwaystheoddoneout · 23/01/2020 11:35

Pen-y-Ghent should really be in Wales. I don't know why it's actually in Yorkshire Grin

There's also a city in Belgium called Ghent. Why isn't it in Wales? It sounds Welsh.

GlitchStitch · 23/01/2020 11:39

Thank you Yoko, I never knew that! Blush

I once read a story in the paper about a man who broke down on the M25. He'd come up from Southampton, and was heading for Manchester, and went round the M25 three times, looking for a sign to Manchester, before he finally ran out of petrol.

This was before the days of SatNav, though (old gimmer alert).

SoupDragon · 23/01/2020 12:25

The M25 doesn't look circular as you drive round it so I can understand it slightly but you would have thought he might have noticed how many times he'd passed Heathrow and Gatwick.

BeyondMyWits · 23/01/2020 12:30

I was shocked to find that the northernmost point in the Republic of Ireland is further North than Northern Ireland.

I did not realise Blush that there was not just a line across from East to West.

gingerchaos · 23/01/2020 12:32

An old friend I'd mine went to Exeter to read geography because it was near Nottingham where her boyfriend was going.

EcocabbyRickShaw · 23/01/2020 12:38

I live in Lyme Regis (Dorset) (quite near Exeter Grin)

An old work friend was quite convinced he could come and see me because he was popping down to London Confused

GoFiguire · 23/01/2020 12:43

I always thought that Sandy Balls was on the Isle of Man.

GoFiguire · 23/01/2020 12:44

Don’t even get me started on Penistone.

Natsku · 23/01/2020 12:45

I always thought Carlisle was in France

Geoffreythecat · 23/01/2020 12:47

I'm fine on England. When you're a lower League football supporter you get all over the place. It's Alaska that always puzzles me, what's it doing there?

AgeLikeWine · 23/01/2020 12:48

I always thought Munich was somewhere near Scandinavia. I associated it with winter sports and snow. I remember being genuinely astonished to find out that it is actually south of Paris! I checked several different maps before I believed it.

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 23/01/2020 13:13

A teacher I knew applied for, attended interview and started at a new school because it was on the Isle of Wight and therefore near her boyfriend who worked on the outskirts of London. She apparently got quite a shock when she found out that she was actually on the Isle of Man and nowhere near London!

QuimReaper · 23/01/2020 13:18

LittleMiss Blimey, the Isle of Wight is hardly a hop, skip and a jump London either!

PenguinsOnParade · 23/01/2020 13:20

I get mixed up between the Isle of Wight and Isle of Man too which which one is where. Blush I'd definitely do my research if I was wanting to even visit either though, never mind work and live there.

PenguinsOnParade · 23/01/2020 13:20
  • with which one
crustycrab · 23/01/2020 13:22

Kiddieminster 😊😂 love it

captainprincess · 23/01/2020 13:25

I'm slightly ashamed to admit I thought Kent was in Nottingham for a long time ( I know 🙄) some of these are brilliant Grin

EssentialHummus · 23/01/2020 13:31

Another one for Dunkirk. And I once drove to Blackpool and back (from south London) in a day - I’d decided it was just past Manchester. It was a long day.

GoldenPlatitudes · 23/01/2020 13:35

I too thought the Falkland War was fought in Scotland when I was little, but to be fair to me there is a town called Falkland in Scotland which is near to where I grew up 😁

GoldenPlatitudes · 23/01/2020 13:35

I'm also frequently surprised bu how close to France Jersey is 😳

CinderEmma · 23/01/2020 13:46

I as never quite sure on where Iceland was. I never realised it was north of Great Britain. I actually thought it was somewhere near Finland.
