Interesting article sparklinglime. I'm an abstainer too.

Natsku · 01/03/2020 11:04

Failed at giving up for Lent already, had some drinks last night. But hoping I'll keep off it for the rest of Lent at least.

I’m so glad this thread has popped up as active again. I managed dry January, which is the longest I’ve abstained since my last child was born 14 years ago. I’ve lapsed big time but have continued tracking my units via an app. I’m disgusted to say I’ve consumed 200 units during February. Today is a new start for me, I think total abstinence is the only thing that will work for me as I’m an ‘all or nothing’ person. Reading other people’s experiences here on a daily basis helped me so much during January. Thank you to everyone for being honest about your experiences. I’m going to continue to check in to this thread on a daily basis. Well done to those who have stuck it out and good luck to all like me who struggle ❤️

How are you doing, @TheBlahWitchProject? I’m still plodding on...

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 05/03/2020 21:08

Hope you are plodding on, Blah. I am backsliding - have had a bottle if wine over the last week, when I'm trying to be dry - so need to recommit and see if I can be dry for the rest of March.

I'm suffering from an apathetic slip. Drinking far less than I did but still more than I should.

I fear I am not a particularly good regulator!

Natsku · 07/03/2020 12:23

I've got a nasty cold so staying dry is not an issue for me at the moment, all I want is endless cups of tea to calm down my cough.

Natsku · 22/03/2020 12:12

Anyone around still? The whole dry Lent thing is hard right now, I want to drink because of stress and boredom but also don't want to drink because its probably better for the immune system to be dry right now but it is so tempting

myhandsareverycold · 28/04/2020 18:36

I'm back off the booze just when I want it most. On call nights for the foreseeable (sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring, then going out in the car). I'm feeling very pissed off but my liver will probably thank me for it.

How's everyone else doing?

Some of us are over on this thread, @myhandsareverycold: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/alcohol_support/3810419-Still-stopped-in-2020-a-thread-for-anyone-abstaining-from-alcohol

@SparklingLime thank you so much 😊

For anyone who may be finding this tough and wants to know more about the neurobiology of what alcohol does to the brain, check out this non judgmental article... I have stuck to not drinking but the effects on my brain and body have been tough, even if I am not at the stages described in this article. But feels good to be getting off the heavy drinking alcohol train, and reading this really helped me remember I am doing the right thing. www.candi.nhs.uk/news/unhealthy-mix-between-alcohol-and-mental-health
