If the purge happened in real life...

What do you think you would do?

For those not in the know, the purge is a film/tv program where American citizens are able to commit all crime for 12 hours, once a year.

I would like to say I would be out there stealing money to set my family for life but I probably would be hiding at home making sure my family are safe.

You?

They claim it purges the urge for violence hence why it’s called the purge

I don’t think it would work really

Maybe for some people but most would get a taste for vengeance and revenge and won’t want to wait a year every time

Wendy I would counter with Dog Soldiers, but I suppose being werewolves was an unfair advantage.

Fatted · 24/11/2019 12:21

I would just go on the rob.

Isn't there something in one of the films that the president is exempt from it? Probably the one person most people would actually want to do away with!!

ChrisPrattsFace · 24/11/2019 12:21

Good point isittooearlyforgin it would likely make people kinder, to avoid being targeted.

I think I’m pretty kind already, but I don’t doubt I’d be on someone’s list. (Again, mil...)

Soubriquet · 24/11/2019 12:23

Yeah government officials are except and some top level authority figures

I know the prime minister and a lot of the government would suffer other wise..

Especially Trump in America

I'd wait till one set of particularly wanky neighbours are out then somehow render their house uninhabitable.

Make them fuck off somewhere else.

ipswichwitch · 24/11/2019 12:26

It’s funny how in the film they’re

Ginkypig · 24/11/2019 12:27

The truth is if the films are anything to go by most of us would absolutely never be able to compete with the true sickos who we sometimes imagine we could take out in a purge never mind actually plan and execute our own purge!

There are three specific people monsters I can think of who would make the world a much much safer place if there was a way to remove them but in an actual purge somone would take me out way before I could get to them!

CalleighDoodle · 24/11/2019 12:28

I found in one of the films that the government started targeting people living in areas of poverty, very toryinteresting.

ipswichwitch · 24/11/2019 12:28

I’ll start again (thanks DS2!)
It’s funny how in the films they’re all running about with machine guns and killing everyone. In Britain we’d probably all be indulging in petty low level crime - think illegal parking or a bit of shoplifting. Like the difference between an American zombie film (eg new Dawn of the Dead) and a British one (Shaun of the Dead)

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 24/11/2019 12:29

The thing about staying with other people though - even friends and family - is that any one of them could be harbouring ill will towards you and use the opportunity to do you in Confused

Soubriquet · 24/11/2019 12:31

Yeah I found the killing of the poverty people interesting

I could see a lot of government officials and people who hate those on benefits doing this

Littlepond · 24/11/2019 12:32

I’d hide out at my church. Maybe in the basement.

BobLobLawLLB · 24/11/2019 12:32

If let all the chickens and pigs out of their cages/industrial barns into the countryside. They would be caught and put back the next day but at least they would feel the grass under their feet for the first time in their lives.

BobLobLawLLB · 24/11/2019 12:33

*I'd not if

Littlepond · 24/11/2019 12:34

I also wonder about crimes that have consequences after the 12 hours is up. So if I illegally downloaded some movies would I be allowed to keep them? If you beat someone up during the 12 hours but they develop complications after the 12 hours can you be held legally responsible for those injuries? Could you get done for possession of stolen goods if you stole them during the purge?

Angela9 · 24/11/2019 12:35

I'd be one of those poor sods who hides at home with their kids with barricades up and ends up getting murdered anyway. If I didn't have kids I'd go out, because the greatest defence could well be attack on purge night.
In the Amazon series they have a crazy bus of feminists, I'd like to think I'd be out on that bus saving people from the patriarchy, but i probably wouldn't have the guts

gamerchick · 24/11/2019 12:36

Then there was the rich wanting to purge but not wanting to put the sweat in. Paying families for the lives of their sick or desperate so they could kill them in safety for entertainment.

If let all the chickens and pigs out of their cages/industrial barns into the countryside. They would be caught and put back the next day but at least they would feel the grass under their feet for the first time in their lives

Yeah you feed that wildlife, I'm sure foxes and the like would be grateful. I'm sure a few skint humans would be grateful as well. Wink

ChrisPrattsFace · 24/11/2019 12:50

My understanding would be no repercussions? You do what you gotta do on your 12 hours and then there’s a line drawn under it, and that’s that.

Can you tell this is an actual topic in our house.

Also what we would do in zombie invasion and/or apocalypse.

darkriver19886 · 24/11/2019 12:53

I have never watched the Purge but I should imagine I would barricade myself in the house or I would be dead in five minutes.

BobLobLawLLB · 24/11/2019 13:01

gamerchick
True, every day is like The Purge for them!

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 24/11/2019 13:04

Does that mean that sexual predators and proper evil types can be really sadistic and get away with it for 12 hours?
I would like to steal a load of desserts from M and S but I'd be another who would find a good hiding place.

HigherFurtherFasterBaby · 24/11/2019 13:06

I would hunt down abusive men and dispose of them.

FlashesOfRage · 24/11/2019 13:08

I’d spend the rest of the year digging a bomb shelter in some secluded woods. Then I’d hide in it with guns and probably be fine because 12hrs isn’t too long.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 24/11/2019 13:10

The thing about staying with other people though - even friends and family - is that any one of them could be harbouring ill will towards you and use the opportunity to do you in

My MIL would be braced and ready to do me over I am convinced.

I'd like to think I'd fight, because everyone knows hiding at home is the number one way to end up dead in these films, but we have two DC and DH is as handy with his fists as a chitting potato, so I'd probably hide them somewhere remote then patrol the perimeter because I'm the only one with any savage in me. DH sometimes says that if he wasn't married to me he'd be a little afraid of me. In a purge situation that's got to be a good thing.

If I could commit any kind of petty crime and 100% get away with it, I'd steal lovely, lovely things from Selfridges in the Bullring and prance about with a different Mulberry bag every day of the year.
