Only 59. So young

DH was reading it out from the online news this morning.

I couldn't believe it - he's far from old, and as far as I am aware wasn't unwell. But having said that, perhaps he had been, but wanted to keep it private - and who can blame him, or his family for that.

A sad loss.

Terrible shame, very sad for his family.

I never really saw him on TV, his shows were a bit before I was interested in cooking. I loved his books though and his Sweet Dreams is one of my all time favourites.

BestOption · 27/11/2019 11:35

Very sad for his family & friends.

I think when anyone dies ‘suddenly’ at 59, people are going to speculate, it’s human nature. When someone reports a ‘fall’ obviously that’s going to ramp it up.

Whatever happened, it’s incredibly sad for the family and with such talent, a loss to the general population who mostly admired him.

Guineapig456 · 27/11/2019 11:36

Such sad news. My thoughts are with his family.

cheesemongery · 27/11/2019 11:56

Very sad news, first of the 'celebrity' cool chefs. Jamie Oliver should absolutely not have tweeted - just like a schoolboy - I know something you don't know... Whether it is true or not, show some respect.

Thoughts and love to the family.

ItsNovemberNotChristmas · 27/11/2019 11:56

Is it weird that people mention his wife by name like they know her?

livingmyslothlife · 27/11/2019 12:02

Very sad. He started my love for cookery.

ThatsMeInTheSpotlight · 27/11/2019 12:03

I don't think Jamie Oliver was being disrespectful. He must have assumed the information he had was in the public domain. When he realised it wasn't (or was incorrect) he deleted it.

crustycrab · 27/11/2019 12:27

I think Jamie owes the family an apology personally. It's not difficult to be aware of what you are writing on social media. Particularly if you deal with the press day in, day out.

JellyfishAndShells · 27/11/2019 12:30

Watching a cookery show featuring a contemporary of his recently, I wondered why he had gone off the public radar. He had such a nice TV personality . RIP.

DogAndCatPerson · 27/11/2019 12:31

Agreed, @crustycrab. Jamie’s been a media darling for years. He knows the drill

Dollywilde · 27/11/2019 12:55

Very sad. I'm 30 and can remember him presenting Roald Dahl's Revolting Recipes in the 90s. It's my first memory of a cooking show - I'm now obsessed with them and a keen amateur.
RIP.

MissDew · 27/11/2019 13:48

Aw Jeez,

Please don't tell me Jamie Oliver thought the phrase, 'fell ill suddenly' meant fall down.

RIP Gary Rhodes.

Elderflower14 · 27/11/2019 13:50

Many years ago Gary did a programme with an ex colleague of my late husband. Lofty Wiseman who was a survival expert. My late DH and LW were in the SAS together in the 50s and 60s.

crustycrab · 27/11/2019 13:51

If he did simply get mixed up then he should've put it right by now!

StealthPolarBear · 27/11/2019 13:55

To be working on that day and die so suddenly surely suggests something like meningitis. Rare but possible.

OP posts:
crustycrab · 27/11/2019 13:58

Really? There's loads of things it could be, that's why Jamie should put it right if it wasn't a fall (probably it was).

Isn't something like a heart attack much more common than meningitis in general?!

StealthPolarBear · 27/11/2019 14:05

True, and in reality I know nothing just drawing on experience. Going to stop this now as I'm speculating. Sorry.

OP posts:
crustycrab · 27/11/2019 14:06

Hard not to isn't it. Either way, it's so sad

caperberries · 27/11/2019 14:10

I'm assuming it was a fall because if it wasn't, Jamie O. would have corrected his post, rather than deleting it?

Lindy2 · 27/11/2019 14:13

It's very sad. He seemed like a genuinely nice man.

Some media are now saying he was taken ill at home during a break in filming.

TheDogsMother · 27/11/2019 14:15

@MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet Me too ! Client lunches at Rhodes 24 back in my City days. It was really great. So so sad.

DartmoorChef · 27/11/2019 14:20

Such sad news. He was one of the chefs who inspired me to start off in the business and many of my skills and recipes are based on ideas I got from him.

egontoste · 27/11/2019 14:22

Oh how sad. I remember watching him doing a demo at the Ideal Home exhibition years ago, when he first came to fame. RIP.
