Ridiculous situation: I’ve got behind with my wheelie bin collection and I can’t catch up

Treeli · 26/09/2019 19:28

2 weekly collection. I went away and asked my cat sitter to put the wheelie bin out but she forgot. I’ve been running behind ever since Blush

I recycle everything I can but have 4 kids and out council don’t take glass/tin foil/plastic tubs/any pre packaged stuff

How the hell am I supposed to catch back up? Our local tip is open 3 days a week (I’m at work). Neighbours bins are full (I’ve asked). Short of paying someone to take it away how do I catch up?!

Go to a tip that is open when you are off work

Harp1977 · 26/09/2019 19:31

We were the same, I bought cheap vacuum pack bags and vacuum packed the rubbishBlush it worked I kept me vacuum packed the non recycled plastic and soft squishy rubbish. Yes I was desperate

WoollyFoolly · 26/09/2019 19:31

Do your local supermarkets have recycling containers? At ours we can take cardboard, glass, paper etc. Stick a couple of bags in the car every time you go?

ExpletiveDelighted · 26/09/2019 19:32

Is there a tip near your work you could get to? Or a neighbour going on holiday? Or would your work let you stick a couple of bags in their big bin?

Treeli · 26/09/2019 19:32

Nearest tip which is open is over 40 miles away (no wonder fly tipping is rife)

That’s a really bloody good idea re vacuum packing though!!!

I already take glass and cardboard to the recycling in the village. We can only put out 3 bags every two weeks. I have 4 kids, we use all the space even with recycling everything we can

Oh I've been there! I was lucky enough to find a tip open at the weekend, but my friend literally stood in her bin to smoosh the bags down once!

GracefulHare · 26/09/2019 19:37

I've been known to put rubbish into small pedal bin bags & have a walk through the area depositing them in public bins at the shops & park. Put them all in a big shopping bag & put one in each bin you find. Nothing horrible, just general rubbish. Very useful when desperate! Grin

Take some to school for box modelling.
Incinerator.
Seek further afield neighbours with empty bins.
Put it in the erstwhile cat sitters bin.
Hire a skip.
Bury it in the garden.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 26/09/2019 19:38

If you have somewhere to store it, I would put the non-council recycling somewhere to save space in your bin. It seems like it's clean recycling (at least you can wash and dry it so it won't smell. Then go on a trip at the weekend to get rid, maybe the tip 40 miles away or check out recycling at large supermarkets. Find something nearby to do with the kids to make the trip worth it.

You can also stuff plastic wrapping inside another bag (e.g a frozen veg bag) and cram as much in, then tape it up. Make it really dense so it takes up only a tiny bit of space. Either bin or if it's all stretchy plastic it can go with carrier bag recycling at the supermarket.

DeadBod · 26/09/2019 19:38

Have a bonfire.

Soola · 26/09/2019 19:39

Take a carrier bag of non recyclables out with you every day and place in a public bin at a petroleum station, supermarket etc.

They pay people to regularly empty them so you are helping keep someone in a job.

GrapefruitGin · 26/09/2019 19:39

Any family/friends nearby you could ask for help? Offer to cook them dinner one evening in exchange for them popping to the tip for you? I’d do it! Grin

Tinty · 26/09/2019 19:39

It is worth seeing if you are entitled to another bin, certain size families can have two bins.

Hollywhiskey · 26/09/2019 19:40

In our area if you need more than three bags a fortnight eg large family you can get stickers from the council to allow you to have more collected. When I applied it was really easy, just a phone call to check you're recycling what you can.

Celebelly · 26/09/2019 19:40

Oh OP, this is one of my great anxieties in life! I want to show this thread to DP as he thinks it's hilarious I get so paranoid about the bin going out in good time. NOT SO FUNNY NOW, IS IT? 😩

Celebelly · 26/09/2019 19:41

Have you got a local community FB group? Maybe you could post on there and see if someone can take them to the tip for a few quid

TrickyKid · 26/09/2019 19:44

Our council will do detour on another collection if You've missed a collection... worth asking if yours do.

ermwhatda · 26/09/2019 19:50

wait until it's bin day, and then, check everyone else's bins to see if you can put some in. hardly anyone will mind, and most of them won't even know.

ta dahh

Ronsters · 26/09/2019 19:54

If its recycling rubbish, can you store it somewhere? My council once didn't collect for over 4 weeks due to bad weather and I had a lot of cardboard boxes as near Christmas. I put the cardboard, etc in the garage as the bin was really full. You can squash it down too, which makes more space.
If you have a big supermarket nearby, they may have recycling areas. Some will take cardboard, all sorts.

Treeli · 26/09/2019 20:19

@Celebelly, it’s is definitely NOT funny now Angry

So many good suggestions! I did think of having a big bonfire but then I started having an existential crisis about the pollution ffs. I have 3 spare bags, I’m going to see if I can get one of the small children to cram the bags down so I can fit one more in then I only have 2 to deal with.

Get up early, stalk your bin men and offer them cash/chocolates/beer to add the extra bags ...

Bucatini · 26/09/2019 20:25

Take it to the DC's school for junk modelling

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 26/09/2019 20:29

I agree - ask the neighbours. Our bin is rarely full and we'd have no issue accommodating a neighbour if they asked

OhioOhioOhio · 26/09/2019 20:29

I have an answer but I don't know how to link. I'll go check amazon and tell you what to search.
