Carol has replied to Anne saying she is shocked that Anne would cancel her flight after promising it. Anne has told her that she gave her no option .
Both Barbara and I have messaged Carol saying that she has behaved badly and should apologise to Anne.

Yeah, I had wondered if the issue was that Carol had assumed it was going to be OK for her to bring Dick along and hadn't told him he was never invited , and then couldn't tell him, as he is a bully. Although his free holiday comments at the GC sort of go against that.
I think that you should all correct any false stories you hear , but ignore otherwise. Anne should refuse any attempts to get her to reimburse them. I wonder if he really booked the flight or whether it was an attempt to force the invite?

Daisypie · 10/07/2019 07:49

I also think Carol is one of those women who spends her whole life pandering to her DH and putting him on a pedestal so that she can't imagine a world where people simply say No to Dick. Once he invited himself on the holiday she assumed that it would all have to go ahead because Duck wanted it to. The idea that Anne has separate agency and does not defer to Dick just cannot compute.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/07/2019 08:25

In the fictionalised version, Anne would disappear in mysterious circumstances and it would take many series to unravel that Carol and Dick had plotted a failed attempt to murder her. Anne would survive the attempt and go into hiding in one of the many properties owned by her loyal expat friend. She wouldn't contact her friends for fear of putting them in danger, but would assiduously pursue all sorts of red herrings and false trails in her attempt to uncover Carol and Dick's crime and bring them to justice.

The denouement would take place at the golf club annual dinner and dance, when Anne would reappear, to the great joy of her friends, accompanied by some very dour looking policemen.

I may be overthinking this Blush

justilou1 · 10/07/2019 08:28

Carol thinks the sun shines out of Dick’s butthole because Dick has been telling her this for such a long time. She told him to go ahead and book, because Anne “owed her after everything she’d done for her.” Carol and Dick are not the sort of people to do anything for others because they’re nice people. They always have their eyes on some kind of prize. Carol’s anxiety is a tool she uses to manipulate people. Like all submissives in a BDSM relationship (Carol and Dick in rubber catsuits - Eeeeeeew!) Carol is running the show!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 10/07/2019 08:56

Oh dear, sorry this rumbles on. I would try dignified silence and just put people straight if asked directly

PirateWeasel · 10/07/2019 09:07

What a pillock. For starters, if Dick had been invited, he would have had his flight booked by Anne along with everyone else's. He didn't. Ergo, it was never intended that he should go. I feel so sorry for poor Anne. Please tell her that the whole of mumsnet is behind her! Flowers

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/07/2019 09:53

I agree

There comes a stage where there's just no point engaging, and if Carol's foolish enough to enable someone like Dick that's her look-out. Ditto suggestions about suing her for slander, which might be entertaining for the folk down the golf club but won't actually change anything

Overall, though, I wish I knew Anne in RL; I like the way she handles things and I like the way you do too, OP

Ferfeckssake · 10/07/2019 09:59

WTF do you mean ..You are not invited ,?

WhatchaMaCalllit · 10/07/2019 12:47

I don't think slander is a thing anymore...I believe it is defamation of character. I definitely think Anne's character is being defamed by this so if anyone has a case to bring, imo, it would be Anne.

Exmoor · 10/07/2019 14:05

Wankers

msmith501 · 10/07/2019 15:48

Print out the whole of the two threads and post them on the back of the gold club's toilet doors... everyone needs a hobby....

msmith501 · 10/07/2019 15:51

There's a small part of me (I'm having a drink as I type - it's wine o'clock) that imagines Carol's home life is beyond tolerable. She probably has to sit on so many fences between keeping the peace with Dickhead and trying to appease everyone from friends to tradespeople, to shop assistants, etc., that she has splinters up her arse. So.... clearly she is in the wrong as far as this post goes BUT maybe she should LTB?

msmith501 · 10/07/2019 15:53

And back on a serious note: keep calm, dignified and state simply "take us to court"... the silence that will ensue will speak volumes.

AnguaResurgam · 10/07/2019 15:54

I thought that

slander = spoken defamation
libel = written/published defamation

When did it change?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/07/2019 16:06

I definitely think Anne's character is being defamed by this so if anyone has a case to bring, imo, it would be Anne

You could be right, but I'm just not sure what it would achieve. People aren't stupid and it sounds as if Dick already has something of a reputation, which at this rate will soon be shared by Carol

Clearly the friendship's over anyway, so maybe it's best to just let these idiots hang themselves - unless they're in a position to harm others professionally, of course, in which case things get a bit more hairy

msmith501 · 10/07/2019 16:30

Still correct:

slander = spoken defamation
libel = written/published defamation

testingtesting111 · 10/07/2019 23:23

Anyone at the golf club with a brain would recall fuckwit, bragging about blagging a free holiday. Honestly I'd leave it as you cant reason with crazy. The following springs to mind...

GodDammitAmy · 10/07/2019 23:36

Sorry to hear this rumbles on OP but I also think Carol's anxiety stems from being married to someone who is a manipulative bully whose behaviour she has completely normalised. She probably told Dick about the holiday, he assumed he was invited and she didn't have ability or maybe even the insight to disagree. So she's gone along with it and is now projecting the fact that she has fucked up onto her friends. Grey rock is your new friend OP.

notapizzaeater · 10/07/2019 23:45

I think I'd be anxious married to such an insensitive dick !

cheeseislife8 · 11/07/2019 00:27

Glad you had a lovely time OP!

As for those two though, the CFery really is outstanding. Poor Anne. I agree with pp, dignified silence and continue to go for fun holidays just the three of you!

EdtheBear · 13/07/2019 10:01

Op I'm glad you had a great time. Anne remains dignified through all of it. In no way is Anne responsible for Dicks flight.

However I would correct anybody who mentions Carol and Dick and the holiday.

ShabbyNat · 21/07/2019 20:37

Just got round to reading for an update about how the holiday went!!
Glad you had a fab holiday & you didn`t have any un-wanted guests turning up!!
But sorry you were still getting the hassle when you got backAngryAngry

DowntonCrabby · 02/08/2019 18:43

I’ve just found this again when closing down open screens on my phone.

How are things @Oldbutstillgotit?

Any more sagas?

whingeygingy · 02/08/2019 19:28

Say no to dick?
Oo_er Mrs🤣

Drum2018 · 02/08/2019 19:39

Sad that Carol and Dick have ruined the friendship with Anne because they are scrounging cheapskates. Under no circumstances should Anne even consider giving tight wad Dick one penny. She needs to ignore the pair of them from now on.
