What true crime has left you baffled?

I'm watching a show on sky crime called, "Who killed Garrett Phillips."

I'm baffled at how the police came to the conclusion that their main suspect did it. Apart from the fact, that he was on camera in his car at the school (he worked there) and the victim was also on camera 7 seconds later, nowhere near his car.

It is truly bizarre.

I watched the Garrett Philips documentary the other day and couldn’t decide whether i thought Nick was guilty or not. There certainly wasn’t any evidence to convict him and he seemed quite open as he was being interviewed so it’s hard to believe it could have been him.
It’s a strange one as it’s the type of crime that I don’t think would have been committed by a stranger as there was nothing stolen and he wasn’t sexually assaulted so why would someone break in just to kill a 12 year old. There doesn’t seem to be any other suspects though which I think why the police focused solely on Nick.

So many.

Definitely Gareth Williams and the family in the French Alps.

When I was 7 a lady over the road from me was brutally murdered in her house. 30 odd years ago and they've never found out who killed her.

She was a prostitute but nobody in the area knew. I often wonder if they'll ever find her killer.

FlamingoAndJohn · 28/10/2019 23:17

There is still loads of wild country and water even in the U.K. it’s more of a surprise that bodies are ever found, rather than they aren’t.

And it doesn’t have to be out in the wilds.
I live in a large town. There was some scrubland that was being developed recently. It had been behind hoarding etc but was in a residential area, surrounded by houses.
When they went to clear the site they found a body that had been there for about 20 years.

Sorry, she was called Julie perigo

Abby and Libby in Delphi, Indiana. Been following this on Reddit, Websleuths and Facebook since it happened. The photo of "Bridge Guy" isn't clear enough really and that's probably why he hasn't been identified. They only released 4 words from the recording too "guys, down the hill" Some think one or both girls was specifically targeted but I think it was totally random and they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Very very sad case.

mumwon · 28/10/2019 23:53

in 1963 in Australia 2 young girls(aged 14) were killed in the dunes - Wanda Beach Murders - no one knows who did it.

Many years ago I read through the case files on the West Memphis Three case. It’s a myth that the police went straight to Damien Echols. They only started looking at him because he had been overheard bragging about the murders. Damien is a very disturbed person. His psychiatric reports from before the murders were long and disturbing but he is also very smart and manipulative. One of the three confessed to the murders several times. His confessions were very convincing. The three of them had been drinking in the woods when the three boys turned up. They each grabbed a boy and beat them but Damien took the whole thing further by pulling out a knife. They tied up the boys and threw them in the creek to cover up the crime. There was conclusive fiber evidence but DNA evidence was washed away in the creek.

BadLad · 29/10/2019 05:16

The Ratcliffe Highway murders.

Veterinari · 29/10/2019 06:38

@BlackCatSleeping

Most of that info is inaccurate. Listen to the Truth and Justice podcast (season 4 I think) They fo an in depth analysis of the west Memphis 3 case. It was a police fuck up from the start eg the satanic wounds were likely just turtle predation injuries from being in the water, one of the boys’ father was pretty suspicious/abusive but never questioned... it’s a classic satanic panic case

@Veterinari

I read the actual police files. They are a lot more accurate than a podcast. You can find the full archive online but they are huge. After reading them there really was no doubt in my mind that the police had the correct killers.

Poscast, true story shows, articles, etc. are often biased and interpret evidence. They are there to set out an agenda, so I don’t always have much time for them.

Read Jesse’s confessions. They are extremely plausible as to what happened.

SerafinaPekkola · 29/10/2019 07:08

“ After reading them there really was no doubt in my mind that the police had the correct killers.“

I’m sure this is a huge relief to the police......

BlackCatSleeping · 29/10/2019 07:15

Well, the police got a conviction based on the evidence but celebrities like Johnny Depp helped put pressure in the justice system and they were released. They are child killers and they were released. It makes me so mad.

dayswithaY · 29/10/2019 07:31

The documentary Paradise Lost really annoyed me as they spent the whole time trying to blame Mark Byers, one of the victim's parents. It clearly wasn't him. The film also left out a ton of evidence such as blue candle wax found at the scene which matched a candle in Damien's girlfriend's house, one of the victim's DNA found on Damien's necklace, a knife dumped in a river and tons of anecdotal evidence. Strange behaviour at the trial too. Sadly the child victims were forgotten and it became all about a miscarriage of justice instead. The real killer will never be found now.

longwayoff · 29/10/2019 07:43

Atlanta child murders. 47 children over many years by the same unidentified person. Being re-investigated apparently.

Moondancer73 · 29/10/2019 07:44

For me it has to be Kate Bushell and also Daniel Entwhistle.

Nicolastuffedone · 29/10/2019 07:47

Someone has been arrested (charged?) with the murder of Renee and Andrew McRae just recently.

Moondancer73 · 29/10/2019 07:51

@Isitnearlyweekend totally wrong that Ben Needham's investigation hasn't had nothing in the way of support unlike the McCann's. That's what happens if you're just 'normal' working class not a GP or consultant though I suspect.
