Ricky Gervais. Searingly honest??

Been watching snippets of the Golden Globes tonight. Ricky appeared to be tearing into the audience, few were spared. Was it honest, or just for laughs?

I love this guy. He states jokes are just that jokes and to not take it too seriously but he has the balls to say what other comedians don't.

Leafyhouse · 06/01/2020 20:36

That quip about 'You lot have spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg' was pretty amusing. I think he knew his contract was over, so he went for it. Am also sure the organisers of the Golden Globes love the coverage - plus they get to blame Ricky Gervais for any controversy.

Boogbuster · 06/01/2020 20:37

My my there were a lot of tense smiles and clenched jaws in that crowd 😂

Paint me cynical but I'm almost he was specifically briefed to go for the jugular as let's face it viewership is down so they need some form of controversy to appeal to the plebs and what better way than to have an edgelord on stage ripping into the lofty elites

If the powers that be weren't on board with his "humour" they would have cut the mic and escorted him off stage

donquixotedelamancha · 06/01/2020 20:40

It's just humour, which is why it's so ridiculous when woke-stazi condemn comedians for their jokes. Most humour only lands when it has some truth to it- it is the exaggeration/subversion of truth which is funny; but it is not someone's literal views.

Isthisridix · 06/01/2020 22:17

He’s amazing Grin

CastawayMay · 06/01/2020 22:22

I thought it was excellent. It's his job to be the court jester and point out the ridiculous 'King'. Good for him. Agreed with him on every single point and was impressed with his delivery because it MUST have been pretty nerve wracking.

Stuckandsadintheupsidedown · 06/01/2020 22:22

Loved it!

Santasy · 06/01/2020 22:24

I cannot bear him. I think he comes across as bitter and nasty.

I think I am in the minority though.

LadyEggs · 06/01/2020 22:41

Can't stand him either. I saw him do stand up and tell jokes about rape. But it's ok because he was being ironic. Similarly with 'Derek' Hmm

FordPrefect42 · 06/01/2020 22:46

I absolutely loved his speech. He’s the best at saying the things others are too scared to say, and it was bloody hilarious too - not just because of the jokes but also because of Tom Hank’s gaping jaw reaction to one of them. 😂

stanski · 06/01/2020 22:47

Not a fan of his but his speech was epic.

TSSDNCOP · 06/01/2020 22:51

The Felicity Huffman gag was great. He’ll be back in 2 years.

Tricicorn · 06/01/2020 22:52

Im no fan but thought this was excellent - especially the part about not using the awards as a platform for whatever cause celebs are in to and to just thank their manager and their god take the award and fuck off. That was an excellent moment .

beelzeboob · 06/01/2020 22:53

I though the bit about the in memoriam section not being diverse enough was genius

Gilead · 06/01/2020 22:55

Yeah, gotta love a guy who rips the piss out of people with disabilities. Not.

HandsOffMyRights · 06/01/2020 22:56

It's humour. He pokes fun at the woke.

He calls out Yaniv.

He knows what a woman is too.

TheFingerPointer · 06/01/2020 22:57

He went for the top of the tree in cancelling others and hypocrisy, wokesters rule us all.

SapatSea · 06/01/2020 23:00

I cannot bear him either but have to admit he landed some great stuff this time, especially pulling the virtue signalling thesps up on the hyprocrisy of working for companies like Apple.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/01/2020 23:02

His humour is incredibly clever. He slates movements and industries and companies rather than individuals.

Have you seen his Humanity show on Netflix? Brilliant.

chumbawum · 06/01/2020 23:04

He's brilliant.

He cuts right to the bone- good going for a vegetarian!

ButterflyRuns · 06/01/2020 23:05

Liked him in After Life and the speech was good!

MistyCloud · 06/01/2020 23:18

@justasking111

I PMSL at him. Grin He's very funny and clever. A brilliant writer, and actor/performer, and one of a kind. I can't think of anything he's done that I don't like.

I laughed when he said 'Leo DiCaprio went to the premiere of his new film 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,' and the film was so long, that by the time he came out, his girlfriend was too old for him!' Grin

Leo laughed too, which was pretty cool. Some celebs looked embarrassed and a bit awkward.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 06/01/2020 23:21

I can't stand him after the anti-trans stuff he did about Caitlen Jenner. Also telling loads of jokes but then saying but I'm not telling them, so you can't get offended? Not as smart as he'd like to think.

BMW6 · 06/01/2020 23:22

He roasted them, so they will think it's just for laughs............

HandsOffMyRights · 06/01/2020 23:22

The Caitlyn Jenner bit was spot on.
South Park's take on that is on point too.
