What time do you eat your evening meal and is it the last thing you eat until the next day?

We eat at 5pm, sometimes a little later, sometimes a little earlier if everyone is "starving" after school. Everyone is in bed by 8 including me unless I have something I want to watch but usually I'm in bed and reading until 10pm ish.

When I was little, mum sometimes made me supper which was usually toast or crumpets, or maybe a hot chocolate and a couple of biscuits in my teens and my dad was one for scoffing a tower of biscuits before bed. He'd have a tower of 6 digestives, fig rolls, or ginger nuts piled on his bedside table. I wonder if biscuit habits are hereditary...

Do you eat anything after your evening meal? If so, what kind of things do you have? I'm terrible for eating chocolate in bed whilst reading so have given it up until Christmas to get me out of the habit. I appreciate that a lot of people drink alcohol in the evening so maybe you drink instead as your evening treat. I rarely drink alcohol. I would but I'd fall asleep even earlier if I did.

I often get hungry around 9pm and my stomach has been gurgling for the past hour because I haven't eaten much today. I'm determined though to try and reset my body clock with regards to eating in the evening so I'm ignoring it. I don't think it's impressed that dinner was Rice Krispies Grin but I didn't fancy anything else.

TL:DR what time do you eat dinner? Do you eat anything after that and if so what?

I have my 'evening' meal at 3.30 its a habit we got into due to my dh working hours and even though these have changed we still have an early dinner. We then have a light meal at about 8ish ideally something healthy like soup but often cheese on toast or cake.

@ilovebagpuss I'm a single mum of 3 with chronic conditions so I need to be in bed to be able to stay functioning effectively. I do my jobs during the day.

My children are 12, 10, and 4 and all need a lot of sleep. I can't get the middle one up in the morning as it is.

We're the same here OP. Dinner is at 5. I go to bed at 10-11ish and don't really get hungry.

My children couldn't wait much later than 5. I could do a snack and then a later dinner, but I find that they eat dinner better if they dont have any after school snacks. They go to bed between 7 and 8 and will have some fruit if they get peckish.

At weekends we will eat very randomly.
Weekdays when we have the kids home early and when I was a sahm single parenting dinner could be anywhere between 4&5 as mine used to go to bed at 6 & 6.30 and it stopped the after school snack followed by not eating dinner. Before bed snack for them may have been milk, cereal, toast, banana etc. For me it may be another light meal, leftovers, cheese and biscuits, eggy bread or something on toast, cold deli meats and olives, houmous or something sweet like Apple pie, other baked goods.
Generally now we eat between 6 & 8, depends on so many factors, dp hates eating after 8 but it does sometimes happen. Sometimes we will follow with pudding, some chocolate, biscuits or cheese and biscuits anything between and hour and 4 hours after we ate. I'm happy to eat crumpets or toast too.
We have multiple cups of tea or coffee and I love a gin or 4.

fussychica · 04/10/2019 08:35

Eat around 7.45-8pm. Wine with/after dinner at weekends. Nothing else until breakfast around 9ish or if I'm not hungry I might wait for lunch around 1.30pm.

Ellabella989 · 04/10/2019 08:38

Me and DP eat dinner around 7:30 and usually have some sort of small dessert an hour later. Nothing else until about 11am the following morning.

TravelsWithChild · 04/10/2019 08:51

Family dinner at 6:30 and then some wine and healthy snacks in front of the tv after DS is asleep. Usually carrot or celery sticks with hummus, or rice cakes, or fruit

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 04/10/2019 08:53

The dc eat at about 5/5:30 (bed by 7:30). We eat about 7:30/8, bed by 10:30. If Dh is working away I’ll eat with the dc at their normal time & don’t tend to eat again until the next day but if I did get hungry again I’d have a couple of ryvita with cheese at about 9pm.

Crunchymum · 04/10/2019 08:59

Kids eat 5.30/6pm. I sit down and have a cuppa with them.

Adults eat 7/7.30pm.

Yes it's my least food of the day, I don't eat until breakfast the next day (after 10am)

Crunchymum · 04/10/2019 09:00
  • last food of the day.

