I have spent fifty years - okay, cumulatively probably just fifty minutes - being utterly convinced Exeter was near Cambridge.

Today I had to check it in a map! Who knew? It’s kind of a Torquay/Plymouth way.

My world is tilting in its axel.

Anyone have other random finds like this?

Another one that thought Billericay was in Ireland and the Isle of Sheppey was in the Hebrides.

I was envious when my soldier husband told me he was off on a course to South Cerney - I thought palm trees and golden beaches - he just looked at me - I may have got confused with South Pacific - apparently it’s just outside Gloucester

well, not really veyr close to Gloucester at all, about 1 hours dirve away! Between Cirencester and Swindon.

Salop and Shropshire are the same place. Just as Berks is an abbreviation of Berkshire, so, in the past, salop was the abbreviation for Shropshire. So when writing to people in Shropshire you used Salop on the envelope as an abbreviation.

Hants. Never quite understood why, as there's no N in Hampshire, but I assume it's something to do with a Latin or Anglo Saxon version.

steppemum · 03/02/2020 15:23

Listeningquietly I used to live in Mddx as a child and somehow that abbreviation always felt really naughty.

GiantKitten · 03/02/2020 15:54

I did too, but I the abbreviation we used was Middx.

Well done GIantKitten, good thinking - yes, it's in NZ. On the North Island and not anywhere near Dunedin like you'd imagine.

hibiscuswater · 03/02/2020 16:08

Hants comes from Hantum with Scir - Scir being modern Southampton.

Yes, I looked it up after posting. I am excellent at displacement activities...
