If the purge happened in real life...

What do you think you would do?

For those not in the know, the purge is a film/tv program where American citizens are able to commit all crime for 12 hours, once a year.

I would like to say I would be out there stealing money to set my family for life but I probably would be hiding at home making sure my family are safe.

You?

I would go and steal some very expensive things, then sell them.
I'd steal a top of the range expensive car as I can't afford to fix mine.
I'd arm myself with a gun and threaten anyone who tried to stop me.

Lulualla · 24/11/2019 20:52

If this were in the purge universe, then maybe the carnival of flesh would be kinda safe. The punters weren't going for one another; they were eating, chatting, playing the "games". They were attacking the other carnival goers. They only hurt the people bought in the auctions. You'd probably be kinda safe just blending in with that crowd.

Soubriquet · 24/11/2019 20:57

True but it didn’t look like you could just walk into the carnival of flesh otherwise that bloke looking for his sister could have just walked in and purchased her

Hushabyelullaby · 24/11/2019 20:58

@Soubriquet he likes living on the edge eh? Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 24/11/2019 21:03

A bit hard on the disabled and very elderly living alone - anyone could rob, torture, murder them for fun or profit

btw, are kids allowed to commit crimes too ?
Looking at how traumatised child soldiers in Africa are, they would suffer the most, as victims or perpetrators.

Soubriquet · 24/11/2019 21:08

It never showed any kids taking part..though I’m sure it probably would happen sadly.

Purpletigers · 24/11/2019 22:35

I’d hide. We’d build some kind of underground shelter.

Inebriati · 24/11/2019 23:07

I'd go and do a spectacular nekkid dance on the pavement outside my house so the neighbour could enjoy the show on her shiny new CCTV camera.
This would also have the effect of scaring off all the murderers so win/win.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 24/11/2019 23:14

I love the way people can just easily get their hands on guns on this thread

A lot of people live in the country and go shooting. My dh has got a lovely set of butchers knives too.

I prefer the zombie apocalypse situation. I’ve got lots of plans for that. Reinforcing the house, where to get supplies, I’d keep a knife and a poker about my person at all times, where to keep cars. Possibly watched too much Walking Dead. Grin

isittooearlyforgin · 24/11/2019 23:51

@AutumnRose1 maybe Everyone would be false, scared to let any real feelings show in case some perceived slight might count against them, on the flip side, perhaps you’d silently tally all the daily tiny injustices that you’d usually let go with people you’d ordinarily forgive. Think it would really alter day to day relationships. I did sociology at school and they introduced the subject by saying the question isn’t why people commit crime or flaunt follow society’s rules, but why most people don’t which I think is an interesting take on it.

safariboot · 25/11/2019 00:43

Arm myself as best I can and get the hell out of dodge.

Staying at home means that anyone who specifically wants to kill me or my close family will have an easy time to do so. I don't stand a chance of defending myself against someone who really wants us dead.

Hiding in a rural area is an idea. There's a risk of random spree killers, but if you think about it, won't most of them head for the cities anyway?

Joining the rioting and looting is also an idea. Be in a crowd, inconspicuous as an individual. And come home with some good stuff. Considering prices will be hiked the rest of the year to pay for what's nicked in the purge, I wouldn't feel so bad about nicking stuff myself.

For a left field solution. Learn to fly a plane in advance. Go to an airport and nick one and spend the purge in the sky. Only problem there is in a civilian plane I'm a sitting duck if any RAF pilots go up in their jet fighters.

Ponoka7 · 25/11/2019 06:58

@Fuckenstein

"Do we really think most people would want to be violent and its only the law stopping them?"

When surveys are done, a lot of men admit that they would rape, if they thought no consequences. If you've lived through the 70/early 80's, you've lived with a level of sexual assault and legal-within marriage rape. The only thing that stops it, is a fear of the law.

There's also a lot of men, if we talk about equality, immediately talk about being able to hit us.

Realistically, the women and children would have to find somewhere secure to go to, hopefully there'd be enough decent men to help us and sit it out.

Me and my DD have had long discussions on this. It sounded great to her at first.

I do have a zombie apocalypse plan, though.

Angela9 · 25/11/2019 08:03

@Contraceptionismyfriend

What is a class 4 weapon? Always wondered

Soubriquet · 25/11/2019 09:28

Guns, knives, chainsaws etc I think are fine

Things like bazookas and bombs are not.

OP posts:
Contraceptionismyfriend · 25/11/2019 09:38

I believe it military grade weapons. Things you'd have to go out of your way to source. And certain bombs.

Fuckenstein · 25/11/2019 19:28

@Ponoka7 well that is absolutely depressing and actually a really scary thought.

PicsInRed · 25/11/2019 19:59

Ponoka7 has it, spot on.

Google the International Safe Zone, Nanking, WW2. That would be purge night for women.

That would be the reality, not heroic daring dos.
Rape, murder, dismembering.

Like this actual recent case of an actual recent chap. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-50512163

Women don't realise how much men really hate them.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/11/2019 20:05

Much as I loved the films and the series it took me about 5 minutes to work out how I would spend Purge Night.

Not in America!

Then sucked myself right back in with the thought that it could become a global phenomenon!!!

It's so bad it is good... ish!

My Zombie Apocalypse plan is far more realistic!

Frequency · 25/11/2019 20:18

It depends on how the lead up to the Purge played out. Given that people in the UK don't have easy access to guns, and stabbing someone to death isn't easy, I'm imagining a very British Purge. I'm in a deprived northern area so there'd be a lot of drinking, drug taking and vomiting and some mild looting. I'd probably join the looters and head to Tesco.

If the UK turned into a mini US for twelve hours with stupid amounts of automatic weapons and desperately disenfranchised people who can't afford basic medical care, I'd head to Scotland to go camping in the wilderness. The Scots seem like a nice, level headed bunch. I'm sure they'd be a lot calmer than the rest of us.

cushioncovers · 25/11/2019 20:33

I'd spend the night hiding from my exh, or whoever he sent to do his dirty work. ☹️

Inebriati · 25/11/2019 21:09

Fuck that, I'd spend the night waiting for him to show up, with a tarantula and a catapult.

Soubriquet · 26/11/2019 02:37

A tarantula GrinGrin

OP posts:
mumwon · 26/11/2019 21:03

actually my plan for alien invasion (read & watch too Science Fiction) & I would still eliminate Cameron - perhaps sent him over to the other side so he can screw them up

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 26/11/2019 23:46

Ok, are we all ignoring the PP who said she'd murder her husband?...Bear

Lulualla · 27/11/2019 11:59

So, normally if you murder someone you wouldn't get any inheritance from the victim. Would that apply if you purged then? Or would you then get the inheritance?
Because if you get the money, then I'm guessing a lot of rich & horrible parents will be up for the chop!
