Are you stockpiling for brexit?

I am, chest freezer is full and my kitchen is overflowing with dry food.

Seeing as how the shops were empty last year with two days of snow a best case scenario will be a few weeks of shortages. Or am I crazy?

I do think everything will be fine but that hasn't stopped me from prepping. That's because I'm responsible for 3 kids who will want to know why i wasn't ready if things go wrong. Fil is a gardener by trade so I intend to ask him for help to grow our fave veggies. And I've got one week's food shop saved. I intend to increase this slowly. Dh will be turning our understairs cupboard into a larder by adding shelves etc. Keeping the larder fully stocked will be my new way of running our household for the future. Also finding ways to cope in difficult situations. At Xmas we lost electricity for 3 hours. Our hob is electric and dinner couldn't be cooked. Dh drove to mil house to finish cooking the pot of curry. So keeping the camping stove available for future incidents, candles ready and battery packs charged is part of my planning, not for brexit but for life generally.

Talkin - thank you! Looks like just the thread for me...I'll pop over there now Smile

VanGogh - excellent advice Grin My NDN is a keen veg grower and a little gruff at times so I was going to ask his advice and check where he thought the best place for raised beds would be incase I accidentally piss him off by putting them too close to his fence - he's very protective over his fence but gives me lots of beans and tomatoes so I don't mind Grin

Ivegotthree · 11/02/2019 00:09

todaythiscouldbe you're trying to use logic with someone who thinks illogical thoughts! Won't work!

(I totally agree with you BTW. No stockpiling here).

Andromeida59 · 11/02/2019 02:01

We are. We've stocked tinned things, dry foods and olive oil etc. DO works with someone high up in HMRC who has said that the "unofficial advice" has been to stock up. I am worried about my meds though. Brexit voting in-laws think we're mad but then they believed things that were written on the side of a bus.

Andromeida59 · 11/02/2019 02:03

We've also bought cat food as it comes from Europe.

I also hate the Millenium bug analogy. It was one issue, people knew what the issue was and how to fix it. They also had years in which to do so. Nothing like Brexit.

captainjackandjill · 11/02/2019 02:53

Just wanted to pop on the thread and say a huge thank you to @bellinisurge . We are snowed in! I'm a prepper so always have enough food, but reading Bellini's prepper posts made me realize that ridiculously I've never added extra loo rolls. Read it last week and bought some, thankfully.

My very pregnant DD thanks you too!!Flowers

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 04:28

"works with someone high up in HMRC who has said that the "unofficial advice" has been to stock up."

Is this true - not saying it is not but I am just astonished and also a bit Sad as have very little storage space.

In the olden days if loo roll was in short supply newspaper torn in pieces would do - doesn't really work when people have a newspaper app on their iPad does it Grin

Gosh - I honestly did not realise this was A Thing

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 06:09

You are welcome @captainjackandjill Smile

Peacocking · 11/02/2019 07:02

We realised (thanks Brexit - you're good for something at least) that we didn't have much practical resilience in place. We've now got extremely healthy stockpiles of food, petfood and feed for livestock. We've massively stocked up on cleaning products and bathroom products. Bought a polytunnel and starting an indoor hydroponics system to produce food all year. We're very aware that inflation could go a bit mad, and things that are pretty cheap now could dramatically go up in price - I'm already noticing it starting. We've got gas tanks for our stove and heating, log burners plus electric and I ordered a very large amount of tea light candles from Wilkos, £2 for 100 which will never go off and I can't see them ever costing less than they do now. That's heat and light sorted. Our food stocks are all things we use, and it's bloody marvoulous having so much choice and never running out of anything. Our water pipes are also pretty vulnerable, so we've taken measures there as we need a lot of water for the animals alone.

We live offshore AND very rurally and without neighbours, away from any nearby roads, so we're right at the end of the supply chain, plus have much higher risk of weather disruption to supplies. I can confirm that loo roll, bread and milk are the first things to vanish when our boats don't sail with supplies in bad weather. The empty shelves then seem to trigger people into frantic christmas-esque bulk buying.

So, yes we are stockpiling. But more as a easier way of life and for our own general peace of mind now rather than for Brexit.

HeronLanyon · 11/02/2019 07:45

basilisk I am about to do a penultimate ‘extras’ shop. On my list is final loo roll top up. Please don’t tell me I will be dodging you in the aisle to get it !Grin
Live in central London so don’t think we are yet at the stage of seeds and polytunnels in squares and parks but good for everyone who has land to do this. Sensible on every level and fun !
Have friend who lives in old moated house in remote area. He always says if shit hits fan he can pull up drawbridge (there isn’t one and the moat is half clogged). Kind of seems there may be something in that.
What a mess !

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 08:43

@HeronLanyon - I shall be the person with an obvious disguise in the Loo Roll Aisle. Do not mess with me. Grin

I just had not appreciated that stocking up was A Thing. And if it is I ( and my family ) are frankly buggered as we have v small house and no garden. Shall I practise my DM sad face Grin. Well - on the basis I have got through most things by saying I shall cross that bridge when I come to it I shall pretty much ignore this one. MN - would it be OK to stock up on Loo roll in peach when you normally have white Grin Grin Is the supply chain really that fragile ?

