What time do you eat your evening meal and is it the last thing you eat until the next day?

We eat at 5pm, sometimes a little later, sometimes a little earlier if everyone is "starving" after school. Everyone is in bed by 8 including me unless I have something I want to watch but usually I'm in bed and reading until 10pm ish.

When I was little, mum sometimes made me supper which was usually toast or crumpets, or maybe a hot chocolate and a couple of biscuits in my teens and my dad was one for scoffing a tower of biscuits before bed. He'd have a tower of 6 digestives, fig rolls, or ginger nuts piled on his bedside table. I wonder if biscuit habits are hereditary...

Do you eat anything after your evening meal? If so, what kind of things do you have? I'm terrible for eating chocolate in bed whilst reading so have given it up until Christmas to get me out of the habit. I appreciate that a lot of people drink alcohol in the evening so maybe you drink instead as your evening treat. I rarely drink alcohol. I would but I'd fall asleep even earlier if I did.

I often get hungry around 9pm and my stomach has been gurgling for the past hour because I haven't eaten much today. I'm determined though to try and reset my body clock with regards to eating in the evening so I'm ignoring it. I don't think it's impressed that dinner was Rice Krispies Grin but I didn't fancy anything else.

TL:DR what time do you eat dinner? Do you eat anything after that and if so what?

I eat about 5.30 as I get really hungry and would just snack all afternoon if I eat dinner later. I don't have anything til the next day and often not hungry for breakfast. If I'm hungry about 9pm then I'll have a biscuit or dried fruit. I think it's just my metabolism that I mainly eat all my food from 12-5.

We eat later on the weekend, particularly if going out to eat, and I'm starving by 7pm.

KnifeAngel · 04/10/2019 12:49

Usually around 5pm. Nothing else to eat afterwards. We don't do snacks never have.

SpaceCadet4000 · 04/10/2019 13:35

6pm, then usually nothing until 7am the next day. I go to bed at 9pm and sometimes feel hungry, but not usually. I remember learning about intermittent fasting and realising that I did that already.

Dinner is around 6. I usually have extras such as crisps, nuts, sweets on a Saturday night. The rest of the time I don't eat after dinner unless I'm hungry, as if I am hungry I can't sleep or get a headache. Then I'll have 1 toast and marmite or a couple handfuls of sultanas.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 04/10/2019 21:08

I used to wake up hungry too in the night if I went to bed hungry but that's stopped happening now. I'm hungry enough at bedtime to eat a couple of crumpets or a toasted muffin and a bag of minstrels too but resisting seems to have reset my body. I'm not starving when I wake up either and just have tea and toast at 7. I'm thinking it must be fake hunger at bedtime otherwise I'd be needing more than tea and toast for breakfast.

So many of you eat so late but I guess that's working patterns. I used to finish work at 9pm and would have toast or cereal when I got home as ate on my break at work. Since having children and keeping more regular hours, meals have been at 7, 12, 5 give or take an hour. I've always eaten with the children so haven't got into the habit or a later meal with a partner.

we eat at 5:30pm, as soon as we all get home, because of our 4yo. If we don't feed him right away the moment we all get home, he gets too cranky to eat and then wakes up in the night hungry. When he's older we can hopefully eat a little later, because it does feel very early.

I try not to snack too much after that, but my husband will graze through the evening and then often has something like toast just before bed... It's probably the biggest contributor to him being overweight tbh. In the past when he's made an effort not to graze or eat last thing at night, he's lost quite a bit of weight.

Breakfast at 7am every day, lunch around 12. I couldn't survive without a proper breakfast!

Bucatini · 05/10/2019 07:01

My dinner time varies depending on what time DH gets back from work - sometimes we all eat together, but if he's back late I'll feed the kids and then wait to eat with him. So it could be any time between 6 and 8.30.

Then I don't eat anything else until the next day.

Bucatini · 05/10/2019 07:02

I'm still overweight though!

Justgivemesomepeace · 05/10/2019 07:02

I think im like your mum. We eat early as the kids are starving when they get in from school. I get the little one in bed then about 9.30, ill do toast or crumpets or similar for myself and dd17. Probably why im fat.

megletthesecond · 05/10/2019 07:03

Tea around 6-6:30.
Nothing until 7am next day. I sometimes wake in the night if I'm hungry but it's the only way to keep IBS to a minimum, especially on a work day. Easier to go to work tired than with stomach pains.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 05/10/2019 07:23

I eat with DS at about 5.30, give or take half hour, depending on what time he needs to go to bed etc.

