If the purge happened in real life...

What do you think you would do?

For those not in the know, the purge is a film/tv program where American citizens are able to commit all crime for 12 hours, once a year.

I would like to say I would be out there stealing money to set my family for life but I probably would be hiding at home making sure my family are safe.

You?

I'm not cocky enough to believe I would survive outside during purge.

But I would absolutely love to purge my MIL.
So I would message SIL and see if she wants to chip in on an assassination. I think it was only £20K on the show.

Also season 2 goes into real depth of the purpose. It shows it doesn't halt violence but breeds it.

The main reason for the purge is Ethnic cleansing. That's it.

Binglebong · 24/11/2019 13:18

I'm camping in a disused cooling tower. Baracade from inside and you'd struggle to get in, if you can get a rifle then send someone up the top to sniper patrol.

I may have over thought this.

tigerwhocametoT · 24/11/2019 13:18

I would kill my husband.

AutumnRose1 · 24/11/2019 13:18

“ I think the really interesting thing about the purge isn’t the 12hours of sanctified crime but how it would alter people’s behaviour the rest of the year.”

Ooh, how so?

Contraceptionismyfriend · 24/11/2019 13:19

I wouldn't advise camping. The TV show shows those setting bear traps and other hunting style things.

You'd have no where to hide and those lurking in the wilderness will be very skilled.

Veronicat · 24/11/2019 13:21

I've never thought about the Purge but I expect I'd just put my (detailed and much updated regularly) Zombie Apocalypse plans into action as it's a pretty similar situation.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 24/11/2019 13:23

My zombie plan would also work in a purge because I'm betting on smart zombies.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 24/11/2019 13:30

Ive just binge watched the films and the shows as far as i can get

Ive watched them all before, just revisiting

Id go on holiday...but just imagine how expensive it would be!!

Tots worth it

gamerchick · 24/11/2019 13:35

gamerchick
True, every day is like The Purge for them!

It is. Maybe that's why nature made them a bit stupid. Being kind to them like that.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 24/11/2019 13:38

Let's just say that sales of night-vision scopes would go through the roof. I'd be having one.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 24/11/2019 13:43

I’d probably get killed

DirtyTicket · 24/11/2019 13:47

In my head, I'd go and deal with the shitty parking and dangerous driving around my kid's school.

In reality and stay in my house and cry.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 24/11/2019 13:49

Dp and I have this debate (often spills over into the zombie apocalypse debate ) but dp insists that in the purge it would be low level crime like nicking stuff from Marks and spencers (in fairness that might just be laziness as there is one 2 minutes walk from us)

I am remarkably annoying so I would definitely need to defend myself. I would have my dc in my sight at all times. It amazes me how often people in films let their dc out of their sight in these scenarios.

12 hours of government agreed violence? Kid you are in my sight at all times...need a wee? I'm coming with you (let's be honest bathrooms are like the number one danger spot in any horror ....on that note...lives would be saved if people just kept their shower curtain pulled back !!)

Fortunately my exmil and dsis live too far away and are lazy or I'd be a goner for sure.

I'd like to think I'd be all badass but it's more likely we would be in one room with all the lights off and curtains shut!

Shinyletsbebadguys · 24/11/2019 13:52

Wait. ..I know one thing i would do

Park my car right outside my house on the double yellow lines

Bwahaha I am such a rebel

Tartyflette · 24/11/2019 13:53

I'm sure I could find good, trusted people to band together with, like best friends and loved relatives to protect ourselves and our families, perhaps by renting an easily defensible but remote dwelling/building of some kind.
Or an island, that would be good. One with Martello towers. Stock it with a few supplies, Molotov cocktails and whatever weapons we had to hand.
It might cost loads, but if everyone involved signed a legally binding covenant waiving their rights to "purge" beforehand it might just work......
Together we are stronger, right?

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 24/11/2019 13:55

I’d park my car somewhere else and stay in the attic with all the lights off and all the shotguns.

In reality someone would set fire to a seemingly deserted house and we’d all die a horrible death.

flashingbeacon · 24/11/2019 14:15

I think a small rock in the sea for my loved ones. It protected per se but anyone wanted them would have a long cold swim first.

I’ve never seen the films so I’m assuming no one goes to their work? So id head to the payday lenders and the companies that buy debt. I’m not never technical so it’d be an axe to the hard drives. Since they’ll be in nondescript offices and business estates I’d imagine I’ll have the place to myself. If I had any time left I’d put a gate up at my grans cause she’s not allowed.

I’d spend the rest of the year reminding people that for 12 hours they could release all the information they aren’t allowed to normally.

lljkk · 24/11/2019 14:56

Sit up in the window with a shotgun to hand, I guess.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 24/11/2019 15:00

Only 12 hours? I’ll need to trim my shit list down a bit then...

Whenever DH says ‘what would you do if you won the lottery?’ I say ‘revenge’. He thinks I’m joking.

Casander · 24/11/2019 15:13

When I was younger angrier I'd have probably had a list and been out purging, but these days I'd be at home with a shotgun hoping my list sorts itself out! Although I'd possibly hire a hitman for MILGrin

For everyone who liked the films, I'm currently watching season two of the series on prime and it's really good!

Picklypickles · 24/11/2019 15:22

I would shoot the neighbours dog, put the poor thing out of its misery.

gamerchick · 24/11/2019 15:26

I love the way people can just easily get their hands on guns on this thread Grin

Lulualla · 24/11/2019 15:27

@AutumnRose1

Watch season 2 of The Purge TV show. It's on amazing prime. Almost finished now.
Episode 1 starts right at the end of the purge and the season flows a few characters throughout the year to show how it affects them. For example, one character commits a violent act in self defence, and realises he enjoyed the feeling of killing someone. One character is attacked on purge night but survives it, so spends the year trying to track down the person/people who ordered his death, and its seriously affects his fsmily life and mental state. Another character works for the government surveillance but she watched a friend killed on purge night so starts to see the purge in a different light, and her whole life changes. We also get little snippets of life in that world, like seeing the anyone committing and off-purge serious crime is sentenced to death, but they can choose to enter the purge auction and be sold off to be killed on purge night. Their family will get 5% of the sale proceeds. You also see that celebrities think "you're no one unless someone wants to purge you".

It's an interesting concept. Watching how the purge totally changes society etc.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 24/11/2019 15:27

In the purge is set in US it's very very easy to get guns. The government actively encourage people to purge.

Lulualla · 24/11/2019 15:28

But also, on purge I would submit my tax return will all false info about my earnings. No tax for me!!
