What true crime has left you baffled?

I'm watching a show on sky crime called, "Who killed Garrett Phillips."

I'm baffled at how the police came to the conclusion that their main suspect did it. Apart from the fact, that he was on camera in his car at the school (he worked there) and the victim was also on camera 7 seconds later, nowhere near his car.

It is truly bizarre.

Daniel Entwhistle- poor boy was mixed up with the undesirables on the island, easily done. I imagine if there was a less useless police force down there his poor family would know who was responsible by now.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 28/10/2019 15:10

The Bamber conviction is looking increasingly worrying. I am surprised they're making a TV drama about it tbh - seems like it's going to promote interest in his miscarriage of justice claims while at the same time making it harder for any subsequent appeal or retrial to be fair.

FelicityFeather · 28/10/2019 16:26

@MrsPellegrinoPetrichor do you mean Damian Nettles?

FreeBedForFlys · 28/10/2019 16:36

Who else could have done the Bamber murders though? I thought it wS impossible for Sheila to have shot herself due to
The length of the gun? And would she really have killed her children?

Greyhound22 · 28/10/2019 16:37

HoppingPavlova

I live near Bella in the Wych Elm. I used to keep my horses at the bottom of that hill and I've had some horrid things happen to me in those woods 😬 I would never go in there again.

I went to Stourbridge Town Hall to see the premier of the documentary about it - after watching it I feel it's clear it was the local girl who went missing sometime during the war or thereabouts - not anything to do with spies or witches.

EssentialHummus · 28/10/2019 16:39

The spy in a bag for me too. And I’m still unsettled about the subject of the Serial podcast / the guilt of Adnan Syed.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 28/10/2019 17:06

Asha Degree, agree with PP why did the drivers who saw her walking alone on the road not call the police?

Claudia Lawrence is another as well I'm from Leeds and she was from York so it's always felt very close to home.

Not really an unsolved crime but the location of Keith Bennett's body to be discovered as well so he can finally be laid to rest. I always hoped it would happen before his mother passed away but it never did. I always think of him when driving across the top of the moors going to Manchester

alwayscauseastir · 28/10/2019 17:08

@FreeBedForFlys gun experts have said it is possible she could have killed herself. And sadly many women do kill their children Sad

alwayscauseastir · 28/10/2019 17:08

@SallyCinnamon3009 the Claudia Laurence one Hmm, I always thought it was someone very close to home Confused

twilightcafe · 28/10/2019 17:17

Ames Glover, a five-month old from west London who disappeared from the back seat of his father's car in 1990. No trace of him has ever been found.

itsgettingweird · 28/10/2019 17:26

Another one is the girl (toddler?)who disappeared from shop on a camp in Germany? I'd not heard it until recently but then thought I heard a new report not so long ago they were searching a place in the uk for her body?

I don't know much about it if anyone has any links?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 28/10/2019 17:28

I am surprised they're making a TV drama about it tbh So am I.

The length of the gun would only be problematic if the silencer was included (and possibly not even then) but as the silencer was only ’found’ in a cupboard, by a relative, three days after the police had supposedly thoroughly searched the property (and not discovered it) it isn’t conclusive it was used. The real issue was she had two gun shot wounds and the prosecution successfully argued that she couldn’t therefore have committed suicide after killing the other family members. However, other ’experts’ find that the initial gun shot wouldn’t have been sufficient to kill her and she could have still been mobile afterwards. But that’s just the start of the problems with that case. Jeremy Bamber was not a likeable or sympathetic character, who acted oddly to say the least, so maybe that coloured things.

Potnoodledoo · 28/10/2019 17:53

Andrew Gosdon. He didnt have internet on his console.I think he was groomed by somebody close to him.
Thats why he only bought a one way ticket. He was expecting a lift back with whoever he met.

Plus anotherboy went missing like Andrew from the same area a few months later.

bohemia14 · 28/10/2019 17:53

Also the family who were shot dead in their car in the French Alps.

atlanticblueandgreen · 28/10/2019 17:59

The Beaumont children were fairly obviously murdered, weren’t they? Awful case.

itsgettingweird · 28/10/2019 18:07

Thanks tali that's the one. I remember it because she was same age as me. Also said September this year someone was arrested so that's why I heard it on the news.

Another complete mystery. Child disappears in front of a load of people.

itsgettingweird · 28/10/2019 18:08

Yes pot I read that today. A lad who was 16yo with a very similar profile.

Potnoodledoo · 28/10/2019 18:12

Philip Cairns is a missing lad from Dublin.Disappeared in 1986 on his way back to school. He was 13.

It resonates so much with me because i was the same age as him and i had only started secondary school like me.

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 28/10/2019 18:12

Strange you should mention Andrew Gosden - I've just seen in the news that a new photo has been released today, showing what he might look like now.

AlexaAmbidextra · 28/10/2019 18:20

I thought it wS impossible for Sheila to have shot herself due to The length of the gun? And would she really have killed her children?

The myth about the silencer being on the gun making it too long has proved to be a bit of a red herring. The extended family, who benefited from Bamber’s incarceration, claimed to have found a silencer in a cupboard after police had thoroughly searched the house. They then took it home and took it apart thus tampering with evidence. The silencer would never have been admitted into evidence today and it’s doubtful that a silencer was even used.

And why wouldn’t Sheila have killed her children? Mothers do you know. Apart from which she had had psychotic episodes which were very much downplayed during the court case.

Bouledeneige · 28/10/2019 18:23

Oh as a regular subscriber to websleuths I have multiple cases that remain unsolved and perplexing to me (as well as some mentioned here). Like Leah Croucher who went missing in Milton Keynes on 14th February. Barbara Thomas who went missing in the Mojave Desert in her bikini and hiking boots in July. Or Matthew Weaver who went missing in the Santa Monica mountains or Samantha Sayers missing hiking in Washington state or Ben Tyneside the cowboy who went missing in Colorado. All recent cases.

Some like Connor and Brindley Snyder 8 and 4 found hanged in their basement recently in the US is particularly haunting.

I also agree that who killed Garrett just shows how blinding racism can be and how distraught parents can be denied justice on the flimsiest of investigations. Terrible.

FelicityFeather · 28/10/2019 18:23

@itsgettingweird I don't think they're searching the UK for her body but I believe a man from Swindon was arrested

Isitnearlyweekend · 28/10/2019 18:28

I’ve watched that too. Unfortunately the police in USA are terrible at investigating. They are also more interested in convicting anyone than in finding the truth. I went to a presentation by Laura Nirider and Steven Drizin who are Brendan Dassey’s (making a murder) lawyers. In the Garrett Philips docu they were trampling all over the scene, contaminating evidence. I’d be shit scared if I ever got arrested the America.
