Yankee Candles for secret Santa

Would anyone hate to get Yankee candles as a secret Santa present?

My partner has got to get a new girl in the office early 20s a present. He knows nothing about her. Asked me for help but can give me no information about her! Thinking Yankee candles should be a safe bed but thought I'd ask MN opinion.

Yes, I liked the M&S initial gifts too. My vote is for the water bottle.

Also, as PP said, either pay cash or get a gift receipt and put receipt in with present. Then she can return/exchange it if she doesn't like it. (I do this with all my SIL's presents... Wink Grin)

Suzysleep · 24/11/2019 10:24

I've taken part in loads of Secret Santas and to me a scented candle says "I don't know you well enough to know what you'd like but I made an effort to get you something nice". Even if it's not to her taste, it's a nice gift.

AfterSchoolWorry · 24/11/2019 10:24

No, I have asthma and can't do scented candles. I'd much rather.a bottle of something!!!

EleanorReally · 24/11/2019 10:25

A water bottle is a fab present,
a plant
a mug

EpcotForever · 24/11/2019 10:25

25 year old here. Would much prefer a Yankee candle than chocolate or socks!

BrioLover · 24/11/2019 10:25

Starbucks and Costa vouchers are shit IMO. Mass produced, over roasted crap. If there is a naice, local to the office, coffee place then vouchers from there is far better.

Yankee candle is a good option, although it might be worth checking in TK Maxx for a Parks candle or Woodwick as they are a bit less decisive!

Kpo58 · 24/11/2019 10:27

I wouldn't want a Yankee Candle as I have small children and have nowhere safe to use it.

Whatsforu · 24/11/2019 10:30

People are so precious on here!!! It wouldn't of bothered me to be referred to as girl in my twenties!! The op clearly meant no offence with that. I laugh when you get the menopausal reference, just remember as a woman its coming for youWink I used to work with a "woman" in her twenties who constantly made reference to my symptoms as menopausal and I laughed to myself because she really doesn't have a clue. Besides the fact it was nothing to do with that just health issues I did not wish to share. Sorry slightly off topic. No to yankee thats for old bids like me!!!

Spied · 24/11/2019 10:30

With your £10 budget I'd go for one decent sized candle. Think you can get the medium Yankee for around ten pounds.
I hate those boxes with 5/6 votives that are about ten pounds..
In reality who wants a small little candle you have to put in a holder and can't even smell it's so small.
I'd be happy with a good medium sized one with a Christmassy scent or a plain cotton type scent.

Get her a greggs gift card fgs

WiltedPlant · 24/11/2019 10:32

My sister asks for a Yankee candle every year for her (December) birthday/Christmas present, so she would love it.

I'm not into candles, Yankee or otherwise, but I wouldn't hate it if I got one in a secret santa. I'd either use it as a one-off, re-gift (to my sister!) or give to charity.

healthylifestylee · 24/11/2019 10:33

I got one last year and Was over the moon with it
I love any candle

BlouseAndSkirt · 24/11/2019 10:33

A funky coloured ‘Chilly’ bottle
Nice handbag-size torch
Cinema gift card

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 24/11/2019 10:33

Another vote for greggs gift card here. Seeing as it’s either candles or “posh chocs & unususs as k teabags”

User7369 · 24/11/2019 10:34

I’m in my 20s and have just started a new job and I’m in secret Santa, i’d be delighted with a Yankee candle. Would also like anything cosy or a mug for the office-maybe she has a favourite animal or a pet I’m sure he could find that out and incorporate it, like a dog/rabbit/cat mug to make it more personal?

lioness88 · 24/11/2019 10:34

I think the monogram mugs from Anthropologie are great presents. I always get those when I don't know what to get someone (provided they drink hot drinks).

I think there's too much 'risk' in getting a candle for someone you know nothing about. You won't know what kind of scents she likes and the Yankee ones can be quite over powering. I remember someone getting me one once and to me it smelt like curry but was supposed to be creme brûlée or something, I hated it!

Ohyesyoudid · 24/11/2019 10:34

Personally I feel like a candle is a bit of a generic gift with very little thought put into it.
How about something like these little gifts, quality over quantity

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 24/11/2019 10:34

posh chocs & unusual tea bags

I have no idea what happened to my spelling previously.

BlouseAndSkirt · 24/11/2019 10:35

(I wouldn’t even want to unwrap a Yankee candle, getting the scent in my hands and the whole thing giving me a headache. Awful things)

AllStarBySmashMouth · 24/11/2019 10:35

@MollyHuaCha you can be a university graduate in your early 20s. Do shut up.

EleanorReally · 24/11/2019 10:37

miniature wine/proscecco/gin

ImportantWater · 24/11/2019 10:37

I love scented candles but hate Yankee candles, the smell is much too in your face and artificial smelling. Personally I’d rather have a set of nicer scented tea lights like St Evans sea salt which you can get for less than £10.
