Hamilton is it worth it?

For some reason I've suddenly decided I really want to see Hamilton. Decent tickets are about £125 and we're up north so train, hotel and food on top. Although we can afford it I'm not sure I can justify the cost to myself. Anyone seen it? Is it worth it?!

IM GOING TOMMOROW

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 05/11/2018 16:21

18yo DD went with a friend and they both loved it, said it was amazing.

She's got the soundtrack now too and is always listening to it but didn't have it beforehand

KatyMac · 05/11/2018 16:42

The dancing and choreography is superb - it's nigh on impossible to get an audition

AlexanderHamilton & Teacherlikemisstrunchball are right it is 'theatre' in capitals!

Went to see FAME last week and tho' it saddens me to say it I came out miserable - never happened in a musical before - DD & I would kill to go again

Oh & you can only buy tickets from the one site there is no resale or ticket touts at all

Tickets just gone on sale up to March 2019

This booking period has been on sale for ages!

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 05/11/2018 17:01

I’ve been 4 times this year and have booked to go again Grin It’s incredible!

Planesmistakenforstars · 05/11/2018 18:25

100% not worth it. Emperor's new clothes and all that.

Angelf1sh · 05/11/2018 18:28

I went on Saturday, I had £37 tickets which had slightly reduced visibility when people were “upstairs” but nobody was up there for long so it was fine. I don’t really like musicals but I enjoyed it, I’d definitely say it was worth a watch.

Autumndays14 · 05/11/2018 18:46

If anyone has seen something this year that was better than Hamilton I would like to know what it was. I saw Matilda which was great but Hamilton is in another league entirely!!

AlexanderHamilton · 05/11/2018 20:59

Jamie came close.

loubielou31 · 05/11/2018 23:25

Off thread a little but Megabus is much better than I remember and fraction of the cost of train tickets!!! If it helps to make the excursion more affordable.

Ozgirl75 · 06/11/2018 01:27

My 8 year old Ds is obsessed with it after doing one of the songs in his musical theatre class. I also love it and we have had so many amazing conversations off the back of it.

He would love to see it - how young is too young and why? I’m ok with the swearing as he knows not to use those words anyway. Is that the reason for the 10+ suggestion?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/11/2018 03:05

I’ll find out in a week. I’m really curious about whether I’ll become as much of a fan as so many seem to be. Looking forward to it anyway.

Branleuse · 06/11/2018 07:33

I took my ten year old @Ozgirl75 there is a little swearing and sex references but nothing outrageous.
Basically everything thats in the play is in tthe soundtrack. It doesnt really have much extra lines, as the whole thing is told by song, so its less like a musical and more like a concept album

Ozgirl75 · 06/11/2018 08:06

Thank you. I think I will go if we can get tickets. I think it’s fantastic.

Ozgirl75 · 06/11/2018 08:15

If you had to get tickets in royal circle or stalls, which would you choose....?

ZackPizzazz · 06/11/2018 08:25

It's amazing, go go go. I saw it "blind" and was captivated, then saw it again after I'd listened to the soundtrack so I could appreciate the interplay of the words and choreography. There is barely a dry eye in the house at the end and I think it gets a standing ovation practically every night.

Plus... The Room Where It Happens. Click, boom!

ZackPizzazz · 06/11/2018 08:26

Also, I literally can't believe someone can call songs that include the Cabinet Rap Battles, Room Where It Happens, and Burn "samey". There are multiple genres represented.

AlexanderHamilton · 06/11/2018 10:04

We sat in the stalls in the Premium seats. I would have preferred Royal Circle as you miss sonme of the lighting effects in the stalls but we were very restricted on dates we could go due to dd's GCSE's last year so had to take what we could.

Ozgirl75 · 06/11/2018 10:05

I can hardly listen to Dear Theodosia without welling up.

AlexanderHamilton · 06/11/2018 10:06

Re: Age apprioriatness. - The phrase Mother F is probably what gives it the age rating. One time it is bleeped out as part of the shock of other characters on stage but the other isn't.

Ozgirl75 · 06/11/2018 10:15

Yes I wondered if it was that. How about the song “say no to this”? It’s the only one I haven’t downloaded - is it very raunchy? Ds knows he had an affair and that means he kissed and cuddled someone who wasn’t his wife.

AlexanderHamilton · 06/11/2018 10:24

I wouldn't say it was overly raunchy.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 06/11/2018 10:28

Oz, the main reservation I have about taking my just turned 8yo (my 11yo went for her birthday and was thrilled at the sweary bits) is how long the show is. It doesn't drag in the slightest, but it does require a lot of concentration, and it's very much an adult audience so less tolerant of any minor wriggliness or whispers to explain the plot/wordplay than a more family orientated show might be.

AlexanderHamilton · 06/11/2018 10:30

Yes, it is a LONG show.

ZackPizzazz · 06/11/2018 10:38

Say No To This isn't super raunchy. There are lyrics like "took me to her bed, let her legs spread" and the staging is quite sensual (Maria on Hamilton's lap). Your call really.
