Ricky Gervais. Searingly honest??

Been watching snippets of the Golden Globes tonight. Ricky appeared to be tearing into the audience, few were spared. Was it honest, or just for laughs?

Tom Hanks didn’t know what to do with his face until he finally settled on a pained grimace Grin

I like Hanks but Ricky was on fire.

emilybrontescorsett · 06/01/2020 23:25

I thought he was great.

BorneoBabe · 06/01/2020 23:29

Surprised he used the James Corden/Fat Pussy joke. Not because of the content, just because it wasn't funny.

Brilliant otherwise. Can't wait for his next stand-up.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/01/2020 23:57

I can't stand him after the anti-trans stuff he did about Caitlen Jenner

RGs jokes about CJ weren't anti trans.

wilkos · 07/01/2020 00:19

I cannot think of one single time since the Office that his writing/ commenting/ joking/ performing hasn't made me think 'what a bellend'.

He's definitely consistent Grin

FordPrefect42 · 07/01/2020 00:19

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee, anti-trans? 🤨 Care to elaborate?

(as a PP said, they weren’t anti-trans, and in case it needs spelling out, I don’t expect a literal answer here)

DramaAlpaca · 07/01/2020 00:21

I can't bear him. I think he is snide and nasty.

wilkos · 07/01/2020 00:21

Oh hang on - he was in The Simpson's Crown Hmm

That is acceptable!

ginghambox · 07/01/2020 00:27

Gervais and Nish Kumar, Both cheecks of the same rear end.

PigletJohn · 07/01/2020 00:27

He's doing something on the lines of bullying people, enjoying insulting them, with the power of the stage and mike, secure in the knowledge that if they protest or answer back, they'll look like knobs.

Bit like some teachers or some bosses.

FordPrefect42 · 07/01/2020 00:28

How is Ricky Gervais comparable to Nish? His comedy is nowhere near as dark and is more political

ginghambox · 07/01/2020 00:32

Gervais is sometimes funny. Nish is a racist. sorry to derail.

Hummm · 07/01/2020 00:41

I see him as standing up to the bullies who were sat as the audience in the Hotel with him, it is the audience at the Hotel who are bullying us the audience at home. They tell us to donate money when they have more than us, they take money from the charity we donated to, to fund them. They have a huge carbon footprint and tell us to save the earth. They tell us take all the risks, they remove our free thought, speech and safety, they call us names so they can pat each other on the back making us say 2+2=5.

I may not understand his humor, it looks to me as if he is taking the piss out of abilist people and wokesters not disabled people. Maybe I am not understanding. I know a misogynist who thinks Father Ted is taking the Piss out of women and Priests and can't see the humour due to his misogyny, so maybe I am blind?

donquixotedelamancha · 07/01/2020 00:50

Yes, poor Leonardo DiCaprio. How will he cope with that one line quip about his girlfriends being young? I bet Martin Scorsese is devastated to find out he's short.

I hope their many awards and many, many millions console them both.

I don't think 'bullying' means the same thing to you that it means to most people.

KurriKawari · 07/01/2020 02:06

Am glad he pointed out their hypocrisy..and then they still did their speeches about climate change/Australia whilst all arriving in separate cars, flying around for promos.

KurriKawari · 07/01/2020 02:07

FYI not a fan of Gervais, but Afterlife on netflix is great.

PointlessUsername · 07/01/2020 02:28

The caitlyn Jenner thing was todo with women drivers, wasn't it?

Why is that anti-trans?.

Coughy4u · 07/01/2020 02:45

I used to dislike him. But then i read his tweets thanks to feminism board. Hes really intelligent and brave. I love him!

minesagin37 · 07/01/2020 03:18

Let's face it they are just actors. He has a theme with all his GG monologues that is ' don't take yourselves too seriously because you're not rocket scientists' They earn far too much money to merely prance about in front of a camera. He brings them back down to size which is why it's uncomfortable for them. Tom Hanks has been put on a pedestal for years and he won't be used to listening to that.

Oblomov20 · 07/01/2020 04:17

He has a point. These people are only actors. They get paid very well for what they do.

MarieFromStTropez · 07/01/2020 04:40

The Felicity Huffman gag was great.

I didn’t get the joke. Can you explain it to me please? Thanks.

WitchenKitch · 07/01/2020 05:01

Marie Felicity Huffman was found guilty of making bribes for college admission and spent time behind bars.

He was amazing, he’d as happily take the p#ss of anyone including himself. If your offended by anything he said then it’s you issue not his (as he has said many times :). We all have the right to an opinion, but not the right to have people agree with that opinion :)

Ah, I didn’t know this - thanks 😂
