What true crime has left you baffled?

I'm watching a show on sky crime called, "Who killed Garrett Phillips."

I'm baffled at how the police came to the conclusion that their main suspect did it. Apart from the fact, that he was on camera in his car at the school (he worked there) and the victim was also on camera 7 seconds later, nowhere near his car.

It is truly bizarre.

Arlene Fraser
Nicola Payne
MM of course

There’s lots of weird things about the Jeremy Bamber case. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he were innocent.

FlamingoAndJohn · 29/10/2019 08:04

I don’t think we can compare Ben Needham with MM. Ben was all over the news at the time but it was different times. We didn’t have 24 hour news for a start. Policing was different then too.

I read on here few years ago in a similar thread about the woman found in the Oslo Plaza hotel. Very strange case.

Xiaoxiong · 29/10/2019 08:32

@Bouledeneige the case of the Snyder kids is so sad. It seems clear that Pennsylvania and in particular Dauphin County is having its own version of what happened here with children's services in Haringey and across London with Victoria Climbie and Baby P. Safeguarding isn't as developed or sophisticated in the US as it is in the UK and the opioid crisis has made it 100 times worse.

That West Memphis Three is odd. Why was there so celebrities involved? (Never heard of it before so only read a summary.)

Peter Bergman such a weird case.

Squigean · 29/10/2019 08:34

There was a lot a coverage for Ben Needham. An awful lot of people are aware of it.

RitaMills · 29/10/2019 08:50

Squigean HBO made a documentary about the murders. When the documentary was televised it brought up more questions than answers, the trial was a farce, the evidence was circumstantial, the police had basically made up their minds the three boys were guilty based on their love of heavy rock music (which meant they were devil worshippers apparently). A ‘Free the West Memphis 3’ group was set up as a direct result of the documentary and a lot of people got involved including celebrities.

The documentaries are called Paradise Lost, there are three of them all filmed years apart. They are available on Sky catchup if you’re interested in the case... definitely worth a watch.

April Fabb from Norfolk in 1969. As a child that always worried me when out on my bike! Never found her.

They think Robert Black the serial killer killed her.He was around that area at the time

longwayoff · 29/10/2019 09:32

Oh, just remembered the 'suicide of a spy' who locked himself in a suitcaseHmm

grandmasterstitch · 29/10/2019 09:32

A lady in our village went missing 6 years ago. She's never used her bus pass or bank account since. DH and I actually lived in her house for 6 weeks while she was away a couple of months before she went missing. I don't think we'll ever know what happened to her

longwayoff · 29/10/2019 09:36

Billie-Jo Jenkins from Hastings. Apparent killer, foster father, Sion Jenkins, released on appeal. So who? Levi Bellfield?

BlueScreen171 · 29/10/2019 09:51

I’d like to know what happened to Trevaline Evans.

SerafinaPekkola · 29/10/2019 09:51

If an adult person goes missing with no suspicious circumstances and doesn’t use their bank account then surely they have taken their own life.

Havelesstravelmore · 29/10/2019 10:01

I hope you’re not a Police Officer with that closed mind!!

itsgettingweird · 29/10/2019 10:02

Pot that's an interesting case.

Jbforensic · 29/10/2019 10:17

I love this stuff, haven't read all the comments yet but I wanted to mention this. I've ncd just because I mention a few things that could be linked together to me. The Jeremy Bamber (who I just found out is held quite close to where I live Shock) case is... odd. I'm a forensics student and have had contact with some of the people who were involved. They are not entirely convinced.

BlueScreen171 · 29/10/2019 10:36

What?!
They may have been abducted or murdered.

Lhastingsmua · 29/10/2019 10:38

Any recommendations for crime documentaries? (Preferably British as American shows in particular tend to be too theatrical!)

SerafinaPekkola · 29/10/2019 10:38

Yes, they may have been abducted and murdered, of course. And of course the police should investigate. But with no suspicious circumstances, surely it’s the most likely explanation?

BlackCatSleeping · 29/10/2019 10:41

There was a case in the US recently where they found a body stuck behind a freezer. It turned out to be that of an employee who disappeared 10 years before. People used to say the room smelled so bad, but no one checked.

BeyondBreakingPoint · 29/10/2019 10:50

I hadn't heard of Bamber before, just been reading about it now. It's certainly odd - especially that everyone who testified against him either had a personal grudge or something significant to gain. I certainly think it's plausible it was a murder/suicide from what I've read.

mintcorneto · 29/10/2019 10:53

Very interesting thread
