Are you stockpiling for brexit?

I am, chest freezer is full and my kitchen is overflowing with dry food.

Seeing as how the shops were empty last year with two days of snow a best case scenario will be a few weeks of shortages. Or am I crazy?

If you have the money and space to do it, then why on earth WOULDN'T you get in extra stocks of the long life stuff you're going to use anyway?

Best case scenario: you spend a bit less on food in April and May.

Worst case scenario: well...

Let's not forget that this is a government who prepared for Brexit by giving a ferry contract to a company without any boats.

And buying extra of the long life stuff now, while the supply lines are working well, doesn't cause shortages. It's panic buying food of all kinds once there IS a crisis that causes shortages. And that's what we're trying to avoid.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/02/2019 10:49

I've got some extra stuff in, almost all stuff I'd use anyway - food, toiletries, pet supplies, loo roll etc.

I'd rather be wrong than hungry. If there at no shortages I'll merely have lower food bills for a few months. If I'm right I'll be very grateful I prepped. It will also help to insulate me against any price rises.

I've never prepped before in my life, and I'm rather dismayed to find myself needing to go down this path, but right now it seems like the only sensible course of action.

Uptheapplesandpears · 10/02/2019 10:54

The recent ferry contract shenanigans scared me. I had been relieved at the announcement that lorries would be let through. Have arrangements even been made for lorries carrying food to continue being ferried across?

thatsmyspace · 10/02/2019 11:04

No ones going to starve ffs. It's brexit not the fucking apocalypse 😂

Plus I'm sure my local Kebab shop will keep be going 🤦🏻‍♀️

bellinisurge · 10/02/2019 11:06

Where will your local kebab shop get its supplies? Nice and patronising way of addressing food shortages btw, are you in the DUP?

Uptheapplesandpears · 10/02/2019 11:09

Out of interest, do you think people who are stashing food and toiletries think people will be starving? I see so many people make this point but nobody seems to explain why it's relevant.

Also, your local kebab shop use the supply chain too. If there are issues, they're not going to be able to rely on some kind of kebab exceptionality clause. Although I suppose there's always the local cats and pigeons...

DorindaLestrange · 10/02/2019 11:15

kebab exceptionality clause GrinGrinGrin

When I read some of the Brexit Bingo comments on here, it's hard not to think "Darwin in action." Although obviously I hope I'm wrong.

ArmchairTraveller · 10/02/2019 11:18

I don’t bother trying to debate with people who are happy to trust the government to sort out all the problems, so we don’t have to think. Or question.
Yes, of course you can live on kebabs. You are right not to be concerned, and we are all just foolish fusspots. Perhaps this isn’t the thread for you, there must be much more fun ones out there you’d like.

frumpety · 10/02/2019 11:21

I have enough to live off for a week or so, am also including a couple of my more vulnerable neighbours in my calculations. Also don't think we have seen the back of the snow yet.

Uptheapplesandpears · 10/02/2019 11:26

Maybe TM would've got the WA through Parliament if there had been a kebab exceptionality clause!

thatsmyspace · 10/02/2019 11:30

Well if this apocalypse is happening then I'm sure my local takeaways have done the stockpiling for me 👍🏼

ArmchairTraveller · 10/02/2019 11:35

Considering the state of many takeaways, they’ll be able to diversify into rodents and cockroaches as protein supplements.
ToffeeBrexitRatOnAStick anyone? CMOT Dibbler would approve.

bellinisurge · 10/02/2019 11:36

I don't think people will starve. But I think there will be, at best, less choice (by which I mean shit choice without anything like a tolerable balance) plus price rises. Possibly large ones.
It is telling that Sainsburys started an 8 week price "lock" a couple of weeks ago . When 8 weeks is up as Brexit starts, who knows?
The army are stockpiling for a reason. The major food retailers have written to the PM for a reason. There is now a policy to have open borders on food to let any shit in after Brexit. For a reason.
So I don't think the patronising idea that "my kebab shop will be ok" actually means anything useful to anyone and is typical "drive by" bollocks that increasingly desperate No Dealers on here are resorting to.

brainache78 · 10/02/2019 11:41

Oh dear.

