Are you stockpiling for brexit?

Downtroddenhousingass · 09/02/2019 18:55

I am, chest freezer is full and my kitchen is overflowing with dry food.

Seeing as how the shops were empty last year with two days of snow a best case scenario will be a few weeks of shortages. Or am I crazy?

LadyKalila
No, its crazy not to stockpile if one has the resources.

If by magic a good Brexit is pulled out of a hat, I'll have pre purchased my groceries for April^

If Brexit turns into an onmishambles, I'll be delighted to know I can cook and eat healthy food without having to share the aisles with people who are panic buying.

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 12:00

Three days. I recommend three days. Hardly paranoid tin foil hat stuff.
Do more if you want. Don't do less.

HeronLanyon · 11/02/2019 12:00

lady I am still not convinced I will time my Brexit box usage well. Fear I will be in those aisles for a bit assuming my stores may be more needed later. I seem to have developed a wholly unreasonable view of months of supply chain chaos re certain items ? Just as boats leaving British ports for Far East will arrive and perhaps not be able to dock as post Brexit arrival (guardian ansntimes stories over weekend) so too the other way - cargo leaving Far East now may not be unloaded at uk ports for some time. As for Mediterranean stuff who knows !

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 12:18

@bellinsurge - correct - my apologies - 3 days not weeks. My mistake.

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 12:19

No problem @BasiliskStare

GottenGottenGotten · 11/02/2019 12:23

If the world was coming to an end, there would be no point in stockpiling at all....

It's funny that often the people that dismiss having a stockpile are also very aware of the problems that panic buying can cause - but don't realise that a) stockpiling is the opposite of panic buying and b) will help ameliorate any problems that is caused by any panic buying as a result of Brexit and people not being prepared.

Sukochicha · 11/02/2019 12:33

Not really, but just trying to be normally ‘fully stocked’ as I generally like to keep the cupboards full anyway.

BadlyAgedMemes · 11/02/2019 12:33

Yes, I have a nice, full pantry. Decided last summer this was going to get shit, and built it up gradually. Nothing we don't eat anyway. (Although there are other reasons for us to be more "prepared" for life shitness than just Brexit, what with chronic illness and unsure job situation etc).

FWITW, we didn't stockpile before the millennium, but DF and DB, who worked as programmers, worked life hell for a long time before it, to make sure everything at their end worked fine.

HeronLanyon · 11/02/2019 12:35

gotten if the world were to come to an end the future alien archaeologists would be very puzzled by the quantity of black olives Parmesan tinned tomatos spices and chillies garlic and ginger paste etc in my immediate surrounds !

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 12:55

And @ Bellinisurge - also apologies for consistently misspelling your user name Blush

I do believe the millennium bug thing was so overhyped. I spent NYE with a couple where the chap was officially "on call" and he just said the chances of me needing to do anything are slim to nothing.

So future alien archeologists ( and this is not stockpiling just fridge & cupboards ) will be amused to see ( inter alia not exclusively ) Chorizo ( long sell by date and useful for lots of things ) Bearnaise sauce - bought not made ) In other cupboards Yes tinned tomatoes , jars of pesto , spaghetti ( dried) , tomato puree , now 4 tins sweetcorn ( makes our version of chowder with chicken carcass used to make stock ) & also 4 packs of Doritos ( half price at corner shop. ) Also frozen 4 fishcakes , 4 salmon fillets and 2 magnums. Plus frozen other stuff and one cashmere cardigan in a bag in the smallest drawer. ( apparently the only way to get rid of moths ) But I suspect my family will be under alien microscope because we ate jumpers Ha ha

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 12:59

You do know that there are extra bingo points for anyone who spots a Y2K post.
And I claim them!!!!!

Y2K wasn't as much of a problem as it could have been because of careful advanced planning and occasional investment. Just like we aren't doing with Brexit.

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 13:01

Points given Blush

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 13:02

No problem @BasiliskStare . I get this isn't something you've given much thought to before but you seem like a sensible person. Do what works for you.

isittheholidaysyet · 11/02/2019 13:13

I've tried to stock up. It's all things we usually eat and will use.

Except tinned meat meals and tinned veg.
However we do eat these once a year when camping with family (I feed 10 people).
So I have basically bought my summer camping food. Planned the menu, like I would for the camping trip, if we don't need it. Then I'll consider the holiday shop done.

Also got bread flour and yeast for the bread maker we rarely use under normal circumstances, and some dried milk. The milk might go to the food bank if we don't need it.

Uptheapplesandpears · 11/02/2019 13:28

If space is at a premium basilisk I'd forego the bog roll for a start. I have a load of it under my bed, but if it was room I needed for food instead, that would take priority. I live in a fairly bog standard 3 bed semi but we have reasonable cupboard space and a shed, and room under the beds too.

The stuff you lists sounds like a decent wee buffer. If you can fit a bit more in I'd prioritise that.

HeronLanyon · 11/02/2019 13:42

Day off work today. Sorting out and putting away brexit ‘just in case’ stock. Really oddly I have bought 5 bottles of cif over the last few weeks for the boxes. Absolutely ridiculous. Be careful with lists everyone ! Apols if I have triggered cif wars.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 11/02/2019 13:59

We get some bulk stuff off Amazon. Easier than the supermarket

GottenGottenGotten · 11/02/2019 14:00

OMG, CIF!!

That's going on my list.

I hadn't used it in ages, but when the stuff I had been using finished, I found a nearly finished bottle of Cif and cleaned my bath with it instead.

It looked SO MUCH BETTER. I don't know why I stopped using it tbh...

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 14:03

And Amazon have everything all the time?Hmm

TalkinPeece · 11/02/2019 14:06

whenthedeal

Amazon will have the same supply issues as everybody else in April ....

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 11/02/2019 14:09

Oh no of course they don’t but surely you buy stuff from whoever stocks the cheapest when they have it. They have the toilet rolls I use st the moment so I will get another 90 in. If people only need three days extra stuff which is nothing they can easily get that before end of March surely

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 11/02/2019 14:11

But we are not getting it in April We are getting it now

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 14:12

@uptheapplesandpears - thanks but you see - we do not have under bed storage. Honestly honestly when I say our house is small and not much storage I cannot emphasise enough how small and Not much storage That said - I very much appreciate your advice. Goodness - I would love a shed. But I reckon we could get through 3 days. Or just assume all will be OK - No-one answer that - my problem if so it be.

How much I should thank you all for making me think about something I frankly had not. What I do about it remains to be seen - thinking to be done - but not your problem , mine. Thank you for posing the question though - it is very very interesting to see different points of view - All best to all - Basilisk.

I think I may prioritise loo roll.

@HeronLanyon - I read your post quickly and thought you had bought 5 bottles of Cider. I know I know I know that was me getting it wrong. Although if western civilisation is going to collapse ( That is a joke everyone ) who knows whether 5 bottles of cider or 5 bottles of CIF are the better answer ? Grin

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 11/02/2019 14:13

When did I say I was getting it in April. That would be foolish. I didn’t say April And 3 days is not prepping

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 11/02/2019 14:15

When did I say April
