Why do 'nail tech' adverts show gaps at the bottom of the nail?

OK, humour me, I'm full of cold and I'm bored so I've been looking through Facebook marketplace at all the nail tech ads. So many are just awful, but the thing that really gets me is, why do they leave such a big obvious gap at the bottom of the nail? Surely it just looks rubbish?
(You may well ask why do I care, I don't really I'm just curious Grin)

It's a misconception that gel polish and extensions damage your nails. It's improper application and removal that causes damage.

Same with everything really if you don't know what you are doing you can cause damage with it or to it.

Acrylic nails don't chip like natural nails do. They don't bend so the polish (even normal polish) lasts weeks. I had acrylics for years.

My nail tech did Atomic Kittens' nails Grin

cookie is there anything in particular you should ask or look for when choosing a nail technician?
This thread has turned out to be far more useful than I thought!Grin

Can I ask what are dipped nails ?

cookiemonster5 · 19/12/2019 17:45

@HeatedDryer someone qualified and insured. You can look to see if they are register with the guild but it's something people pay for and is really just a code of conduct. It doesn't necessarily mean they are any more or less qualified or skilled.

Ask for recommendation. Is you see someone's nails you like compliment them and ask who does them. That's how I get most of my clients.

In the U.K. there is no legal requirement to have training to do any beauty treatments (bar a few like semi-permanent make up etc) so anyone can buy still from eBay or amazon and set up claiming to be a tech or therapist. Don't be afraid to ask to see qualifications.

@Smelly50 dipper nails are a resin painted on the nails before they are dipped into a it of powder then sprayed/painted with an "activator" to harden them. A bit harder wearing than gel polish but not suitable for extensions because you are unable to build proper structure to make them last.

NemophilistRebel · 19/12/2019 17:51

I just painted mine myself

I used to get gels done every 2 weeks but my nails grow so fast they looked silly after a week and I couldn’t afford to do them weekly.

Sorry for all the typos. Just realised how bad my messages are! I'm sleep deprived and got an ill toddler attached to me pretty much all the time so trying to type while distracted.

RougeVinEtFromage · 19/12/2019 18:38

See @NemophilistRebel little finger nail. That's flooded. So to answer OPs original question, that's why. No offence to @NemophilistRebel, if you're happy with them that's all that matters but you wouldn't (or certainly shouldn't) walk out of a salon with similar.

NemophilistRebel · 19/12/2019 18:40

Yes I’m terrible doing my own.
I scrub off the over run in the shower.

You should see the other hand 😆

NemophilistRebel · 19/12/2019 18:40

And no I wouldn’t walk out of a salon with them like this

Smelly50 · 19/12/2019 18:56

Cookie , thank you

northernstars · 19/12/2019 19:08

I'm sat here in the dark so they look more even and sparkly in real life!

ColouredPolkaDots · 19/12/2019 19:10

My Christmas nails!! I'm huge on all the decorations and love my nail tech. She doesn't leave a gap either, mine are just growing out. She also does a two week guarantee, and works from her home which is very relaxed so I love it. Grin

She’s left a gap m8

VanGoghsDog · 19/12/2019 23:48

I scrub off the over run in the shower.

Me too.

I can't bear the look of gel or acrylic and I really can't get on board with all the pictures.

But I do like mine painted so I do them myself, before bed, twice a week. Keep them fairly short. Always non sparkly non sheen colours. People often comment on them too.

thinkfast · 19/12/2019 23:49

Elizabethmainwaring thanks for the compliment Grin

You asked wheat mine were - OPI gel polish with a blazing star topcoat. I usually go for a blazing star colour which I think has a lovely range of colours. Just my own short natural nails under the polish.

Takeyoutothemovies · 20/12/2019 00:04

I need a new nail tech. Mine started arguing with his colleague half way through my polish. They were shouting at each other in Vietnamese and then he slammed the polish down on the table and I jumped out of my bloody skin! She sat down and removed three of the nails and started again (they looked fine to me).

Anyway, might go somewhere else next time!

cookiemonster5 · 20/12/2019 12:17

Man down! We have a man down! Now to find the time to fix them lol

thenightsky · 20/12/2019 14:19

Now see, cookie if that was me I'd have to remove the whole lot on both hands. Which is why I don't paint my nails. Too much bother.

thenightsky · 20/12/2019 14:21

Takeyoutothemovies That's far too much drama! Shock

cookiemonster5 · 20/12/2019 14:30

@thenightsky I was needing them changed anyway. Not Christmassy enough lol.

But being a nail tech I have been known to sport 2 completely different looks on each hand for over a week at a time while I try to fit in time to do them or I'm trying a new product/technique.

Letthemysterybe · 20/12/2019 14:39

I dunno if this is a regional thing or not, but I literally know nobody with hugely decorated nails. I know a few people who go
to get them ‘done’ occasionally, but only with one colour.

JoanBonJovi · 20/12/2019 14:48

Me too. Plain until glitter for Xmas
