Ridiculous situation: I’ve got behind with my wheelie bin collection and I can’t catch up

Treeli · 26/09/2019 19:28

2 weekly collection. I went away and asked my cat sitter to put the wheelie bin out but she forgot. I’ve been running behind ever since Blush

I recycle everything I can but have 4 kids and out council don’t take glass/tin foil/plastic tubs/any pre packaged stuff

How the hell am I supposed to catch back up? Our local tip is open 3 days a week (I’m at work). Neighbours bins are full (I’ve asked). Short of paying someone to take it away how do I catch up?!

I know I shouldn't but I try wait till bout just after mid night when most people will be in bed and I would just use next door bin and they wouldn't even know

vanessalightfoot · 26/09/2019 22:21

Yes our binmen are lovely too, might be worth just asking them if you can catch them when they do the collection and they might just take the extra bags for you.

InsertFunnyUsername · 26/09/2019 22:24

This always happens to me at Christmas. Street bins and the communal flat bins across the road are your best friend.

Itsjeremycorbynsfault · 26/09/2019 22:27

This has happened to me before. I rang the council and explained. I also explained that I couldn't make it to the tip due to work and young children. They let me put six extra bags out alongside the wheelie bin on collection day.

I've done it twice in fact! If you give them a call hopefully they'll help

Ariela · 26/09/2019 22:29

You must be doing something wrong, we're a family of 3 and I put my bin out once a month or so, even then it's barely got anything in it.
Look carefully at what's coming in to the home and avoid anything pre-packaged

TheGoodEnoughWife · 26/09/2019 22:29

We have also struggled with five adults in the house previously so would be distraught if we missed a collection!

Can I just say the idea of vacuum packing the rubbish is one of the most genius ideas I have ever read on Mumsnet!

MaybeitsMaybelline · 26/09/2019 22:32

I put my wellies on and stand in my bin EVERY two weeks. It squashed the rubbish to half the size.

bluetongue · 26/09/2019 22:37

I’m also going to say use this as an opportunity to reduce the amount of waste you produce. It will be a good project to work on with your kids. Let’s be honest, it’s something we all should be doing.

YobaOljazUwaque · 26/09/2019 22:39

Don't know whether this is available everywhere but round our way there's a private business that will collect rubbish on the "off" weeks when the council doesn't collect, just £10 a time. We have used it a couple of times in dire need. Google for something like this in your local area?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/09/2019 22:42

Start putting your rubbish into carrier bags So it's smaller then knotting it and dropping it into public waste bins when you pass one?

Soola · 26/09/2019 22:46

Once I’ve been through a till I go through my shopping and remove all the excess packaging. You’d be surprised how much there is! I then ask the store to dispose of it. I have never had a store or supermarket refuse.

This drastically cuts down the amount of waste we have at home.

themouldneverbotheredmeanyway · 26/09/2019 23:11

We reduced our rubbish by around half by seeing what our rubbish was composed of - food packaging in our case - and shopping consciously to reduce this.

It's great not having to keep track of bin days - if we don't put the rubbish out on time it doesn't matter, whereas previously we were counting the days to bin day!

It's something we should all do to cause less environmental damage, and now we've adjusted to new eating and shopping habits we don't miss the things we used to buy. I feel stressed remembering how tight our bin space was before.

I have a super size recycling bins m and it's full to the brim every two weeks. Family of 3.

I'm not sure how easy it is to reduce waste when companies still insist on shrink wrapping cucumbers and sending the smallest item ever in huge boxes with obscene amounts of wrapping.

SleepyKat · 26/09/2019 23:42

Save £40 by not buying the rubbish squisher and climb in the bin and squish it yourself? Like grape pressing?

CiliatedEpithelium · 27/09/2019 06:09

Likethebattle Ooh I hadn't thought of that. We are very backward around 'ere. We have blue floppy bags for our cardboard. Correction, A blue floppy bag. They won't take it if it's sticking up past the velcro closure or if there's a hint of glitter!

PumpityPumpPump · 27/09/2019 06:50

Can you put your rubbish in a relative's bin? My dad and sister often take our extra bags when we have took many to fit in.

Treeli · 27/09/2019 07:04

I’ve put the extra bins out and taped a fiver in an envelope on the bin Blush

NOT a bribe, more of a thank you Wink

Re the person who posted about their family of 3 not making much rubbish, I’ve got more kids than you have people in your whole household. I’m also a single full time working mother. I don’t have the time to fanny around unwrapping food in the supermarket or decanting my butter at the self serve.

I get a milk delivery to cut down on plastic. I buy from the farm shop as often as possible and I recycle anything I can. Priorities innit Wink

I can’t wait to see if they take it now. 😀

Queenlatifahsleftboob · 27/09/2019 07:18

Start using carrier bags for your rubbish, and when full drop in the nearest litter bin.

I use to do this all the time as our bins wouldn't take anymore.

stucknoue · 27/09/2019 07:23

I have one bag of rubbish every 1-2 weeks. The trick is to stop buying as much stuff in plastic, compost your veg waste etc. Find somewhere to recycle your plastics they mustn't go into landfill too. Everything that cannot go into the council recycling bags gets boxed in the garage and driven periodically to the recycling centre. We switched to bar soap, shampoo etc too. I would love to have a monthly rubbish option if it saved me money. Even when the kids were babies we recycled everything, used cloth nappies and wipes etc.

Reindeerssmellbetter · 27/09/2019 07:44

I hope the ,£5 works.

Treeli · 27/09/2019 07:51

They took them!!!!!!

And the “thank you £5” Wink

Whoop whoop

I hear you. We donhave recycling bins though, but we have these ridiculous " slim bins" for general waste which are collected every two weeks ,thankfully the nearest tip is less than a mile away and open throughout the week and weekends we go a lot.