Honestly I am asking because it had never occurred to me to stock up on things re Brexit.

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 08:44

I hope it's occurred to you now @BasiliskStare

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 08:48

@bellinsurge - I am certainly aware of the idea & yes I was not before this thread. You are absolutely right there. Thank you

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 11/02/2019 08:49

I've stocked up because if people start panic buying I want to be able to avoid the shops.

I've got loads of catfood for my elderly mog as she's got a sensitive stomach and her food comes from Germany

MiceSqueakCatsMeow · 11/02/2019 08:54

How much in the stockpile is enough?

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 09:00

How much works for you in terms of space, money and what you like to eat.
For months, I have suggested on here a three day buffer bought slowly and within budget.
I'm not bothering to trot out my schpiel on this anymore because it is harder to do in a slow proportionate way now with the date fast approaching. I have had to fight off enough numpties calling me a scare mongerer.
There are loads of threads on this on here either in the Brexit or Prepper topic.

HeronLanyon · 11/02/2019 09:04

Basilisk - you may stockpile peach if that leaves white for me. I know standards may be under threat but surely we haven’t stopped to peach yet ???

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 09:32

@HeronLanyon , If I am going to face Armageddon I shall not do it with peach loo roll. Although if I am , any loo roll may be welcome. I may leave you with the pale lemon colour , would that do ?

To be clear to all - I am joking about this . I hope I am not rude or impolite to anyone , it is just that I honestly had not realised this was something which people are planning for until very very recently ( i.e. an hour or two )

So to @bellinsurge and others I hope you will not think me impolite. Just off to get some milk & asked DS what he thought we should stock up on. He likes sweetcorn - so I actually might buy 4 tins instead of 2. I am guessing that is not panic buying. ( We will eat them anyway )

bellinisurge · 11/02/2019 09:35

That's the idea @BasiliskStare . What you eat. Don't waste money on stuff you don't like.

Uptheapplesandpears · 11/02/2019 10:58

I would say a great deal depends on money and space basilisk. What can you afford?

If you have perhaps a few pounds extra each week to allocate to a stockpile, I'd start as you are with a couple of extra tins of things you eat. The sweetcorn is veg, is there any tinned or shelf stable protein you like? Tuna maybe. Then I would also think about any of rice, pasta, couscous and pulses, any of these you eat. Could you get an extra bag of one of them every week? A couple of tins each week and a bag of rice or pasta means you'll have enough for a few days by late March.

There's also the question of freezer stuff. How much freezer space do you have? Many of us are getting some meat and veg in to freeze. Would be worth you having a look at the freezer now and thinking about what you might be able to fit.

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 11:35

@uptheapplesandpears Yes you are right money and space - so within reason I can afford to buy some extra things each week. Yes Tuna - have got a couple of tins ( which I would have done anyway but replenished quicker )

When I hear people saying stock up the freezer - this is where I switch off. I have a double height but single width Fridge freezer ( and glad of it ) but the concept of stocking up the freezer just won't work. So EG when my mother was ill my father bought an extra freezer to put in the garage to accommodate his batch cooking . I can't do that - have 2 drawers of a freezer. Also house v small - cannot stockpile tins / loo rolls / Just is not the space.

So bizarrely - I probably could afford to stock up a bit if I thought it necessary , but I simply do not have the space. & this is where I find it hard to relate to get extra packs of loo rolls etc , because short of wrapping them in bin bags and hanging them out of the window I just do not have the room.

Do you all live in lovely big houses. Grin
If so -can I come and visit when this whole Brexit thing is over Grin - I am joking there

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 11:45

Oh but just one thing in fairness to @Bellinsurge - if what she is advocating is have about 3 weeks shopping in - then yes I can get that as a plan & feasible - It is just wryly amusing to me that people seem to assume there is masses of space to store stuff. In my house - no there isn't

Anyway I have said my bit - best wishes to @Bellinsurge and indeed @Uptheapplesandpears - Thanks for tips even if I may not be able to make use of all of them ! Flowers Actually Brexit aside - it is useful to think how to make best use of the storage space available.

LadyKalila · 11/02/2019 11:46

Its crazy to stockpile, do you think the world is coming to an end?

BasiliskStare · 11/02/2019 11:49

I hope not @LadyKilila - I have bought my father a relatively ( for me ) expensive 80th birthday present and would hate to see it go to waste Grin - such is my faith that the word will continue Wink

HeronLanyon · 11/02/2019 11:51

I currently live where I have almost no space at all but then noticed space above kitchen cabinets and bought cheap plain storage cubes white and they don’t look bad. They are now full of tins and jars and household back up stuff. INCLUDING basilisk please note - 20 WHITE loo rolls. I also discovered by moving my washing machine a little a redundant small cupboard has become usable. Any similar spaces? Don’t think we need bin bags hanging out window just yet and not very secure from marauding stockpile pilferers
