Ridiculous situation: I’ve got behind with my wheelie bin collection and I can’t catch up

2 weekly collection. I went away and asked my cat sitter to put the wheelie bin out but she forgot. I’ve been running behind ever since

I recycle everything I can but have 4 kids and out council don’t take glass/tin foil/plastic tubs/any pre packaged stuff

How the hell am I supposed to catch back up? Our local tip is open 3 days a week (I’m at work). Neighbours bins are full (I’ve asked). Short of paying someone to take it away how do I catch up?!

Does your council do a waste collection service? You have to pay x amount for 5 bags/10 bags etc... If they do so found this was the easiest way to catch up if I missed a collection or had a clear out.

I thought I had uploaded a picture. Keep trying bin condenser. It's a hook press thing you push the rubbish down with.

Have you tried getting a chair, climbing on top of the rubbish and stamping it down? Sounds ridiculous but I end up resorting to this every Christmas. Much more effective than you would think!

I’ve just checked the rules, it says they won’t collect any side waste. I could build some kind of leaning tower of rubbish and make a note for the binpeople? “Technically it’s in the bin”

Just leave a note attached to your rubbish asking nicely. Worse they can do is leave it.

Squish it down to get an extra bag in, then leave another on the side. Chances are they'll take it as a one off (they do round here, despite the official policy being closed lid bins only)

Double check if you can get an extra bin from the council. We got one as there were 6 of us in the house. It was free for larger families, but a £20 one off charge if less than 6 in the household.

Makes it a lot less stressful especially at Christmas etc

Buy some beer /chocolate and leave it on top of bin with extra bags.

Also don't overload the bin as then they can't lift it as H&S and physically can't get in truck.

Challenge yourself to have a super low waste week or two.

Do kids make more waste as they get older? Our bin is never full but only have a baby and a toddler.

It's bad that there's a cardboard box in the wheelie bin the squisher is squishing though.

@ciliatedepithelium our card and paper bin is a large blue wheelie bin so some cars might go out in a wheelie bin.

Our bin men will always take extra if you ask them, just smile sweetly
