What true crime has left you baffled?

I'm watching a show on sky crime called, "Who killed Garrett Phillips."

I'm baffled at how the police came to the conclusion that their main suspect did it. Apart from the fact, that he was on camera in his car at the school (he worked there) and the victim was also on camera 7 seconds later, nowhere near his car.

It is truly bizarre.

Oh that boy who took the train down to London and nobody saw him again. What was his name again? He was about 13 and the last CCTV images of him were at a station (Kings Cross possibly?)

Andrew Gosden

The Robin Hood Hill murders. I watched the three Paradise Lost documentaries last week and It’s just such a baffling case, did the police look into the Memphis 3s alibis properly? Who subdued 3 8 year old boys long enough to hog tie and murder each one by one? Why were the police completely unwilling to suspect anyone else but the 3 teenagers? Where was the murder site? Who really did kill them?

It’s a horrific case and those poor boys died a horrible death and it just seems the real culprit/ culprits got away with it.

I often think that perhaps some people who just go missing do so deliberately in order to escape their lives or to make a new start or similar.

Yes, so do I. However, how hard faced does someone have to be to never wonder about those they've left behind ? Never wonder how any of the are ? Birthdays, Christmas etc go by.

Albeit, I understand some use disappearing as a threat i.e. be nice to me and everything is to go my way or I'm out the door, untraceable for an unspecified period of time. Similar to suicide threats.

I fully understand that if someone goes missing the Police aren't really interested unless they are vulnerable in way i.e. their age or mental stability. Like has been mentioned above, if someone chooses to be untraceable of their own free will and they have agency to do this, their wishes must be respected.

@MissDew it was more or less decided what happened to him. He was in a bin that was emptied. The bin was initially weighed and the weight entered incorrectly. It was later found that it weighed 100KG so he was in there.

FelicityFeather · 28/10/2019 13:19

@AlternativePerspective unlikely with AG. He was an exceptionally small and young looking 14 year old boy so 'starting a new life' probably wouldn't have been possible at his age. Far more likely he was groomed (unsure how as social media in its infancy really) and went to meet someone with disastrous consequences

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 28/10/2019 13:20

Surprising PPs think the Bamber case is clear cut. Regardless of whether you think he is guilty or innocent, it certainly isn’t clear cut. The investigation, or at least the way it was recorded, is an utter mess.

Yep, and they sifted the rubbish at the rubbish dump and did not find human remains of any description.

BlueScreen171 · 28/10/2019 13:25

Corrie McKeague's disappearance is mystifying to say the least. However, he might have been having a 'complicated' life and chose to disappear

It really isn’t mystifying at all. He was in the bin, the bin was weighed incorrectly.

BertrandRussell · 28/10/2019 13:32

Sorry- that post should have had “No it isn’t” at the end of it.

HiGunny · 28/10/2019 13:34

The Trevor Deeley case has always resonated with me. My DH was in school with him so knew him to see. I was living in Dublin at the time and remember the missing posters everywhere.
There was a search of a site a couple of years ago where they hoped to find his body but it wasn't to be. It must have been awful for his family.

alwayscauseastir · 28/10/2019 13:34

It has to be Jeremy Barber for me too. I fear an innocent man is lingering in prison due to police errors. Also Megan and Josie Russell, I believe Levi Bellfield is the real killer.

FelicityFeather · 28/10/2019 13:36

@MissDew well.. yes. Do you know how big the site is? Just how many thousands of tons it holds?

CoolCarrie · 28/10/2019 13:43

The police have got a name for Adam the wee boy who was found in the Thames, there is a book about it. Brilliant detective work and persistence named him

AlexaAmbidextra · 28/10/2019 13:59

The Bamber case is pretty open and shut isn’t it?

No, far from it.

BreakWindandFire · 28/10/2019 14:30

Gareth Williams, the 'spy in the bag'.

FreeBedForFlys · 28/10/2019 14:38

It’s obvious that Corrie was in the bin and ended up in landfill.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 28/10/2019 14:40

What happened to Nicola Payne.

Every year they arrest somebody new, and occasionally dig up another part of the park a few miles away from where she was was last seen.

itsgettingweird · 28/10/2019 14:41

Read some stuff on Jeremy Bamber this morning and agree it's not open and shut. He was an easy target as a troubled young man with a criminal history.

I've recently watched Unbelievable and Central Park 5 on Netflix. They are prime examples of how prejudice and reputation and power can influence outcomes.

I'm going to have a look at the one recommenced above too

BritishHorrorStory · 28/10/2019 14:42

@TaliZorahVasNormandy
If no one has seen it, "Who took Johnny." Is on Netflix. It's about a 12 year old boy who'd went out and has never been seen again.

Is that about Johnny Gosch? That story spooked me when I read it.

Another one is Tara Calico, especially the mysterious photo that was found.

Whiskers14 · 28/10/2019 14:50

Penny Bell. Stabbed more than 40 times in broad daylight parked in a sports centre car park just off the A40 yet no one saw a thing.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 28/10/2019 14:55

Elisa Lam. The video released is quite chilling it's only chilling if you haven't seen someone having a psychotic episode.

Jon Benet- I think the person who killed her is already dead.

MarathonMo · 28/10/2019 14:55

@Whiskers14, some thought her husband re: P Bell I think..(?)

Zaphodsotherhead · 28/10/2019 15:00

Also Anthony Parsons. who took off on a 'charity bike ride' under some very strange circumstances and hasn't been seen again.

I have some theories on that one, but it's still a mystery!

I find the British mysteries more compelling than the US ones, for some reason. We are such a small island, with so little undeveloped land, and yet people can vanish or be murdered and nobody sees a thing!
