Hamilton is it worth it?

For some reason I've suddenly decided I really want to see Hamilton. Decent tickets are about £125 and we're up north so train, hotel and food on top. Although we can afford it I'm not sure I can justify the cost to myself. Anyone seen it? Is it worth it?!

@Branleuse yes, certainly all the grand circle seats looked very tight. I thought maybe stalls slightly better?

Seat reviews said ours were a struggle for 5’3, & I’m 6’!

As the theatre was renovated before this show I did think they could have taken out a couple of rows here & there...

Longislandicetee · 04/11/2018 21:12

It's brilliant! Rather embarrassingly i hadn't heard of it when dh got us tickets as a birthday present. Didn't bother listening to the soundtrack before (as i didn't even know it was out) but loved every minute of it, and have listened to the soundtrack all the way through a few times since, as you realise that you miss some of the nuances in the word play because the staging is so good.

hollieberrie · 04/11/2018 21:14

I went in April, loved it. I play the soundtrack in the car daily Grin
Fave character is Burr by far - agree that Giles Terera is wonderful. I also like George Washington, Right Hand Man is my fave track. I read somewhere that GW only raps when he is angry, he sings otherwise, and i couldn't stop watching out for that during the show.

Go OP, you wont regret it!

Is there a Hamilton thread on MN? hopeful face

eatingtomuch · 04/11/2018 21:15

Definitely worth watching. I took my Dd this week for her 16th birthday and we both really enjoyed it.

I'd recommend listening to the whole soundtrack in order before going.

BeardedMum · 04/11/2018 21:17

I thought it was very clever and very different from anything else I have seen, but I would not pay for the most expensive tickets and its not the best show I have seen this year. I don’t understand the hysteria surrounding it to be honest.

lrh3891 · 04/11/2018 21:17

Do it. Just do it. I am a musical theatre obsessive and I was absolutely bowled over by it, best thing I've ever seen.

I had listened to the soundtrack a lot before I saw it, which I do think helps. But worth absolutely every single penny.

AlexanderHamilton · 04/11/2018 21:19

I did pay top price because dh has vertigo and so can’t sit high up. It was our Christmas present to each other as a family.

SpiritedLondon · 04/11/2018 21:23

I bought myself tickets for my birthday when they were first released ( and waited 18 months to go). I think I paid £85 for front of the stalls. I listened to the soundtrack a lot which I think was helpful - mainly because some of the rapping is fast and I wanted to understand it all. I became a bit obsessed with Linn Manuel Miranda (because the word play is so clever ) and watched every interview with him on YouTube. My husband didn’t know anything about it and loved it too. It’s nothing like Eminem although I know Eminem went to see it in NYC like a lot of the big rap names. I would definitely go and see it again.

Blessthekids · 04/11/2018 21:24

If the price is fine for you then yes it is worth it. We went as a family of 4 and absolutely loved it. We would love to see it again.

Godowneasy · 04/11/2018 21:31

I went to see it as my 19 year old daughter is obsessed with it. We both really enjoyed it!
The icing on the cake for my daughter was after the show. Fans hang around outside and the cast come and work their way along the queue to talk to everyone and take photos. They were fab as it took them a while! One of the cast told my daughter that she looked stunning in the dress she was wearing, which made her year day!

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 04/11/2018 21:33

it's great. we got tickets in the pre-sale, so about £60 for rear stalls. we also travelled down from the North, but did a Saturday matinee to avoid a hotel stay. We did know the soundtrack inside out before we went, but although you might miss a few lines (especially Lafayette's) I think it would still be amazing without prior knowledge. Loved George Washington in particular, and thought his vocals richer and more powerful than Chris Jackson on the soundtrack.

Godowneasy · 04/11/2018 21:34

I also meant to say, make sure you're buying from approved ticket sellers, and not viagogo etc which are second hand ticket sellers and charge fortunes for quite basic priced tickets.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 04/11/2018 21:40

I can’t imagine how amazing it is for someone who doesn’t know what’s going to happen! But then again I really liked enjoying the references to the tea party, George going mad, mount vernon, Monticello, jefferson’s affair with his slave (‘we know who’s really doing the planting’) that I wouldn’t have caught if hadn’t listened repeatedly to the lyrics.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 04/11/2018 21:42

I’d also say it sounds samey sometimes because Miranda used repetitive motifs as inspired by Les Mis

crispinquent · 04/11/2018 21:45

Yes

IvySquirrel · 04/11/2018 21:48

Both DH and I have worked professionally in the theatre for over 30 years (backstage roles). I knew the show beforehand, he didn't. We both thought it was among the top 3 things we have ever seen in every respect. On the way home DS1 (18) was begging to go and see it again. We paid £100 each for 4 tickets in the stalls and would happily pay the same again. Go!!

LittleBearPad · 04/11/2018 21:48

It’s wonderful. I want to go again.

icebearforpresident · 04/11/2018 22:19

It’s bloody amazing! I saw in back in September when half the main roles, including A.Ham were being filled by understudies and it was still bloody amazing.

So good I bought a mug and BOTH programmes.

It’s nothing like listening to Eminem etc, I’m not really a hip hop fan and it’s still my most listened to album of the year.

redastherose · 04/11/2018 22:21

Definitely yes, my daughter and her friend were madly into it and her friends mum and I took them to see it. It was fabulous we all enjoyed it even though friends mum and I had intended just to drink our way through it

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 04/11/2018 22:55

I'm going for the second time next week! Can't wait.

Knowing the soundtrack helps but a soundtrack on its own is never going to recreate the whole experience. Mind you, I was listening to it out of order (thanks Spotify shuffle) so that didn't help.

I think it's genuinely innovative, smart, great cast. Def in my top ten shows of all time.

sm40 · 04/11/2018 22:58

Seems I'm in a minority!
Wished I had now listened to the soundtrack first, I just found it hard work and didn't quite follow the story.
My dh would see it again tomorrow!!
We had seats in the top circle. Tight squeeze in the legs but could see everything.
I'll stick to Matilda
And school of Rock!

ShatnersWig · 04/11/2018 23:05

Paid £37.50 up in the upper circle and visibility was fine. i'm 5 ft 10 and my friend 5 ft 4. Chap in front didn't obscure her view as angle is good. Legroom a bit tight and at 6 ft I'd struggle but it was OK.

Enjoyed it, bought soundtrack after to grab more of the lyrics as we missed at least half (which I think is poor, and i say that as a performer myself; I know its rap and often at pace but that's the whole point - the word play is superb, you want to hear it and understand). There are several numbers we both adored and I often listen to but not as a whole; we both enjoyed it but neither of us fussed to see it again whereas we've seen many musicals twice in London and then sometimes again on tour (Avenue Q, Book of Mormon, Priscilla, Hairspray and will be going to see Follies at the National for its return next year and that will be the third visit).

lubeybooby · 05/11/2018 16:11

Absolutely yes. I just saw it last week and I'm still taking in the magnitude of what I witnessed.. and bought the soundtrack