Most nights, I do have something sweet. Usually a couple squares of dark chocolate, or small bowl of ice cream or homemade crumble once a week (depending on season). Now the nights are getting colder, I'll have a small hot chocolate. It's more often than not that I don't have something small around 9ish when kids are asleep.

DinosApple · 05/10/2019 07:31

Dinner any time between 6-8. Usually on the later side.

I probably have chocolate 5 nights out of 7.

My grandparents used to have supper at around 9. Maybe that's what I need to rename my chocolate habit...

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/10/2019 08:05

We have ours about 5pm too. DS has lunch at 12 at school so he's always ready and I work PT school hours so I don't have a lunch break, I just eat a quick snack at my desk.

I usually have an evening snack after DS goes to bed, something like crackers and cheese or peanut butter on rice cakes.

I only eat chocolate and sweet puddings at the weekends.

Poetryinaction · 05/10/2019 08:49

5pm is so early. We either eat at 5.30pm with the kids or after they are in bed, about 9pm. If I eat at 9pm I eat nothing after my meal. If it 's 5.30pm I might eat some nuts, crisps or chocolate at around 9 or 10.

Ginfordinner · 05/10/2019 09:03

Those of you who eat before 6, do you have lunch as well?

I eat lunch at 12, and would find 5pm just too early for me to build up an appetite.

longwayoff · 05/10/2019 09:05

I have lunch 12 - 1 ish then some fruit or cheese at around 5. Live alone so can please myself.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/10/2019 09:17

Ginfordinner I don't have a proper lunch, I don't have a lunch break as I only work 5 hours a day. I usually have a granola bar and some fruit at my desk and that's it until dinner. I'm starving by 5pm!

Smashtastick · 05/10/2019 09:19

I eat a late breakfast (if at all) I like a hot main meal between 12-2 (depending on when I ate breakfast) and then soup/sandwiches/toast sometime before 7pm. Then nothing until the next day.

If I haven't had time for my main meal at lunchtime I try to eat a larger meal in the evening never later than 7pm as I hate going to bed feeling full. I sleep terribly.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 05/10/2019 09:20

7-8:30 usually, and I always have something before bed at 11ish (either the dinner I didn't finish, or toast). Otherwise I can't sleep!

I'm not overweight though and I don't eat much during the day (no breakfast, wrap for lunch, maybe some fruit/yogurt) so I sort of make up for it with my midnight snacking lol

Samosaurus · 05/10/2019 09:20

We eat around 7pm, then after DC goes to bed we used to have a snack while watching a film a bit later. But I’ve been doing the 16:8 diet since June (and lost 2 stone so far), so I don’t eat/drink anything past 8pm apart from herbal tea 🍵

thecatneuterer · 05/10/2019 10:12

Any time between 5pm and 10pm depending on what I'm doing and when I'm hungry. I generally eat something else later on, particularly if I've eaten early. I don't really have any sort of routine - either for eating or sleeping.

yellowallpaper · 05/10/2019 11:25

Eating after 6 pm contributes to obesity I've read somewhere. You're supposed to stop eating at 6.

SallyWD · 05/10/2019 11:33

Whilst it's true that I stop eating at 6pm to maintain my weight - countries in southern Europe often eat dinner at 10 or 11pm and they're generally much slimmer than Brits. Their diet is just healthier and less processed. So I think eating earlier does help but you can eat late if you're eating a healthy diet/not consuming too many calories.

TowerRingInferno · 05/10/2019 13:11

Dinner between 6 and 7, depending on after school commitments.

I have an early breakfast and lunch so am very hungry by this time. If I ate dinner any later I’d end up snacking at 5 to keep me going.

Most days have a small amount of chocolate at 9 pm but don’t eat anything else before bed (and never have puddings).

I’m slim but do have to watch what I eat now I’m getting old. I used to be able to eat anything I liked.

MWNA · 05/10/2019 13:27

I fast between 6pm and 10am. So eat about 5.30 and nothing apart from tea after 6.