Kids go to bed earlier, have breakfast earlier but it's their last food of the day too.

unicorncupcake · 04/10/2019 09:01

Normally eat dinner around 6pm, DCs will have a bedtime snack at 8pm with a drink of milk (usually some fruit and a rice cake or something like that). I sometimes have a bowl of cereal at around 9pm if I’m still hungry, but rarely snack after dinner. DH likes to eat some dark chocolate with a cup of tea at around 9pm.

shiveringtimber · 04/10/2019 09:05

We usually have dinner around 7pm but both DC have a snack after school. I usually have a glass of wine. My "hungry time" is late at night, just before bed. I used to pick at leftovers or snack on cheese and biscuits but I put on weight so now I'll have an apple or some pineapple. We never have sweets or chocolate in the house because they're just too tempting!

mindutopia · 04/10/2019 09:11

We eat about 6:30-7 (2 dc, 6 and 1.5). It’s the earliest we can manage. We’re just getting home at 5.

It is the last official thing we eat for the day. Dh or I might occasionally have a snack in the evening as we often work after dc tho to dc until around 10.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 04/10/2019 09:17

We eat Dinner at 8 - nothing afterwards before bed. This is after having a sandwich at 1ish and nothing all afternoon. We don't snack.

Stravapalava · 04/10/2019 09:28

Dinner ends up being anywhere from 7-9pm depending on what we've got on that day, how hungry we are and what I'm cooking. We don't usually eat anything else afterwards usually, perhaps an ice lolly or something if we're watching a film though.

If DH is away and I eat with the DC at 5/6pm then I might have something nibbly before bed if I'm hungry.

Enb76 · 04/10/2019 09:31

7pm and then nothing until around 9am

stoplickingthetelly · 04/10/2019 09:48

During the week it’s usually around 7:30/8pm, after the children have gone to bed. They have their tea around 5:30pm. At the weekends we all eat together and it’s usually anywhere between 5-6pm. Sometimes have a small snack later on like a biscuit/snack-a-jack/yogurt/fruit. If we’re watching a film at weekends might have some chocolate or popcorn as a treat.

Bouledeneige · 04/10/2019 10:38

When my kids were little they had their tea 5.30 - 6ish. But now that they are late teens we eat around 7.15 - 7.40pm. I don't get in from work till around 6.30pm usually so I get into cooking supper straight after that. We then usually play some cards after dinner.

I don't go to bed till midnight usually so will often have a snack later - a yoghurt, biscuit or piece of fruit and a cup of de-caff tea or mint tea before bed.

Fizzypoo · 04/10/2019 10:57

I could eat my dinner about 4/5 and then nothing until the next day. I get really hungry by 3.30 and want a proper dinner not a snack.

We usually eat at 5.30 because of my moaning, do would rather 7. I'm another very early to bed and like to be in bed by 8.30. I don't like going to bed full up.

I eat loads in the day, breakfast, elevensess, hot lunch if I'm at work, afternoon snacks and then dinner, although I suppose it should be called tea as I eat it so early. I wish I was a hobbit and could eat second breakfasts everyday.

I serve sunday lunches around 3.30/4 and don't eat for the rest of the day.

cloudydaysinautumn · 04/10/2019 11:01

I eat somewhere between 5 and 6pm then nothing until the following morning. I'm an early riser tho so that's tea and biscuits at 6am ish! (My absolute best food/drink of the day!!)

GymNovice · 04/10/2019 11:22

Dinner at 630pm.
Cup of tea at 9
Bed around 10.
Breakfast at 7am.

I had to stop buying biscuits so I couldn't eat them in the evening!

Bunnylady53 · 04/10/2019 11:28

We’ve got into a bad habit of eating really late, after DD’s in bed, so it can be gone 9.30 some nights. DH is usually home sometime after 8 so I need to get organised then we can have a meal as soon as he gets in. I was planning to make a curry in the slow cooker for tonight but cba so chippy tea it is!

Bunnylady53 · 04/10/2019 11:29

Oh & it’s usually the last thing we eat as it’s late but I do sometimes snack, especially if I have wine

Bloodycats · 04/10/2019 11:30

I have 3 meals a day at 9am, 12.30 and 5-6pm. The last meal is usually the last meal until breakfast swings back round.

Cliffdonville · 04/10/2019 11:43

We eat at 530 with DD and then I don't eat until 6/7am depending on what time I'm due in the office. DH will eat a second dinner at around 8 and have copious snacks but I'm trying to lose weight.
