Why do 'nail tech' adverts show gaps at the bottom of the nail?

OK, humour me, I'm full of cold and I'm bored so I've been looking through Facebook marketplace at all the nail tech ads. So many are just awful, but the thing that really gets me is, why do they leave such a big obvious gap at the bottom of the nail? Surely it just looks rubbish?
(You may well ask why do I care, I don't really I'm just curious Grin)

These are my Christmas nails 😂. I just can't get on board with the colourful, decorated nails. I'm extremely boring.

Thestrangestthing · 19/12/2019 10:49

Ah thanks @Simonsaysitschristmas I picked it myself 😂

Thestrangestthing · 19/12/2019 10:50

@flowery they are pretty amazing.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 19/12/2019 10:52

These are two weeks old. And quite honestly not the best set of acrylics I’ve had.

fascinated my own nails are weak and bendy does I have acrylics-as you can see I don’t have them long but it is nice to have all nails the same length and looking pretty. They last about 3-4 weeks before they need infilling.

Does-should say So

AShaveAndAHarecutHalfPrice · 19/12/2019 11:00

Yes, you could have delightfully long nails in an instant, hard wearing too

fascinated · 19/12/2019 11:02

What does one ask for ?

jamesbluntssupermodels · 19/12/2019 11:11

These are my own with an acrylic overlay to strengthen

fascinated acrylic extensions...you then get to choose how long you want them and what shape-mine are short and square. Then if you want long lasting polish you ask for gel polished and then pick your colour

LittleReindeer · 19/12/2019 11:24

Off topic but .. how do you get on with your normal life with these fancy nails? I get my nails done then I do housework / dishes / gardening and the polish starts to chip off within a day.

ExpletiveFairylighted · 19/12/2019 11:32

I only have gels a couple of times a year, but they are usually very good at stopping just short of the cuticle so no real gap but not touching either, which is good as mine grow fast and by 2.5 weeks the gaps are huge, I usually remove soon after 2 weeks if they are in a dark colour as they look awful.

Last Christmas the technician was rushing a bit and one did go slightly onto the cuticle, sure enough it started lifting within a week as soon as the nail growth pulled it off the cuticle. I managed to save it with careful application of topcoat but it has put me off having them done at the busiest time of the year, the nail techs looked shattered too.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 19/12/2019 11:39

littlereindeer if you have them long they take a bit of getting used to-but before you know it you’d struggle without them.
I have them short as it’s my personal preference, so It doesn’t really feel any different to having natural nails. As for colour-I have gels which are hard wearing and long lasting. I’ve done mechanical work on a car and even that doesn’t chip it.

thenightsky · 19/12/2019 11:52

I'd love posh nails like some of the ones posted on here, but I chip them within 48 hours every single time. Even with expensive polish and a top coat Sad

cookiemonster5 · 19/12/2019 12:40

I keep getting asked how I manage to change nappies with my nails so long. These are short for me lol. I just do.

For housework we tell you all to use gloves. Always gloves!! Personally I never wear gloves but I'm forever filing the edges of my nails doing clients and I can just grab my kit and fix it after tea or when the kids are occupied. These are about 10 days old and I did chip one when drunk last weekend lol but it's not noticeable and I've no peeled it so it's fine.

Hardest thing is getting stickers off stuff especially cards or gift bags at the time of year. I get one of the kids or hubby to do it. I've figured out how to do it with a knife but it's a bit dangerous really lol.

cookiemonster5 · 19/12/2019 12:43

@fascinated you ask for extensions. There are 2 different types (liquid and powder often called acrylic and gel). They are both forms of acrylic but l&p is harder and gel is more flexible. Depending on the condition of your own nails and your lifestyle determines which product will be better for you.

They also come in loads of colours and glitters and finishes so you may not need polish over the top as you can have colours and patterns and gems or whatever you want.

Livingoffcoffee · 19/12/2019 14:45

@cookiemonster5 Is that different than the plasticity fake nail type extensions??

One of my nails always splits down the middle, so always been curious to try extensions, but feel a bit like an idiot asking at the salon when everyone else seems to know! So always end up just doing gel polish on my regular nails.

cookiemonster5 · 19/12/2019 14:51

@Livingoffcoffee if done properly no extensions should look fake.

In your situation I would do an overlay. Either gel or l&p just to strengthen your weak nail to help grow out the split. You don't need to add length if you dont want and I would advise against it until the split has grown out.

Your nail tech should have suggested it by now as a solution. You can have the polish over the top too and it will look exactly the same and no one will know.

NurseNancyandDoctorDavid · 19/12/2019 15:05

@Thestrangestthing me too, yours look beautiful. Smile

HeatedDryer · 19/12/2019 15:57

Just reading through the replies, been at work all day.
So if you have the acrylic overlays, does it not weaken your own nail underneath?

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 19/12/2019 16:02

I think tbe ones people think are short look lomg to me. I hate the fake nail look personally when they are longer and "done."

However my nails arent great and probablh look boring to those who like them "done.!"

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/12/2019 16:03

I have acrylics, had them on for almost 6 years. I have super long ones. My nails underneath are fine. If you go to a good nail tech then they will not damage your normal nails. You get used to them when you've had them for so long.

tiredvommachine · 19/12/2019 16:09

My Christmas nails Xmas Smile