This shit show of a Government are pretty convinced that there will be problems with supplies - purely because of the chaos at ports when there is no plan for crossing the channel with food and livestock. They are making contingency plans about that - and about the massive lorry park needed at Dover (and they have planned for little else!) so if they are worried about supply chain disruption, then I think it's a fair bet that there will be some! Maybe we need to be prepared too? Just a thought...

If they somehow manage to get it sorted in a couple of months, then no harm done - but I think it's massively dangerous to assume things will be ok.

Even if there is no actual disruption to the supply chain, then you can bet that food prices will rise. Better to buy now than face massive food bills post-brexit.

I just think it's sensible to be prepared. I'm not sure getting a couple of extra tins and packets is akin to running through the streets wailing with a 'the end of the world is nigh' sandwich board!

HeronLanyon · 10/02/2019 11:41

Frumpety - lovely of you. Me too. Rather annoyingly however I can’t help but take in consideration my lovely dp who refuses to stock up.
1 minor positive re my lovely ma dying before Christmas is my sister and I have found we are grateful we are not worrying about her food stocks. Actually we can raid her house before sold as there is an impressive amount of unopened dry stuff - much donated to food banks but a bit kept by for when we visit house sorting stuff.

rosie39forever · 10/02/2019 11:44

I've been buying a few extra tins and dry goods since the summer and now have a good stock! I don't give one flying fuck if anyone thinks I'm crazy I have peace of mind knowing that if the shite hits the fan then my family will be ok, and if it all comes to nothing the I'll have a good few months of cheaper food bills and anything I don't use will go to the local food bank so win win as far as I'm concerned.

And also wouldn't trust this government to run a bath let alone the country.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 10/02/2019 11:52

Yes. Have a few months of food here. As a single parent the last thing I want is to be hunting the shops for anything dd will eat, esp if it is like the Black Friday Sales! I've got bulk loo roll and washing powder, powdered eggs and milk and extra dog food. Water purification tablets are quite cheap on Amazon, as I've read reports that we get the bulk of these from EU so there is a potential threat there. Other than that more tins and pasta, freezer is stocked with veg and meat. It's not going to help much in the very long run, but it will buffer us from the prices going up and save us unnecessary trips into town. Most people I know (who aren't leavers) are preparing similarly. It's silly to have the chance to prepare and ignore it, or say that supermarkets, the army and Civil Servants, Defra etc are all somehow just "scaremongering" Confused.

Uptheapplesandpears · 10/02/2019 12:04

Why would the kebab shop have done that, thatsmyspace? After all, it's Brexit not the fucking apocalypse.

bellinisurge · 10/02/2019 12:07

I trust my local kebab shop for all my meals. And the good thing is that they can accommodate everyone in my area without running out of stocks. I think they keep a unicorn in the back yard.HmmConfused

rosie39forever · 10/02/2019 12:11

Bellinisurge don't go getting jealous of the kebab shop we're all getting our very own rainbow farting unicorns after brexit the leavers promised us🙄

ContinuityError · 10/02/2019 12:13

I stocked up on 6 months of cat food. DH says it’s a waste of time, if we get hungry the cat will be the first thing to get eaten go.

PostNotInHaste · 10/02/2019 12:18

And what exactly is Brexit Uptheapples? With less time than 2 months no one actually knows, our Government is generally viewed as utterly inept by most of the country, the world really for that matter. It is a triumph of hope over reality not to have concerns at this point .

PostNotInHaste · 10/02/2019 12:20

The annoying thing is that those who claim people are hysterical about it will benefit as less pressure on available food. So they get to be obnoxious wankers and benefit from other people taking a more pragmatic approach.

treadcarefull · 10/02/2019 12:20

No. & it's people like you that do that will cause a food shortage. If people continued to shop like normal it would be fine, minus a few items for a while, strawberries etc. But because people panic buy, like at Christmas when the SHOPS ARE SHUT FOR ONE DAY then the shelves are bare.

PostNotInHaste · 10/02/2019 12:24

No it won’t as people are gradually adding a few items each time over a number of weeks when it’s still easy for companies to order increased supplies as already being told to do by the (fucking crap) Government. Big difference between this and when the supply chain shuts down in the snow only a short amount of notice.
