Only 59. So young

OP posts:
DuckWillow · 27/11/2019 09:37

He has been living in Dubai for a while and had a restaurant or a hotel restaurant out there.

Feeling so sad for his family,

HulksPurplePanties · 27/11/2019 09:38

Because he was staying at a resort when he sadly passed.

He was the head chef of the Royal Meridien and Grosvenor House. So he may have lived on site. He's been in Dubai since 2011.

TheYear · 27/11/2019 09:38

@Bluntness100 which social media?

Bluntness100 · 27/11/2019 09:39

Ah that makes sense thanks hulks.

TheQueef · 27/11/2019 09:39

Blush was just googling.
I had mixed him up.
Sympathies to Jennie and family, it's no age to go.

missyoumuch · 27/11/2019 09:39

How sad. Was he ill? So young.

DogAndCatPerson · 27/11/2019 09:40

No, Fern Britton is married to Phil Vickery, @TheQueef Smile

Sympathies to the Rhodes family. Flowers

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 27/11/2019 09:40

When I moved out of my parents' house, I asked to 'borrow' "more rhodes around britain" for the chocolate brownie recipes. I couldn't follow many recipes but those always worked.

What a shame he died so young.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 27/11/2019 09:41

@missyoumuch I don't know if he was ill, the statement I read said he worked up until his last day or something?

HulksPurplePanties · 27/11/2019 09:42

Jamie Oliver tweeted that it was the result of the tragic fall.

Quebeth · 27/11/2019 09:45

Has he since deleted it? I can’t see any tweet that says that

Bowerbird5 · 27/11/2019 09:48

That is sad. I really liked his programme and made some of his recipes too.

diddl · 27/11/2019 09:48

Gosh that is so young, what a shock.

Heartbreaking for his family & friends.

badbananabad · 27/11/2019 09:48

@HulksPurplePanties I can't see that tweet.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/11/2019 09:49

Gary Rhodes and Phil Vickery in their early career worked in the same restaurant. Not at the same time, Phil took over from Gary, so maybe that’s why a pp muddled them.

So sad.

Nanamilly · 27/11/2019 09:49

The tweet is in the Metro.

I wonder if he had been ill but didn’t want it publicly known. The story says he died and that his wife was by his side, and the resort said that he worked until the day he died, so that does seem to hint towards there being something which the public weren’t aware of.

Usually if someone dies unexpectedly through any means the media are quick to point out that the person died “suddenly” or “unexpectedly,”

HulksPurplePanties · 27/11/2019 09:50

Interesting. I read it in the Dubai paper, that Oliver had tweeted it, now that article has been changed...www.thenational.ae/lifestyle/food/chef-gary-rhodes-dies-in-dubai-aged-59-1.943421

I'm glad someone else mentioned his bread & butter pudding recipe, it's an absolute favourite.
He was a fantastic chef with lovely books.

AnyOldPrion · 27/11/2019 09:52

My favourite chef. I have lots of his books. Very sad indeed to hear that.

MeTheCoolOne · 27/11/2019 09:59

That's very sad news.

This thread is a good example why it's best not to speculate on why someone has died. Obviously people have some interest in the reasons but all they need to do is wait a little while. I always think how upsetting it would be for someone who was close to the person to read people speculating about it.

Redshoeblueshoe · 27/11/2019 09:59

Very sad to hear this. RIP Flowers

Pancakeflipper · 27/11/2019 10:00

I'm another one who got one of his cookery books and discovered cooking. One of his books did a starter/main/pud. His chocolate lava puds never fail. In my early unconfident days of cooking when the family came to stay this was my go to book. One of my favourite chefs - always delivered the goods.

I'm a bit annoyed with myself as yesterday took one of his books to the local deli (cookery book swap). Will go and get it back.
