Well I never, that’s where that town is!

I have spent fifty years - okay, cumulatively probably just fifty minutes - being utterly convinced Exeter was near Cambridge.

Today I had to check it in a map! Who knew? It’s kind of a Torquay/Plymouth way.

My world is tilting in its axel.

Anyone have other random finds like this?

@PenguinsOnParade so does the BBC app. It often files Isle of Man stories under Hampshire/IOW.

ACupOfCoffee · 23/01/2020 16:36

Dunkirk is also in Kent (near Faversham/Canterbury).

ElusiveOrangeTwirl · 23/01/2020 16:43

I always thought Andover was in Holland.

WingingItSince1973 · 23/01/2020 17:01

Someone mentioned Bangor. Many many years ago my exh and me took a weekend trip to Bangor. We went exploring for the day and I had to look on the map for the way back. Ended up in the wrong Bangor but we didnt realise there was 2 and it blow our minds for a couple of hours as it was totally different to the one we left earlier that day 🤣

NothingIsWrong · 23/01/2020 17:10

I was convinced Andover was in the Netherlands, and Billericay was a made up place.

Also, Pen-y-Ghent should be in Wales, not Yorkshire.

okiedokieme · 23/01/2020 17:11

No idea how? Geography is my favourite subject at trivial pursuit though Grin

Mummyshark2018 · 23/01/2020 17:11

@Alun

Crumlin. I know it's in Wales. We lived near it for a while. But it should be in Ireland.

There is a Crumlin near Belfast and Dublin

AlunWynsKnee · 23/01/2020 17:15

2004bestyear and Mummyshark thanks. That one's where is should be then. I feel vindicated now Grin

ElusiveOrangeTwirl · 23/01/2020 17:19

NothingIsWrong glad I wasn't the only one!

WarmSausageTea · 23/01/2020 17:39

Places like Cheltenham and Gloucester confuse me; I always think of them being in the South West, but in reality, they seem as close to Worcester and they are to Bristol, and further north than London.

NothingIsWrong · 23/01/2020 17:47

@ElusiveOrangeTwirl it deffo sounds like Antwerp in my head

emwithme · 23/01/2020 17:47

Ullapool.

It should be in Cumbria, near the Lake District, rather than languishing on the West coast of Scotland.

In my last job, we very nearly had a major issue because the call handlers didn't realise that Lancashire and Lanarkshire were different places.

smemorata · 23/01/2020 17:49

It is really hard to get your brain to accept reality when you have been believing something erroneous for so long. I know where Poland is. I know where Bulgaria is. Doesn't stop my brain always thinking that Poland is east of Bulgaria!

smemorata · 23/01/2020 17:51

Ditto the Philippines - seeing it (them?) on the map made me realise that I had always thought of them as being just to the left of the left hand side of the map and just to the right of the right hand side....so basically, not actually on the map at all. Grin

Zaphodsotherhead · 23/01/2020 17:52

I had relatives who lived in Sheerness, on the Isle of Sheppey. When I used to go there on holiday from school, everyone thought I'd gone to Scotland!

kateybeth79 · 23/01/2020 17:55

This made me giggle, I actually live in Exeter lol

AmazingGreats · 23/01/2020 17:58

I've always known where Exeter was but only recently learned where Cambridge is. I basically had a gap of the East that started at Essex and ended in Newcastle. It's like the whole coast was just missing from my brain completely.

itsgettingweird · 23/01/2020 18:01

Hahahahahaha.

I know what you mean. I love central south coast. I really struggle to remember where anything north of London actually is 8n relation to each other. I went to Nottingham last year and was convinced it was further north than it actually was.

But that was a good thing - less distance to drive Grin

itsgettingweird · 23/01/2020 18:03

Live not love! Although I do love it here!

DinosApple · 23/01/2020 18:14

I'm quite good on UK geography, my brother is the opposite. He thought Cornwall was on the way to Stoke on Trent. From Hertfordshire. Grin

alphasox · 23/01/2020 18:16

When I first met my DH and he told me he grew up in Billericay I thought he must be Irish (this is pre-Gavin and Stacy days)!

MitziK · 23/01/2020 18:20

The thing I don't understand is why my brother who lives in Cornwall goes to Brittany on holiday

Roscoff ferry? Quicker than to that there London.

MrsJoshNavidi · 23/01/2020 18:20

Megan my DH thought Pontefract was in Wales too. Smile

ALemonyPea · 23/01/2020 18:23

I thought Thirsk was in Scotland until we drove through it in Yorkshire.

I had to google Dunkirk on a map, my 16 years old DS is shaking his head at me.

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/01/2020 18:24

I thought that Durham was the other side of Newcastle upon Tyne.

I do know that Edinburgh is further west than Bristol (my home town). BBC weather maps have the country slightly tilted back.
